I think we should get to know each other a bit. Building community takes time and a little effort, so this is my little bit of effort to reach out to folks.

Answer the following questions as vaguely or specifically as you wish. I don't want to pressure folk, so skip any question you find too awkward. I just want us to get to know each other a bit. And yes, I'll start.

First, pick an RPG or "RPG Item" to use as your geeklist entry. (If you've never done this before, look for "Add Item" under this header.) Choose a game for whatever reason - doesn't matter to me. Give an explanation of why you chose the game - again, as vague or as specific as you wish. Love it, hate it, curious about it, can't get it out of your mind, etc.

Then answer as many of the following questions as you wish:

1. Where do you live?

2. Is there something about your username and your Avatar you want us to know?

3. How involved are you on the other Geekdo sites (BGG, VGG)?

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

6. What are some of your favorite things about role-playing?

7. Do you prefer games with a GM or GM-less? Any idea why that's so?

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

[10. Add your own question!]

I'll start by ignoring one of my own instructions above, just to give you permission to do so, too! I haven't chosen a game; instead I chose a Genre. I chose it because it's my favorite genre to play, and always has been. It was the genre of my first RPG, and of my most recently played game, and of at least a third of my games over all. (It's not easy to get a high percentage of gaming in this genre, since it's not very popular.)

1. Where do you live?

Central NH, USA. Between the White Mountains and the Lakes Region.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

Yes, the "1" bothers me. But when I signed up as "sos" (my handle online for over 20 years now), the system informed me it was too short.

3. How involved, if any, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Majorly. Less so now that rpg.geekdo is up.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Roughly 30 years.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

I stopped playing for a few years early in the 21st century. I'm still not playing anywhere nearly as often as I used to, but more than I have been for a few years.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

When an RPG session is good, it's much more exciting than 99% of other gaming can be.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Geesh, what an anal retentive question. I spell it differently as I please.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Um, I have no idea, really. Probably close to a hundred, anyway, if not over that. I like variety and trying new games, and I attended Origins and GenCon for a dozen years, as well as many smaller New England conventions. Tried lots of new games. I'd probably play again about 10% of the games I've tried.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

Just that I'm glad rpg.geekdo is up and running! What fun!

Ah... the venerable Magenta Box B/X D&D. My first real love. Oh how I didn't really understand thee... but thee gave me many hundreds of hours of enjoyment.

1. Where do you live?
In Plainville, MA. Sounds like a great superhero town, doesn't it? It's between Boston and Providence, RI.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
It's the name of a solitaire game I invented (and one of three which I invented and has now appeared in several popular Solitaire compilations on the net and at least one book). It's also the name of the energy weapon and the engine system for the Argo from Starblazers. Do I qualify as a Geek yet?!

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geek?
Mildly involved... mostly as a database resource. When BGG got going circa 2000, Derk asked me if he could import all of my session reports from the South Shore Gamers (my weekly game group). I said "sure" and some years later I was awarded with the copper, silver and gold pencil for session report writing and I had never actually written a single session specifically for the Geek

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Since 1980. I was 10 years old and don't remember which summer it was, but one of those years. So 30 almost 35 years now!

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
Pretty steady through about 1992 (end of College) then a break until 2001 when I started back up again (mostly local boardgamers who all sort of came to the conclusion that we missed it!)

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?
That it takes a big chunk of time. Unlike boardgaming or card games which can be done on short notice, RPGs take coordination and commitment that gets harder as I get older. But I will always carve out time for them ... always!

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
Role-Playing. I had to think about this... but then I figured just type it out and see and the dash just kinda snuck in there.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
A rough guess... 10. I'd play them all again. I have about 75 more I want to try, however.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I love Jenn. I love cats. I love my family. I love the team and early adopters that have brought RPG Geek to reality.

Anthropomorphic, the other animal genre!

1. Where do you live?

Kansas City, Missouri.

I'll add onto this list by including where I game. My FLGS of choice: 31st Century Games, Olathe, KS, a 20 minute drive south. For RPGs, though, nowadays I mostly play on an old muck, Sociopolitical Ramifications (telnet://spr.ctrl-c.liu.se:23 ; look for me in the Flagon's Tale there).

