A holiday period RPG news round-up:

State of the Hat: 2012 and Beyond

Fred Hicks has shared his outline of the future for Evil Hat in the blog post State of the Hat: 2012 and Beyond. There are some real gems to be found, including news of Don't Hack This Game, a supplement for Don't Rest Your Head which collects many ideas for customising the game (Ryan Macklin has also blogged about this, soliciting content). There is also information about some exciting Dresden Files RPG projects, such as the Paranet Papers, described as 'part system update and setting catch-up, part campaign starter kit'.

Gnome Stew teaser

The Gnome Stew team have hinted at some imminent news in a Google+ post:

Quote:
Sometime in January 2012, hopefully just after the new year, we're launching a new project.

It's not a book.
It will have a website.
Gnome Stew will be its anchor.
It will be a challenge to GMs all over the world.

Expect further details when we get them!

Beginner Box Pathfinder Society Character Creation Guide

Following on from previous announcements, Paizo have expanded the play options available to Pathfinder Beginner Box owners even further. In the blog post Using the Beginner Box to Create a Pathfinder Society Character, Paizo have announced the release of a new guide for creating characters, using just the Beginner Box, that are legal for use in the Pathfinder Society organised play campaign. The character creation guide PDF is a free download.

These are the latest Pathfinder RPG headlines!

Mid-2012 product announcements
Over the last few days, Paizo have announced several products due for release in May and June 2012.

Following hot on the heels of the Bestiary Box announced last week, June 2012 will see the release of the Rise of the Runelords Pawn Collection. This collection of over a hundred pawns, in a similar style to those already seen in the Beginner Box, will support the release of the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition hardcover. Unlike the previous releases, this product will not contain plastic bases, and is supplementary to the Bestiary Box.

Other products announced include:
Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path Face Cards (June 2012)
GameMastery Map Pack: Marketplace (June 2012)
Pathfinder Player Companion: Blood of Angels (June 2012)
GameMastery Buff Deck (May 2012)
Pathfinder Module: The Moonscar (May 2012)
Visions of WAR: The Art of Wayne Reynolds Hardcover (May 2012)

Hero Lab for the Pathfinder Beginner Box
Lone Wolf Development have released Hero Lab for the Pathfinder Beginner Box, a starter edition of their popular Hero Lab character creation software. This version is specifically designed to support the Pathfinder Beginner Box, and is absolutely free to download and use. The software is currently for Windows only, but a Mac version is in the works and due for release in early 2012.
Thanks to Sky Knight X for the scoop.

Paizo Holiday Thank You
Paizo have wished their supporters Season's Greetings by issuing a promotional code for use in their online store. The code gives a 10% discount to anything other than subscriptions, preorders, backorders, and non-Paizo downloads, can be used on a single order per customer, and is valid until the end of January 2012. Perfectly timed for anyone wanting to pick up the new Bestiary 3.

Two Pathfinder news items today, both related to the Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box:

Bestiary Box
ICv2 have broken the news about Paizo's forthcoming Bestiary Box. This supplement will include over 300 monster stand-ups in the same style as the pawns in the Beginner Box, and will be released in May 2012 at a suggested price of $34.99. The news was confirmed on the Paizo messageboards by Erik Mona, who also stated that the larger-sized pawns would have improved bases, covering the correct number of squares on a battle-map.
Update: While this news post was being written, the product page has appeared on paizo.com!

Beginner Box Bash Mini-Adventures
Back in October, Paizo promoted the Beginner Box Bash events at game stores. These took the form of four short adventures that demonstrated the game to new players. Now that the Bash events are over, Paizo have released the demos as a free download. Beginner Box GMs will be pleased to know that the four mini-adventures form a sequel to the adventure contained in the box itself.

Dungeonaday.com Closing

Super Genius Games have announced that Dungeonaday.com, their subscription-based adventure & dungeon design service, will be closing in April 2012. The venture was started by Monte Cook in 2009, but the site is currently running at a loss. Dungeonaday.com is not taking any new subscribers, but will honour existing subscriptions, or compensate subscribers through access to other Super Genius Games products.

First Gnome Stew guest article

The ENnie Award-winning blog Gnome Stew has published its first ever guest article, written by the winner of the March of Dimes charity auction. JavaDragon's article, Don’t Waste My Time: Tips for Keeping Your Games Moving, is an interesting read on ensuring your gaming sessions don't stall, and is up to Gnome Stew's usual high standard.

I've got the pleasure of being able to kick off the Pathfinder section of RPG Geek News with three big news items from Paizo Publishing:

Firstly, many people will already have heard of the Pathfinder Battles pre-painted miniatures range, produced under licence by WizKids Games. However, it's only in the last few days that the final line-up of minis in the first major set, Heroes & Monsters, was confirmed by Erik Mona on the Paizo Blog. The final three miniatures in the 40-strong set were revealed to be a wolf, a mummy, and a chimera. A fan site at www.pathfinderminis.com is maintaining a list of all of the figures, together with photos of almost all of them.

Next is the imminent release of the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 3. Paizo have been heavily previewing this book with a series of blog posts featuring sample creatures:

- Two New Kami: Shikigami and Zuishin
- Enter the Dragon!: Young Forest Dragon
- Misfit Love: Kamadan
- Unflinching Evil: Tzitzimitl

There's even wallpaper available! As can be seen from the list above, many of the monsters have an Eastern feel (tying in with the Jade Regent Adventure Path), but reassurances have been made that there is plenty more besides in this 320-page hardback. The Bestiary 3 is due to arrive in stores (and as PDF) later this month.

Finally, Paizo have just announced and opened RPG Superstar 2012, the fifth year of their open-call RPG design contest. Previous winners and finalists include Neil Spicer, Rob McCreary, and Jason Nelson; names that may well be familiar to fans of Pathfinder products. After five rounds of competition, in which the judges will ruthlessly whittle down the entrants, the winner will have the chance to write a Pathfinder Module to be published in 2013. The three other finalists will be rewarded with assignments to write Pathfinder Society Scenario Season 4. The closing date for entries in the first round is 6th January 2012, while the winner is due to be announced in April 2012.
