Our monthly game day was this weekend. I had a great time. I think I forgot a game or two in my recording, but I just can't remember for the life of me. We had several new people this month, and just barely ran out of chairs at one point (about 35 people I think).

Last week I got together with Juleske & Conlaen for another trip to Middle Earth & The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. We build new decks, a Tactics/Lore Dwarf deck featuring Gimli, Bifur and Thalin, a full Leadership deck with Gloin, Dain and Theodred and a Lore/Spirit deck with Bilbo, Frodo and Denethor. The quest we tackled was the Dead Marshes. We actually played it twice, as the first run through was ridiculously easy. The second time was already harder, but even then the willpower aid of Dain (to all dwarves) and Faramir (to all characters of a given player) was immense.

We still had some time left after those 2 walkthroughs, so we decided to replay Emyn Muil, which we had defeated a couple of weeks ago, alas with some cheating. After our first quest we were already down a hero, so we restarted. The next run through we got through it fairly easily. So we went 3-1, not bad for a single evening's work. We think these will be our campaign decks for when we do all the quests in succession.

Yesterday, Pluizebol and I played the second scenario of Tribes of the Vale. An early loss of Timett son of Timett, coupled to a lack of Rally symbols and Rally cards, made this a stark victory (we couldn't finish the last turn as grandparents arrived for the birthday party of our daughter, but the writing was on the wall, in big fluorescent letters).

With my gamegroup:
Started off with a 5 player game of Hab & Gut, a trememdous game that is, of market trading. The beginning was very cruel to me, all goods which looked promising went down by other players and I was in last place with 2nd least charity contribution at mid game, far behind the top 2 players. Things didn't go very well later, as no goods went up much from my side. I almost passed the 2nd player in charity contribution but didn't, so finished in last.

We then played a 3 player game of Eminent Domain wtih a new player. I chose Warfare early as my first 2 planers were Metalic, but failed to gain valuable symbols while my competition went all colonize and produce trade with some double producing Fertile planets. The game was close but I finished last, not being able to secure Prestige planets of Warfare symbols until late in the game.

Then a 6 player game of Resistance where I was a spy and sitting next to the other spy. Unfortunately for us, a costly mistake was made by my parther who failed to place the blame on me and as the 4 resistance members were sitting next to each other, managed to figure it out by the end.

Sunday:
After a long period, I finally managed to play Thunderstone with all expansions, finally incorporating all cards from Promo #3 (had the Hydra in there) and the Rite of Banishing setting from Heart of Doom. It was a 2 player game with my fiancé, she took an early lead killing 3-4 monsters early with Militia and Short Spears, but I managed to level up a Dark Animator to Puppeteer, and my early Jondul strategy finally paid off mid game, with the Undead Spectral Monster group. By the end, I had sacrificed most Jondul, replacede them by a couple of Highlands Captains who "bought" me more Darks. The Dark Necromancer are just too strong, providing tons of attack in a thin deck filled with Monsters. I defeated Heart of Doom, and claimed victory 106-50.

This weekend, I lost every game. I came in dead last.

Saturday:

A couple of my buddies came over for some gaming. One of them brought Tammany Hall. It was a first for all of us. Very interesting area control game. I got trounced. I was behind in the beginning, mid game one player was dominating, looking like it would be impossible for anyone to catch up. By the end game, my other buddy caught up and won, but I remained in dead last the whole game.

Then we played The Speicherstadt with the Kaispeicher expansion. This is my favorite game right now. The expansion really opens the game up. Without the expansion, I'm a pretty solid player. I win probably 8 out of 10 games on yucata.de. The first time I added the expansion in, it was a 2-player game and I won. Second time, 3-player game and I won. Third time 4-player game and I came in second place attempting the same strategy as the other two games. Now this time, three player game again, so I stuck with the same strategy and came in dead last. This is a good thing, I'm going to have to start experimenting with different strategies.