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

It's my surname.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Not really... I only discovered you could rate items, add them to an 'owned' list, or basically anything to do with the part of the item's page hidden behind the obtusely-worded 'Record Information' link until I joined RPGG. (I always thought that was for editing the page, wiki-style, and didn't figure out what I could actually do in this site until I tried to help seed RPGG!)

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

About 14 years.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

Oh, full of hiatuses, usually related to schoolwork. I'm in a fairly regular game now, though, looking for a second.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

1. The people I meet.
2. The writing ideas I get.
3. Crunchy crunch crunch!

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

I prefer to spell it "Joco de rol". I'm responsible for the only RPG to have been published in Interlingua thus far. ;3

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Oh, that'd be a different geeklist in and of itself ;3 About 30 systems, 20 or so of which I'd play again.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

General-purpose geek whose true extent of geekiness, for the time being, cannot be measured by Geekdō. I've written a few RPG things (a few of which have been published), translated a few others, am a chronic playtester, and proudly am a furry (and in fact, I've been called a furry evangelist... but that's another story).

explanation does not equal excuse
mbmbmbmbmb
I chose a slightly self-serving item in that I linked to my geeklist of campaigns I've run. That's a picture of me running, age 12.

1. Where do you live?

South Bend, IN-- yes Notre Dame's here and football season makes driving a mess given how small the city is.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

No...well, I have to admit it is taken from a family I used to always have pop up in my games...I imagined them being sort of like the Court of Amber family from Zelazny. Then I read a definition of "Mary Sue" characters and I phased them out.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Got my collection inventoried and wrote a couple of session reports. I've been on there for six years, but mostly a reader and lurker. I've played board games just about every Tuesday night with a group for about six years. So my ratio of plays to contributions is pretty low.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

My sister got the original White Box D&D Christmas of '75. So...since then. Ugh.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

A year off for grad school, and another nine month period after a game blew up (until my wife couldn't stand it anymore and made me run). But otherwise pretty steady running (mostly) or playing (not as much).

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

When personality issues bleed over and blow up in game. This many years of playing and I still haven't figured out how to head everything off before people get nuts. I'm better at spotting and defusing things, but it still comes out of the blue every once in a while.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

I like hyphens!

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Counting as RPGs then about 55+...maybe more. Perhaps about a third of them I'd play that system/game again, since a lot of them were older games (like Superhero 2044, Metamorphosis Alpha, and the like).

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I courted my wife by running games. Now I have to run several campaigns as part of my household chores...but seriously, I love running games and reading about new and interesting ideas. I mostly run our house homebrew system now, but I try to keep one or two slots available to run published settings/rules. Also, I've seen the electronic version of the City of Heroes rpg that never came out (as I wrote the module they used for GenCon and Origins the year they announced it). It was a faithful simulation of the mmorpg- for better or worse.

Dungeonscape because it is one of the recent books I've just had the most fun both reading and using.

1. Where do you live?

I live in Montpelier, VT.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

When I was a student, a guess speaker posed the question "How long do you have to live in a place to be indigenous, and how long do you have to live there to treat it like you are?" I took that to heart, so, as I lived in Pittsburgh at the time, I used Pgh as part of my username, and Arch represents my profession. It seems a bit awkward now that I've moved, but there you are.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

I was moderately involved around 2004-2007 I'd say. I've been less involved recently, but still a regular supporter.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

About 29 years, not quite 30 yet I think.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

There was a huge hiatus for me from 1993 to about 1999 while I was doing my architecture degree. After that my only roleplaying was a roughly weekly 45 minute to one hour session typed on IRC with two of my childhood friends. My first face to face game in over ten years was probably in mid-2006.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

When you have a good group of people it is all the off-topic banter actually. People can have such wonderful wits.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Without the hyphen, usually as two words.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I'd guess in the teens, although I haven't done a good count of what I played in my youth. In the last decade I can think of only seven. I tend to play one system a lot rather than dabble.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I used to always be the game master, but recently have managed a much healthier balance of being on both sides of the screen.

Gamma World Box Set (1980) was the first RPG I ever GMed; I thought it would be appropriate.

