Paddling in the pool of GMing

A long standing player in our group is looking to take his first steps into GMing and is wondering where to paddle. As one of the two GMs (with combined GMing of 60+ years) for our group I have offered to help him find a system and a genre/background.

In this area it becomes relevant to see how different systems of experience/training etc can allow a character to develop.

For instance, with HERO System experience is gained trip by trip and spent increasing anything in the same way as initial points are spent - so it is possible to use this mechanic pre-game to gradually build characters. Perhaps a GM wants to see a 0+25pt 'young/early' version with a background to there, then gives a further 25pts and wants to see the next version with the next 'bit' of the characters backstory, etc, etc.

Within Bushido for instance the training element can also be used. Within our group we have tried this 'treatment', as I call it, to allow characters to spend some of the initial (rolled) monies for training, during this time they might have encounters. This is a little slower and generally is a one-to-one with the GM - but can provide more variation on the base starting characters and help fit the character naturally into the GM's world (Nippon in this case).

When you look at the DnD side of things it's more a question of what starting level should characters be, and this doesn't really work to the same degree as the above.

So, how to find these mechanics on rpggeek; browsing, geeklists, experience of other systems, but best would be recommendations for anyone that might read this and maybe if I am lucky with a 'why' for their recommendation - other than "it's good", or "I like it".

In order to help him we talked a little and one idea he wishes to start with is that of character generation.
We are real ROLE-players and character generation, backgrounds, etc have always been big for us, along with a consistent and believable (within it's universe/sphere) environment/world/plane.

So, to this end I am starting with Lifepath Character Gen.

We are a group of gamers that have been playing together for 25+ years and generally myself or one other has been the GM.

Well, one of the players has decided it is about time (we all agree) that another try GMing. Unfortunately he has built 'GMs' up and feels he cannot measure up, given that we two GMs wiil be players.

I have assured him it's not like that and we all started, often very messily, somewhere and he can too.

So, I thought it might be of use to others out there in a similar situation, first-time GMs for new and old groups alike, to those looking at something new, and anyone else interested.

We have played a fair handful of games/systems for the purpose of this post I shall reduse the list to more recent plays:

Bushido
HERO 4th, 5th (also Fantasy Hero, Champions, Justice Inc and Danger International)
DragonQuest
Cyberspace
Palladium, Heroes Unlimited, RIFTS
Judge Dredd
and all manner of Dungeons and Dragons, Basic, Advanced, 3.5, etc..
and plenty of others, you get the idea - we have been playing a long time and tried a lot of things.

So, what next, he (the new GM-to-be) wishes to make his mark on the group whilst being within his depth.