One of the guys had to leave, so we broke out A Few Acres of Snow. I've had this game on my shelf for a while, never played it. I did play it once online a while ago. I had to teach it to my friend from the rulebook, because I really forgot much of how the game works. Essentially it was like a first game. I was playing British, my friend French. This (Like Tammany Hall) was essentially a learning game. There was a lot of settlement on the French side, some settlement and a lot of development on the British side. Lots of raids and raids being blocked. For the life of me, I could not get the right card combination to start a siege. I probably had the right card combo several times (I had military cards in reserve), but at those times, I was focused on other things, getting money or settling, etc. I'm not a wargamer, so I don't think like one. This game will take another play or two to get in the swing of utilizing the cards and getting the timing right, for me. I ended up losing this game by a few points. French ended the game by running out of cubes.

Sunday:

I played a game of Friday and lost during the second pirate battle. I was 1 point shy of winning.

Friday night was supposed to be full of games, but we only got through two before his kids started getting a little crazy, and his wife was getting in a bad mood, so he thought we should probably call it early.

So with six of us, we started with a game of Saboteur using the Saboteur 2 expansion. The host dominated in gold at the end, with the rest of us all pretty close to each other.

But we all got our revenge on him in Betrayal at House on the Hill. Our host was the traitor.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
A dragon burst through the front door that he commanded to eat the rest of us. The dragon burned up the professor, while I (as the 9 year old girl) went insane from rolling the dark dice unfavorable and then reacting badly to a shriek that was sent throughout the whole house. Meanwhile, the jock was suiting up with the shield, the antique armor, and the spear to slay the dragon. The traitor was killed by the 13 year old boy, and the jock slayed the dragon easily, giving us the win.

It was still early, so one of the guys came over to my place and we played Super Smash Bros. Brawl for a few hours.

Fun stuff!

We had a nice 4-player game of Steam over Holland. One player never played before. I managed to give away the win (or at least a better score) by opening OSM in addition to NRS. I still find it a sublime game to teach 18xx.

In the meanwhile, I expanded my collection with 1835 and 1856, where the latter was the very last copy Mayfair had in stock. The box smells funny inside, after 17 years on their shelf.

AirJudden brought this over and we played the Gettysburg scenario. I've played over 200 sessions of M44 and C&C:A, so I was interested in trying out Battle Cry. If you know how to play any of the games in this system, you have the general idea of how they all work. It was an interesting session and although the mechanics are very similar to M44, it has a a slightly different feel.

My second youngest daughter, Stacey, was home for the weekend and played quite a few games with me. ALso, she offered to learn a new game, Egizia, if I would do her income tax. Sounded like a good deal to me. And she liked it enough to ask for ti again!

Friday
2 games of Crib with a friend early in the weekend.
With Stacey:
1 game of Egizia
1 game of Ingenious
2 games of Le Boomb to get the starting player of the above.

Saturday
With Stacey I played another game of Egizia where we used Le Boomb for the start player. My mother came for supper and after Stacey and I played 3 games of Mexican Train with her. Later My wife asked to play Ticket to Ride with the both of us. This is almost not shocking anymore. This must be the 5th or 6th time in the past 10 years she has asked to play a game,... and it is always this one. I am not complaining!!!

Sunday
Stacey was in the mood for some older games so we played Metro, Alhambra and another game of Ingenious. We used Le Boomb on all three. I also played one solo game of Friday and finally beat Level 2 with a measly 48 points. I think I will make sure I win at level 2 again before going on to level 3.

18 games this weekend (5 of which were Le Boomb, so, 13 regular games played)

After a dearth of no plays this month, I finally got a few in over the weekend.

On Saturday, my partner and I played two games while we caught up on TV. First was Dragonheart (he won) and then Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age (I won).

On Sunday we popped into our FLGS after brunch and couldn't resist walking out with a new prize. So we chose Last Will. I read the rules on the ride home, and we put it on the table for a five-player game. Good times!

We didn't do a whole lot of gaming this weekend since the weather was nice and the grass was tall. But the wife and I managed to sneak in a couple rounds of What's my Word?, she won both, and my daughter and I played 5 rounds of Dominion on Sunday while we waited for paint to dry.