1. Where do you live?
Springfield, VA which is just south of Washington DC.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
The longest campaign I ever ran was a medieval fantasy world of my own invention which spanned AD&D 1st ed, AD&D 2nd ed, and D&D 3.0 over a total of 13 years. The Bearded One was the name of the main evil diety in the world's pantheon, and the players started to refer to me by His name by the end of the campaign.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I was involved to the extent of recording my entire board game collection there, as well as all of my board game plays and trying to get involved in some of the community (geeklists &c). I kept wishing there were something like that for all the RPGs I own. And look: Here it is!

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
My brother taught me to play Basic D&D (the blue book in the color box) as my birthday present when I turned nine years old. I have been a consistant role-player for 30 1/2 years now.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
I have never taken a haitus of more than a couple of months.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?
RPGs are educational in so many ways. I take the things that I read about or experience in RPGs and research them in real life to make the next game that much better. And RP has taught me to overcome my innate shyness; I was incredibly introverted when I was younger, and through role play, I learned how to first pretend to be extroverted, and then incorporate that into my RL personality.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
Most of the time I am a role-player, but see above.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
I honestly don't think I have ever tried to count the number of RPG systems I've played... there have been A LOT. At a rough guess, I'd say... maybe... 35 or so. I've learned that a great GM can overcome a bad system, but a great system can't make up for a bad GM, so I'd be willing to try any system at all, anytime.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I doubt there's much about me you can't figure out from the microbadges I've bought. I am pretty involved in the Mid-Atlantic LARP community though.

1. Where do you live?

California, between San Francisco and San Jose. We call it the peninsula, for geographically obvious reasons.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

I forget what my username is.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Primarily a lurker. I'm mostly a RPG player anway.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Since the late 70s.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

No voluntary idle periods. Some very inactive periods, most of them associated with time spent out of state.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

Immersion. I prefer to play long-format campaigns that give me time to settle into my role as another person. I consider role playing games to be little vacations from myself.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

no clue, really. I'd have to look through previous postings to find out but I haven't the time or energy to do so.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I've played dozens of game systems. I regularly play a few of them. I'd play more if it was with a game group with which I was familiar and/or confident. (I've had the pleasure of playing with some top notch GMs and gaming groups - I'll admit to being a little spoiled)

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

Call of Cthulhu is one of my favorite games, although you could not expect me to know all the characteristics from weapons :o)

1. Where do you live?

Actually, in a small village named Urduliz (someting round 12 km from Bilbao), in Biscay, north of Spain. My house is in the side of a small hill, surrounded by cows (and wolves :o), no, just kidding, only cows but of epic size LOL)

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

Megadoux, or Megas Doux, is a title created by Emperor Alexius I Kommenos for the commander of the fleet in the late XI century in Byzantium. It could be translated as Great Duke and has been my nick for the last 12 years or so

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Well, most of my contributions came as images. I like photography, altough I am not extremly good at it.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Ummm, time goes fast... something like 18 years

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

It depends a lot in my free time; if I cannot play rpgs, I play board games :-)

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

I am a very corrupt gamemaster who accepts bribes in form of food LOL

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

I suppose I prefer "Juego de Rol", the spanish equivalent

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Ummm, no idea. Perhaps not as much as I should... as you get older, you tend to use the more familiar ones and not to learn new ones unless neccessary

Well Doctor Who - such a wonderful programme and all the games so far haven't been that good. Time will tell if this year's new game based on the programme joins the others to languish in the pit of obscurity.

I have recently seen DW games have been played using HQ2 and Starblazer Adventures. I might give the latter a go (but I have to buy SA first) as I enjoyed the session report posted here.

1. Where do you live?

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

Not really. Been called andyl since I was 11 and I was lucky enough to get it as a username here (I am always disappointed when it has already been taken).

3. How involved, if any, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Very regular user and contributor. Still part of a local board gaming group. Still contribute to BGG.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

I'm going to take these two together if you don't mind. I probably started at around 14 (with my best friend as DM and my younger brother to make up the numbers). When I went to uni my roleplaying exploded. I was involved in 3 campaigns a week (one of which I GM'd). After university I tried to keep a group together when I moved home and failed. Then followed a period of wilderness, followed by a gradual re-introduction of playing one-shots and con-games. Finally recently spurred on by the formation of RPG Geekdo I have joined the local roleplaying club and have had great fun.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

Well one of my favourite things is generally the moment where something wildly unexpected crops up. An unanticipated solution, a GM springing an unusual surprise, a player who steps beyond their norm. Other than that just getting out of the house and meeting people. Oh and the deep satisfaction in designing your own settings and adventures.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Well I have been spelling it roleplaying.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Lots but not as many as Steffan. I like playing different sorts of games and I believe the system is partly responsible for setting the tone and feel of the game. The local club tends to rotate through many games systems as well so that suits me.

