It's been 6+ months since FFG's online store has had dice packs in stock, and my FLGS tells me there are "no more WFRP3 releases on the horizon."

Am I the only one who sees this as the death knell for WRFP3? Or, am I just overreacting?

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

I too have a bad feeling about this ...

On the other hand, they release one book after another for the 40k universe; so they still have the license I guess.

Maybe it's a matter of priorities? Wasn't Jason Little - the designer of WFRPv3 - also the lead developer of the new Star Wars RPG?

Wow that hurts a lot. A great setting and game like WHF will be dropped before this shitty game?

I think some PoD will be published and some dice made!

They still have the Warhammer Fantasy license (and, as far as I know, have renewed it). Somebody working for the German publisher of WFRP3 (Heidelberger Spieleverlag) talked about that. However, might be that they could not drop the licence because GW sold the Warhammer license in a "bundle", and FFG's 40k products are selling.

Then again, it's not surprising that publication for WFRP3 has slowed down. Basic stuff is covered. The new Enemy Within was released just two or three months ago, and after that they announced a new POD.

My guess is that right now, FFG doesn't have a clear idea what to do with the game line right now. There are probably only few persons who take care of that line (Daniel Clark (I) is in charge now, I think), and they likely have other product lines to look after, too.

Still, the dice bother me, too. That's a real shame.

Regarding Jay Little: Yes, that was due to health issues. Cardiac death (no kidding), defibrillator, lots of good luck and slowly coming back to life. I think he was in hospital during summer 2011 and it took some time before he got back to work (part-time at first?) - not sure there. As far as I know, he was the only designer on WFRP3 who ever posted to the FFG forums. He sure was a driving force.

By dead do you mean a community that is not active? Because it seems pretty lively. By dead do you mean nothing being produced?
Because the enemy within can out not too long ago and a pod was released last month, so it's not dead there.
Do you mean... No dice being made means a dead game? You could get the gm vault or one of the several dice apps.

Just to add some context and confirm some of the information floating around there.

Yes, I was away for quite some time due to health issues. I had an LAD occlusion, which led to a fatal heart attack, stroke, and some miraculous medical work which left me in a coma.

Even after coming out of the coma, I was in the hospital for more than a month, and spent almost half a year convalescing at home before even part-time work was feasible.

So what's the point of all this? Just a few weeks before my heart attack, I had been promoted to Managing Designer and oversaw part of the department as well as all the projects I was still developing. My sudden departure left a void in personnel management, product line management, and development. Since I was so strongly involved with WFRP, sadly it was one of the products most significantly impacted by my illness.

The did just recently releases a PoD product.

From what I understand Dice are never coming back, you get them in the GM Vault now.

If that is the case, then that is a terrible shame. Talk about a stupid waste for anyone who already owns the game, there's 0 reason to even want a GM's Vault :-(. What exactly are you basing that theory on?

Wow, sorry to hear of your health issues. They definitely sounded serious. Super glad you are okay - it's probably a really, really good thing that it happened where you work in Minnesota as they have stunningly high-quality medical teams there.

Super glad that you're okay and huge wishes for a full recovery and no more scares like this.

It is great that Mr Little is back on track and lives, everyone who follows his Blog knows of this and was happy, i hope.
but back to Topic:

@ynnen: Are you allowed to say anything about the future of the WHF line at FFG? Do you know anything?
in other threads you ignored such questions, hope to get something now!

WFRP is slated to get periodic print on demand supplements akin to "From the Grave" and the hyper-specialized career stuff until their license runs out in 2020.

No game store is going to carry this product anymore because of FFG's lack of forward product announcement, the PODs, the out of print dice, etc.

As the product is pretty much finished for essential releases, I wouldn't hold my breath about seeing another Enemy Within anytime soon.

Put simply, there's no product leadership since Jay Little had to drop out for health issues. Without a fan in charge, nothing is going to happen.

The good news with this is you won't have to worry about catching up with releases

And the system has morphed into Star Wars, and FFG will put all their efforts into Star Wars long before Warhammer. Luckily, we have some good products already. Pity, as the system was good, but the first sanfu on its initial release really killed it.

I would agree with that. Their initial release schedule wasn't all that different from D&D or other systems (multiple essential releases), but I felt where they screwed up was not having a PLAYER entry point. Had they had a player's guide with the board-game-less version at the outset, they could have captured a larger market.

I'm still amazed at the number of people interested in basic star wars game who have zero idea that it was bourne out of the WFRP3 "advanced" system.

Yeah, the base entry fee was steep. I bought in just because I love the Warhammer world, but my friends were very turned off. Granted, most players pay that much when they first buy, but they can choose to buy the DMG, PHB, and MM separately.

Plus, lots of folks I know still call this a fancy board game. It is not a board game! Grrr! I even have one friend who played it, and said it was a board game. What? Odd fellow. All it does is take your character sheet and break it down into elements.

Good system, good game. I hate to see it die, but I will keep playing when I can. I just wish I had folks to play with here.

I joke about it being a boardgame nowadays with my group. We started not really using much for component and then as we became more proficient, it's just kind of a fall-back.

In reality, this is less of a boardgame than D&D (for example) because there's no 5' steps, no grid, no board, abstract movement, generalized actions with player creativity input, etc. Whether a person tracks their action recharge with pen or counter is irrelevant.

The only boardgame aspects I really feel are in the game are Talent Socketing and monster cards. I don't use talent socketing at all and I much prefer to have a monster on a single sheet of paper in a manual over having to juggle handfuls of cards (some people like them though). My monster cards remain largely unused except for showing players a picture and I've scanned all of their special actions so I can just have them on a single sheet printout attached to my creature guide rather than scattered to the four Winds of CHAOS

It is a bit unfortunate the treatment the game has gotten from some of the more "grognardy" role playing gamers.

As a board gamer who'd never tried an RPG before, the game looked VERY attractive. It came neatly packaged all in one box (like a board game) and with lots of fun bits (also like a board game). It worked very, very well for introducing me and my group to RPGs (none of us had played them before), and we found out how very different they are from board games. Definitely a fun RPG.

My preference for "all-in-one" RPGs is still there though. Things like Dragon Age or Pathfinder's Core Rulebook are much more attractive to me than D&Ds stupid 3 books to play the game method. But of course, the concept of multiple people buying the same product to play the game together is still foreign to me....

I think what really kicked the game in the head was when they added the GMs\Player's Guide\Vault crap. It made it confusing for players trying to enter the game ("Wait, what product do I need to play?") and saying that you could play the game "without components" but then requiring you to go buy a bunch of custom dice seemed strange. Plus the guides were out of date the instant anything was released after them so......

Joseph has so TOTALLY hit the nail on the head with his insightful and totally spot-on post. This is exactly how I felt about the game and how others I spoke with did, as well.

Loved the board game-y elements but hated the confusion spawned by creating similar and poorly-named expansions and products.

I think the second line with the vaults was the correct move, but after the first move the damage was done.