I kind of let her go on her own the first game and she ended up getting beat pretty badly, so I took the time to ask her why she thought she didn't do better. It took her a minute, but she figured out that she had too many Kingdom cards in her hand and was wasting a lot of actions that would appear in her hand that she couldn't chain, so I told her to change her strategy a bit and gave her a push in the right direction, next game we tied. Was a mad dash to get the Provinces. Next game I won(went with Militia to limit her hand size a bit), and the fourth she won. So we decided for our last round to randomize the cards and play that way for the first time. Wow, that was a really strange hand with some strange combinations, but we tied that one 61-61. It's a lot of fun seeing her brain twisting and turning trying to figure out what she should buy and when she should buy it. But at 7, she's getting it pretty well I think.

Friday
1x - Saint Petersburg A royal butt kicking from my wife, she got her revenge

My wife has been in hot pursuit of turning the tide on her losing streak by giving me a royal beat down in Saint Petersburg after the two defeats she suffered at my hand on Monday. Unlike myself, she was able to get her financial and VP engines going right from the start and was therefore able to pick up a variety of Aristocrats during the game.

I on the other hand struggled to get any funds to do much of anything and was forced to pay homage in humble defeat.

Saturday
1x - Qwirkle Quick 2p game before my brother-in-law showed up.
1x - Dominion 3p game. My worst defeat yet, 13 VP (tons of curse cards)

My wife had broken her losing streak earlier in the week by beating me in Qwirkle, so she chose it for another quick match while we waited for my BIL to show up for a game. I was able to turn the tide with 320 pts (13 Qwirkles) to her 268 pts (7 Qwirkles). We both had a double Qwirkle during the game.

Once my BIL showed up we setup a game of Dominion which would be best summarized by a beating on behalf of my BIL's play. The Witch was one of the Kingdom Cards in play and my BIL had more 5 coin purchases earlier in the game than the two of us which he used to buy Witch cards. My wife was not too far behind in that department once the Curse cards started flowing. I however was on the short end with only one Witch in my deck.

We went through all of the Curse cards, the majority of which were in my deck, which significantly negated my score. My BIL won with 46 pts to my wife's 25 and my pathetic 13.

Sunday
1x - Scrabble 2p, won 356-258
1x - TtR - Team Asia Wife and daughter beat BIL and I (217-145)

My brother in law plays lots of TtR on his iPad and iPhone, so we thought we'd introduce him to the actual board game and change it up a bit with Team Asia. He and I partnered against the Queen and Empress of TtR, my wife and oldest daughter.

I thought we were well in the lead with all the route tickets my BIL was picking up while I worked on some of the medium routes in my hand. We had completed the long route and all of his routes. There were two things we failed to notice. First, all the new routes my BIL was picking up were short routes worth only a few points. Secondly, we didn't recall seeing the girls picking up that many new routes, but apparently they did!

They spanked us with the most route ticket bonus and and the Asian Express (longest contiguous path) bonus. Ouch! (We want a rematch!)

meeple Keep playing...

A lot of hours of gaming this weekend, if not a lot of games. Saturday we played a 3 player game of Mage Knight Board Game playing the intro scenario. It was pretty cool. So Saturday night, a buddy and I decided to play a full 2 player scenario. It was more of a nightmare. We only finished 2 1/2 of the 3 days in 5 1/2 hours. There was a huge amount of downtime. I think the game looks great and has some fantastic ideas, its just not worth a 6 hour investment.

Sunday was train game day. However, 2 of the 4 players were late, so Shane and I busied ourselves with 3 games of Glory to Rome. He won the 1st 2 and I won the 3rd one. Finally when everyone was here I taught them 18EU. Its so nice to have created some new train gamers here. Being able to play regularly (at least 1x - 2x per month) is a good thing. At any rate, the game took a long time because of a dinner break, inexperience and general yacking. In the end, one of the newer player got her first official win with about $8,200 in net worth. I was 2nd with $7,900 and change and the other 2 were farther back.

Great fun.

These new maps inspired me to bust out TTR for the first time in a long time. On Friday I played a two-player Switzerand game with my wife. Man, that's great. This map just brings so much more to the two-player game, fills it with interesting and challenging decisions. TTR is definitely going to get a new life in my house.