I'll start by ignoring one of my own instructions above, just to give you permission to do so, too! I haven't chosen a game; instead a chose a Genre. I chose it because it's my favorite genre to play, and always has been. It was the genre of my first RPG, and of my most recently played game, and of at least a third of my games over all. (It's not easy to get a high percentage of gaming in this genre, since it's not very popular.)

1. Where do you live?

São Paulo - SP, Brazil

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

Yohan Leafheart is the name of my main RPG character, that I created 10 years ago. It is the name I use for all my fantasy male cahracters and my handle around the globe.

3. How involved, if any, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Not enough. I had recently discovered Chit Chat, so I spend a lot of time there. I did some reviews, tried to be helpful but not that much.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Roughly 15 years. (half your time Steffan )

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

I'm in kind of an hiatus for the past 2 years after I moved away from my group and couldn't find another one.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

The creation, the discussion, the character building, all that jazz. I like creating worlds and recounting the adventures as much as I enjoy playing. There's another thing. In my ex-group we had 3 people that cook (myself and another two), and we played a lot of ars magica that is set on a version of Medieval Europe. We do a LOT of research on the region that is happening the game. Costumes, politics, geography and of course the food. We usually would, at least once a month, get the three of us together and do typical food for a given area where the game was happening.

As an example, we have a game running on the Isle of Man, so we had a full menu based on Potatoes and lamb.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

That's a silly question. NO answer.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Good question. At least ten I would say. A few Brazilians and I like testing new systems.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I love to cook, so if you need recipes or if you want me to be master chef in your wedding just send a go

1. Where do you live?

Quincy, Illinois; a stolid little city on the Mississippi River.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

It's an anagram of my whole name. I like the 'space opera' sound of it.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Not involved at all. But I check it at least twice a day!

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

I started in 1977 or 1978 when my friend Jason scored the red box version of D&D. It really had a major impact on my life.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

I suffered a small hiatus after college, and again after leaving my game group in St. Louis. I didn't really play at all for 11 years (except at conventions). That has recently changed since I just joined a monthly Aces & Eights game (woo-hoo!).

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

The lack of boundaries. I enjoy having the freedom to do just about anything. You can't really get that in a boardgame (although I love boardgames too).

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Roleplaying.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I've played in probably 20 systems. I would play any of them again. Whether I have fun or not depends more on the people involved than the rule system.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I'm currently reading the new BRP rules. I would really like to give them a try.

I chose Pendragon because it was the first game that really got me into role-playing. It wasn't the first game I played, but it was the one that really convinced how cool a hobby this could be.

1. Where do you live?

I currently live in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. It's halfway between the mountains and the beach. I've never been to either for an extended period of time.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

This is the same uid I've had since first venturing online over 20 years ago.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

I registered for BGG back in 2004 at the urging of a fellow Origins Volunteer, but never really got involved.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

I've played RPGs since the late 80s.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

It's been fairly steady. There's been some hiatuses because I tend to move around a lot (no move less than 500 miles), so I have to take time to build new groups.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

For me, it's the immersion and collaborative story-telling.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

I prefer the dash. Not sure why.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I've played a lot of different systems. I don't even remember them all. However, I can't think of one that I wouldn't be willing to play at least once more.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

Can't think of anything right now.

Chosen because its 1) most recent 2) a very interesting setting 3) a picture of my personal copy of the Limited Collectors Edition.

1. Where do you live?

Philadelphia, for my whole life.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
The word hierodule means 'holy slave' though usually associated with cult prostitution (which I didn't know at the time blush ). Gene Wolfe's (I'm a big fan as my site attests) aliens in Book of the New Sun are called hierodules. The Hierodula is also the genus of the praying mantis. I misspelled it when I first used it as a internet handle.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Fairly involved, I guess. I'd gotten enough geek gold through session reports and images and such to get an avatar and some microbadges, but uploading RPGs to rpg geekdo has sure increased that! BGG got me back into boardgaming a great deal while I was doing convention RPG gaming (and feeling like I was missing out on a big chunk of convention fun)

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Since the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set (First Edition) in 5th grade.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

Through most of high school my parents got me to lay off a bit, just because of the timesink and bad study habit issues, though I didn't even have a regular game: It was just time spent reading Dragon magazine, etc.

