The coolest thing about hanging out with other roleplayers is getting to share interesting or funny roleplay anecdotes, to gush about that cool thing you did in your campaign last week where you rolled five tens in a row and ended the galactic war with your bard's song, how you GM'ed a session and your players ruined all your plans within five minutes, the plot twist that just shattered your PBM, or that thing that happened that made everyone roll on the floor laughing for 10 minutes straight.

I love to read those funny and inspiring stories, so I thought to make weekly a Geeklist for them. A Geeklist so visitors to the rpg item you're playing can get excited about it through some short anecdotes. Feel free to add a link to your session report, as well!

So, how did your RPG session(s) go this week?

(Subscription thread? Ah, why the hell not!)

Continuing from here....

The last few sessions of this were, as I mentioned, hard for me to get into. The GM and I had discussed it and I feel like he understood where I was coming from and what I wanted out of the game. For my part, I made a deliberate decision to really commit to the play and push my character's part in the story hard to throw out as many hooks as possible for people to react to.

I am happy to report that it worked well and I had a lot of fun! Previously I think I had been playing up the aloof aspect of my character. As a skald (bard) he is expected to be a little above the fray -- carry news and so on. But I took too much of a tack towards passivity, which is not the goal. So I got more involved.

Storywise, we have fallen in with a berserker who has helped us out a lot, but is also kind of crazy. We were confronted by a clan who claimed that the berserker killed their grandfather 30 years ago (odd, considering the berserker looks to be early 20s) and demanding we turn him over. We refused and a melee ensued, in which several of the enemy clan died.

In order to not be guilty of murder, we sent some party members north and south to announce the killing. The Norse definition of murder at the time was "secret killing" -- if you kill someone you are supposed to go out and announce it to nearby villages. You might still be in the wrong, and have to pay the blood price, but you are not considered a murderer because you didn't try to conceal it.

So I went south, where the clan lived. I announced the killing to an elder, and he demanded that we bring the berserker to the Allthing to face justice. I argued that we have no control over what that crazy mofo did and couldn't make promises on his behalf; the elder said that it wasn't relevant and if we didn't get the berserker there, then he couldn't guarantee our safety from the bloodthirsty and irrational young warriors in his clan.

Oh, and this clan is apparently shape shifters. We haven't seen evidence of this.

I insulted the elder and walked off. A few months later, we sailed to the Allthing. Along the way, I ritually insulted a guy to death. That was pretty funny. (As a skald, I have a family skill of flighting -- like the Norse version of the dozens -- and I rolled a crit; he rolled a crit fumble and had a heart attack. Whee!)

We played two sessions of our sci-fi homebrew campaign, in which we investigated the disappearance of a transport car near the planet’s dead zone. Time dilation, worm holes and other shenanigans made for a very cerebral two-parter and we still have no clue what actually happened!

My favorite part was entering the ghost village that had been the target of a planetwide attack some 60 years ago in the universe war. Complete stillness, blast shadows of people crouching and praying, Adagio for strings playing in the background... Of course then we found out the blast shadows were moving..

Session Report: Post-First Session impressions

Session went well except for a couple tech issues.

CR had issues with his mic picking up RFI from the airport.

JB's vehicle wasn't available, so we had to pick him up. No biggie.

Travel rules suffer for net-based players. A shared map solution is essential.

very first shakedown of the rules for us.

I want the genuine TOR dice. That'll have to wait, tho'.

So yesterday evening, a Scorpion Bushi, a Mantis Bushi and a Dragon Shugenja entered with me as their GM the world of Rokugan for a demo session.

It was a fun session, bit hard to learn everything, but I noticed how easy the system actually was. But I do think I would need to get more up to date with the whole: honor/glory/status thing. And so would the players when one actually interupted the Daimjo to tell him his a big baby or something.

And man I need more d10's when I want to play this game again. 4 is certainly not enough.

And how deadly this game is, even in full defense you get knocked out by a flame spell by your own allies, Kwakkie discovered that one.

Session report will followis here.

Session Four already of the Nouveau Montaigne campaign. I had been wracking my brain about how to proceed, when I decided to steal a bit from my L5R campaign (one of the more celebrated parts) and gave them a superior NPC (a muskie, my 7th Sea equivalent of a mountie) they loved to hate; who gave them the choice between cooperating (in finding out why the Cathay pseudo-indians were attacking the pioneers) or jail (for being foreigners at the time when the pioneers were under attack).

The brave, brave PCs then found out the Indians just wanted access again to their holy places & burial grounds, especially to the Urn of their greatest Ancestor, Wild Bizon. Now if only the players hadn't lost that Urn into the Porté walkways ... after a while they had fashioned a reasonable facsimile and made peace with the Indians.

They were then ordered to find out more about the Eveque (organisation dedicated to getting independence for their part of New Montaigne) and find the spies from the Montaigne directoire. They did this with admirable dedication, going so far as chasing the first Montaigne spy they could find out of his window (climbing to his rooftop) and then throwing a knife into his hands ... one dead Montaigne spy, and one party running from the authorities...

You'll get over it.
mbmbmbmbmb
So I decided to go all the way back and run a game using only the rules from the Original Dungeons and Dragons box set. Of course I also needed to reference Chainmail.

It turned out differently than I expected. My main group has become much more into playing out the role of their characters, than simply killing the next creature. Yet due to the deadliness of the OD&D system and the dungeon delve nature of the one-shot I ran, the session had a much more tactical feel than a story feel. Not that NPCs and events didn't play out the story. They did. But the forge out, fight a few creatures, then return to camp; rinse repeat process, quickly began to feel less story driven and tad more gamey feeling.

All-in-all it was a well received session and we had fun. But next session I'll run something from Basic Dungeons and Dragons so we can compare how they might feel both similarly and differently.