After that relatively intense experience, we played three games of Quarriors! which is our go-to game for quck, light fun.

My first play of this title. Chaotic and fun, about as I expected. My wife snuck in for a win while we were all worried about someone else. Good stuff.

Also a couple games of Incan Gold where I blew everyone out of the water. And a couple games of Gem Dealer where I lost miserably. And a game of Botswana where we were all pretty close; I came in 2nd.

Good game night.

First play for me. Typically games with little or no player interaction don't really interest me, but I found this game pretty enjoyable.

Friday:
Exalted: Legacy of the Unconquered Sun

Saturday:
Elder Sign

A light weekend here, my wife was out of town again. We snuck in a two player game of Exalted on Friday night, calling it in the early 4th year when it became apparent we didn't have the time to solve the epic quest. It was a tougher game without the pure cooperative nature playing solo provides, but at the same time, we didn't cooperate as much as we could have. Ashar liked it.

Saturday, with Ashar out of town, I went to Barnes and Noble to blow a gift card I'd received. Sadly, B&N's book selection has turned to crap, with half of the store now taken over by toys, greeting cards, and Nook displays - of the six or seven books I was looking for, I found only one. Ahh well, that forced me to buy a game instead. Elder Sign was the only halfway affordable game there, and it plays one, so I got it.

Now, I'd heard terrible things about the game. This is the main reason it fell off my want list, as I'm a fan of the Mythos, to the point I do tend to buy every game FFG releases on the topic (mostly happily, although I did trade the Cthulhu LCG right quick). Everyone hates Elder Sign because it has no choices. It's just dice rolling and matching, so the story goes. Well, I can't say as I disagree heartily - this is not a deep strategic, or even tactical, game. At the same time, I must say that I was surprised by how much fun the game is.

Yes, there is plenty of dice rolling. This is basically Arkham Horror Express. (If you've played Arkham, you'll be able to pick this one up quickly). And yes, while there are decisions to be made, many times they are self-evident. But you know what? The game is damn fun. I missed about 75% of the rolls I REALLY NEEDED (if you catch my drift), but once in a while I'd get exactly the roll I did need right in the clutch, and it was quite sweet. I played as Mary, and came within a few gates of shutting down Nyarlathotep - we were forced to do battle, and I managed to get very close to killing it off (down to 4 tokens on the doom track). So, a tense, fun game, even though the "game" aspect was not a brain-burn.

Like it's older brother, I think Elder Sign's sweet spot is likely 1-2 players. At that count, the game is definitely not too easy, but looks like it'll be just right (more plays are necessary to be sure). What appeals to me is how much of the Arkham flavor carries on, and I'm also excited for possible expansions. Now, I fully understand that those who want to play it with 4-8 are browned out that, like AH, expansions will be practically necessary to make the game tougher. At the same time, I'm excited by the open-ended possibilities the game provides. Because the base game is so simple, you could add on almost any new mechanic and the game would be fine. So, not only more adventures with more locations, but also more new ways of interacting, and, most exciting of all, new mechanics that use new specialized dice. Will we see such a thing? Hard to say, as FFG has not announced anything firm. But this game is crying out for expansions in the best possible way, and unlike AH proper, the expansions could be useful for a lower player count too. So far, Elder Sign gets my vote for the most overlooked game of 2011.

Friday - We had a quick 3 player game, well it actually lasted a long time but we ended up losing eventually. The players had to go home early. soblue So I played Total War: Shogun 2 until the wee hours of the morning. I bought it off steam on sale for $7.50 USD. I figured I couldn't go wrong for that price since I enjoyed the demo.

Saturday - We played 2 games of Runewars, which I enjoyed a lot. My wife not so much, she doesn't like the seasonal order mechanic at all. She prefers games that are less 'fiddly' in her opinion. Oh well...

Sunday - I played a mix of computer games. Company of Heroes for my WWII fix and Mass Effect 2 for my 3rd play through so I can see the Paragon options that I never saw before. First playthrough was Renagon, 2nd was pure Renagade. I also like to try out the different classes.

All in all a pretty good weekend.