Also just before D&D3e I wasn't doing much.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

I was particularly pleased with the shared-world aspect of living campaigns (like Living Greyhawk, which was what I mostly played for eight years) both as a player and writer/GM.

Also I've always been drawn to the "empire building" side of D&D and other RPGs that support that style of play. Not just adventuring, but settling down and carving out a piece of the world.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

roleplaying.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Systems? 5 or 6 I guess. I'd play any of them, I suppose, in the right setting and with the right people.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

Eventually, as I add more Living Greyhawk RPGItems, I'll get to the ones I wrote. Game Designer badge here I come!

This was the first RPG I bought. Played it a lot, but got into AD&D fairly quickly.

1. Where do you live?

Probably the most complicated answer -- California. I have two residences, 1 in San Jose and 1 in San Luis Obispo. Plus, I'm frequently in Long Beach.

Edit: In 2010 this simplified to one place in San Jose, though I'm still in San Luis Obispo and Long Beach quite a bit

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

Just my perpetual Unix login name

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Fairly active. Less so now with rpgg

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

30+ 35 years. Started in 1979 before the DMG came out. I was a wargamer for 3 years before that.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

Several hiatuses, but I've always been gaming.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

The character interaction and the puzzle solving.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Role playing for the noun, role-playing for the adjective.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

As chronicled here, about 10 12 that I've played a lot. (tried, a few more) About 50 percent. However, a good GM can make almost any system work.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I'm not dead. I'm a collector of all games, with extensive board game, role playing game, miniatures and collectable card and even computer game collections. Despite this, I'm actually fairly selective as to what I pick up....

10. Why am I not as active as I used to be here?

Two children. The first born in 2010 and the second in 2013. Something had to give. I'll be back as time allows....

1. Where do you live?
Willow Street, Pennsylvania, USA.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
It was my very first nick on IRC back in 1994, and in 1991 I started a publishing and consulting company with the name. It alphabetizes well.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I've been increasingly more active over time on BGG since August 2008.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
I have never played an RPG in my entire life. I just purchased Rogue Trader after just missing the sellout at GenCon 2009 in August.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
See 4. I'd call it a lifetime hiatus.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?
I know of many very well-spoken and well-written creative people who have the RPG hobby in common. I sincerely believe that directed and participatory story-telling can fuel creativity. It's for this reason that I've recently -- at the age of 47 -- decided to give this hobby a sincere chance.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
All of these descriptions work for me.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
See 4.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I seriously mounted a campaign for Congress in 2004 before coming completely to my senses and decided against it. I have no regrets, as to be affiliated in any way with that assembly of losers (with rare exceptions) would have been shameful to me. I'm also a closet mathematician (a poor one at that) with degrees in business and electrical engineering. I retired at the age of 38. Since retiring, I dedicated over 1,000 hours per year to unpaid community service, though I've been involved in other projects since 2007 which have curtailed this activity significantly.

Sharon, MA, roughly midway between Boston and Providence.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
If people can't figure out where it comes from, I'm not going to spell it out for them.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
A casual user. Rarely contributed, mostly just lurked.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Since 1977.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
I've played regularly (if intermittently) ever since. The campaign we started in 1978 is still running (same players, same DM, same setting); although now it is just twice a year and as much a reason to get together as to play.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?
Answering that would require thinking, something I try to avoid while I'm at work.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
roleplaying, but I'm not consistent.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
Of the systems invented by the early 80's, quite a few (although I can't remember most of them). Since then, basically just D&D in various flavors.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I work with Dave. He'd force me to write something here sooner or later, so I decided to be proactive and not wait for his orders.

D&D Basic Set - where I really stepped into roleplaying games.

1. Where do you live?

Sunnyvale, a city at the south end of San Francisco Bay.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

Not so much. I made it up at one point, and it became a good on-line name, since it is rarely taken.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Discovered the 'Geek some years ago, and it quickly became the place to go to investigate details of older games. I managed to get back into wargaming regularly 3-4 years ago, and got more and more involved at BGG, and have been posting session reports of all my games there for the past couple years. (Still going to be a bit for the gold pencil though.)

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Well... I started in '82 with Tunnels & Trolls solo modules. That's 27 years... but see below.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

My involvement with RPGs started as I entered Jr High, and grew until I was part of a pretty good club at the end of High School (technically, it was a HS club, but several of us kept going after graduation). After HS, people slowly drifted apart, and the group slowly shrank to its core. There's been a couple of campaigns I've been involved in more recently, but I haven't really done much since about '93.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

Um... it's fun?

Okay. I like the world-creation aspect. An RPG session/campaign creates a place that exists collectively in the minds of the players. (Yes, I'm very much a simulationist.)

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Roleplaying. Perhaps, role playing. No hyphen.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Hmm... T&T, D&D B/E, AD&D, ST:RPG, GW 2 & 3, SF, RM/SM, Warlock, BRP, Palladium, GURPS....

Around a dozen or so. There's nothing that I'd refuse to play again, but I'm not enamored of Warlock (D&D offshoot played at CalTech), FASA's Star Trek, RoleMaster, Chaosium's BRP or Palladium's system, and it would take someone pretty eager for it for me to go back to them.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I have a lot of hobbies, and my attention tends to wander between them for which I'm currently 'obsessed' by. The opening of RPGG has shifted my thoughts on RPGs from 'something to do something about someday', to trying to figure out what to do about the various logistical problems of adding an RPG schedule on top of my wargaming schedule.

1. Where do you live?

I'm in Richardson, TX, just NE of Dallas.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

It's taken from a character in Steven Brusts Vlad Taltos series - the character is kind of the smart-a** comic relief, and I always enjoyed him, so . . .

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Somewhat. I've entered some session reports, some of the early games, and a few pics. Mostly I just lurk, and occasionally comment on others Geeklists or forum threads.

I did *live* with BGG for awhile, when I roomed with Aldie around 2000 or so, and BGG was run from a server in our house . . .

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Since the late 1970's - the first RPG I ever got was the "blue book" edition of the original Dungeons and Dragons.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

Not at all steadily - very off-and-on. I didn't play at all during college, then played a bit afterwards back in Wisconsin, then moved here to Texas in 1993 and it took awhile to find a group, played awhile there, and then that group split up (probably early 2000's), and not much since then.

I do take the chance to game with 'sos' at conventions every chance I get - one GenCon ('93 or '94, can't remember) I played more games of FUDGE with him than the games I'd originally registered for, because they were so much fun!

I have kept up with the newer games, just haven't had the opportunity to play - it's harder to schedule RPGs than it is boardgames, I find.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

When a group and a GM work well together, and things just gel, it's one of the most sublime gaming experiences you can have. Sadly, that seems to be a difficult state to reach, and it's definitely difficult to sustain.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

I can't say as I really care - I've probably used all of those. Mostly, my preference would be to abbreviate (like RPGing), but then I'm a lazy typist sometimes.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

A good question - probably in the low 10's that I've actually played. Of those, I'd probably only want to play 10-20% again, but many were fun when we played 'em!

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

Erm, nothing leaps to mind, so . . . no!

1. Where do you live?
On the western edge of the Kansas City area in Kansas. I'd give the town, but it is an infinitesimal spot on an infinitesimal spot and not exactly easy to find if you don't know where to look.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
I used to drink martinis in college which was then followed waaaay too much philosophic and political discussions.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I was not. I have a few friends who are but I, personally, was not.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Since I was 11 or 12. In short: A long time.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
There have been a few empty patches where all I was able to play were computer or console versions. I don't count those since there weren't actual people involved.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?
When you get the right group of people who are comfortable with each other and feel safe then you lose that line between character and player in a good way. And when that happens it makes roleplaying worthwhile. Otherwise it's just another exercise in probability.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
See above.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
Oh. Um. Counting home-made and revised systems? Twenty-plus. Hard to get an exact count. Maybe only three or four of those I'd consider getting back into, flaws and all.

The second answer doesn't count the four games I have going and their systems.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
Watch out for the monkeys. One of these days I will have that army. Once my wife lets me.

I used these rules for the most fun game I've ever run: The Phoenix Exodus Saga. I may have to get permission from the player to post the journals of Brand the Magnificent as session reports.

1. Where do you live?

Colorado Springs, Colorado

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

It is the name of the "good" deity who was absorbed by DarkStar in Hajime Kanzaka's Slayers universe, as well as the name of the lost ship Swordbreaker's AI in Lost Universe (same author).

Or, rather, it is one particular romanization. The other common one is Vorfeed, but I like the version I used better.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

A participator and contributor since the beginning of 2008, but slightly more of a lurker than a poster. It took RPG Geek to knock me over the 1000 thumbs mark.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Since Christmas of 1979.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

I've been playing more or less continuously.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

I love it when a character takes on a life of its own, and it becomes a whole other person instead of just an alter-ego.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

I think I prefer the one-word version, but I'll often put the hyphen in there just to get spell-checkers to quit telling me it's wrong.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I've played a lot of different systems. If I tried to enumerate them, I'd be here all day. Many of them I'd be willing to play again in one context or another, but by no means all. There were some pretty crappy ones.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I've become a bit dissatisfied with the current state of gaming in my group, and I'm trying to change it a bit using knowledge I have gained since RPG Geek went live. Here's hoping my Burning Wheel experiment is a success.

1. Where do you live?

Cheshire, England.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

I 'borrowed' it from one of the pre-gen PCs in WGR6: The City of Skulls.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

My involvement has waxed and waned, but generally I've used BGG to find out about highly regarded board games that I can try out with my group, and to find rules clarifications etc, rather than being part of the community. I'm a role-player first and foremost; board games are just something to fill the gap when playing an RPG isn't possible.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Since about 1990; I saw a group of people at school playing the item to the left at lunchtime (having never heard of RPGs before), bought my own copy, and got a few friends round to my house to try it out. The rest is history.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

I lost interest while at university (approx. 1997) then after moving house a couple of times, I felt like taking it up again (approx. 2001). I found a great group in Chester with a fantastic GM and have been gaming ever since.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

The fact that uniquely among forms of gaming, you are only limited by the imagination of the people round the table.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Role-playing.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I've no idea; a few dozen maybe? Usually it's the subject matter which determines whether I'll play a game or not, although there are some RPGs with horrendous systems I'd steer clear of; Space: 1889 springs to mind.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I'm not getting much chance to role-play at the moment, as I have a rather demanding six-week old daughter robbing me of my sleep every night!

This is my first RPG. A friend of mine bought it when we were in 5th grade because we were both big into comics. Heck of a game to cut your teeth on. I actually own the exact copy that got me into gaming because he moved on to Magic the Gathering and I traded all of my magic cards to him and his friends in exchange for all of their gaming books. In my opinion, I came out on the better end of the deal. On to the questions!

1. Where do you live?

Jackson, MS, USA, North America, Earth

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

It's Dumb White Guy with every word misspelled. I got it from a line from a Bloodhound Gang song, "Fire, Water, Burn." The line is, "Hello, my name is Jimmy Pop and I'm a dumb white guy."

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Pretty involved, trapped somewhere between GROGnads and lurker.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Fifteen years or so, I'd guess. Maybe upwards of 17?

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

Since I started playing, I played through solidly until a year after graduating high school when I moved to L.A. Had no friends in L.A., which meant no gaming, even though I lived just down the street from a WotC store. That's just ridiculous. (fun fact: my non-gaming first girlfriend introduced me to some of my favorite gamers and my favorite FLGS ever). During college, I did improv and realized my nerdy improv buddies would probably LOVE playing role playing games, so I ran a White Wolf post apocalyptic zombie campaign in the ruins of Los Angeles. I've been gaming regularly ever since (that was probably five years ago?)

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

Finding players, especially good players.

Oops. Misread. My favorite thing as a GM? Watching the light flash in my player's eyes when they peel back another layer of the mystery, or hearing them discuss their theories on what's really going on inbetween games like sessions were episodes of LOST or something. As a player? coming up with vivid quirky characters and seeing how they interact with the world around them, from the Rogue who used his wagon as a mobile pawn shop (those high level adventurers have to do something with all of that loot they no longer need, right?) to Toreador who would have been better suited as a Brujah had he not done so well convincing that pale artsy goth girl she should hook up with him.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

It varies on mood and motivation. Do I really want to exert the extra effort for an additional one keystroke for "role playing" or two keystrokes for "role-playing?" Today? No... no extra effort at all.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Probably ten to fifteen SYSTEMS, but that's lumping all Palladiums together, and D20s together, all White Wolfs together, etc. Subsystems, on the other hand, is a much larger number.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I teach sixth grade. I am married to my favorite geek in the world. I do amateur magic, comedy, game design, writing, and other stuff, but I'm too lazy to even attempt to make any effort to sell any of the above to a company.

10. Why did I think there was a 10th question?

I guess I just like round numbers.

11. Do you prefer gaming as a player or a GM?

Good question. Why didn't you ask that as your impromptu 10th question? Now the numbers aren't even anymore. But to answer your question, I used to love being a player and thought I was a terrible GM (I still think I was), but after many years of improv, when I started back gaming again, my GM skills had gone up a half a dozen levels without me realizing it because I hadn't been gaming. Nowadays, I LOVE being GM. For me, it's all about what neat little storytelling device can I incorporate into THIS game. I've had the players play out a scene from the villain's past to make his monologue about how he came to be who he is more interactive. I've run parallel adventures where players go back and forth between investigating their creepy principal when they were children to investigating the true cause of the headmaster's power now that they're adults. Right now, I'm running a parallel campaign to my wife's where the events of her completely different game (Traveller) affect the characters in mine (1920s Hunter: the Vigil). I love it. I love it. I love it.

Starblazer Adventures is the RPG I'm currently GMing with a Doctor Who background.

1. Where do you live?

Germany, Weißenthurm. About 1.5 hours driving distance from Essen

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

It's the name of my first Warhammer character who was a pit fighter. I managed to roll only top numbers, so he was a really heavy hitter.

I guess my avatars origin is obvious to fans of Doctor Who...

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Yes. marauder brought me here.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

My first was [rpg=1189], which I bought 1984 as it was released.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

I had a downtime of a few years which ended two or three years ago. Kids and wife where more important, but now the kids got old enough to start playing with them (boardgames). Soon RPGs will follow

Bad thing about the downtime: I sold most of my RPG collection which was quite large...

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

Being creative as a GM and try to break the GMs plot as a player

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Well, Rollenspiel...

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I did not really count them... my guess is more than fifty but less than a hundred. I'm a collector (who sold his collection, see above), so I have (had) many more I did read but not play.

Ah, the collection is building up again. cool

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

We keep our running games in our wiki: http://devilsclaw.de/ (warning: lots of german).

My current preference are [rpg=203] based systems.

The Babylon Project is the other RPG I'm currently playing, besides Starblazer Adventures. Since the latter is already in the list, I decided to take the Bab5 Game.

1. Where do you live?

In western-central Germany.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

Many people think, "marauder" comes from the BattleMech. I played this game very often, so this could be right, but it's not.
It goes much further back, into the time of C64 games. In "F-14 Tomcat" you got a name assigned by the game. I got marauder. Thats all
Since then it is my regular nick in computergames and internetforums (if available...)

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

I've been a lurker for a very long time (2002? I don't know anymore...)
Funny story: My very first "Essen Spiel" was 1992. I've been there because I wanted to find out more about roleplaying games. In fact the many boardgames really annoyed me! I came back with 1(!) D20 and a pentagramm-necklace...
Years later the urge for boardgaming grew bigger, the last few Essen visits were because of the boardgames and some "Werewolf" stuff.
Now, since RPGGeek is online, my interest in Boardgames cooled off and I'm back into RPG.
The circle closes

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

17-20 Years. Started somewhere around 1990.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

Played it steadily, but the last 6 years it almost stopped. Kids take their time.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

I really like when the game develops it's own dynamics: the GM starts improvising, the players get creative and all get into that kind of "flow" - everybody is focused on the situation pulling in one direction.

And another one: It's cool when the GM lets go and the players interact on their own. They usually have strange skills, quirks, flaws wich make the characters interesting. Let them play it out!

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Rollenspiel

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Difficult. 15? Most of the time "Das Schwarze Auge!

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I'm so done with fantasy. No more Orcs, Trolls, Goblins, Wizards please!
