Lost Civilizations of the Desert: An Old School D&D Campaign Using Top-Rated Modules

While updating a couple of my other lists, namely the Greatest D&D Modules of All Time, I noticed a number of epic modules were based in the desert. Together, you could string together an awesome and very affordable campaign for any variety of D&D or retro games. If you skip X10, the total cost of this entire campaign is $80 and will have the party well on its way to the 20th level. While two of the modules lack enough ratings to rank in my greatest modules list, the rest are on there, so you know these are quality adventures.

This $20 introductory module hurls beginning parties into a lost pyramid in the middle of the desert. Beyond the dungeon levels detailed in the book, another five dungeon levels and en entire underground city exist for the DM to flesh out. One reviewer on Amazon.com claims that this one module can get a party up to the 7th level, which would leave them prepared for the adventures below. If the DM does not flesh out these additional areas, he will have to adjust Desert of Desolation for a lower level party.
Alternative: To establish a strong plot-oriented feel to your campaign right from the beginning, the well-regarded Rahasia ($20) might be a better fit than the Lost City's sandbox style. It can be located in a forest near the desert that the PCs will eventually enter, and the Arab-like elves in the module make a good fit for their subsequent adventures.

Desert of Desolation includes three complete adventures, all of which are highly regarded individually here on GeekDo.

The Desert Nomad Series includes X4, X5, and X10. The first module, Master of the Desert Nomads (TL 48 - 54, B/X, $5), can probably be played as-is if the DM made the Desert of Desolation adventures easier for lower level adventurers. Otherwise, she will have to make it a little tougher for the higher level PCs coming out of the previous epic series.
X4 is followed by X5 The Temple of Death ($6) and X10 Red Arrow Black Shield. However, you will probably want to pass on the latter due to its expense (a whopping $65), the use of Battlesystem and/or War Machine rules (possibly an additional expense), and the necessity of locating it in the Mystara setting, which could make using other modules in this list difficult.

A mix of solid reviews on RPG.net and some decent ratings here on GeekDo make Necropolis a worthy addition for high-level characters in this campaign. At $20 used on Amazon.com, it's far from the cheapest of the modules listed here, but quality high-level adventures are rare. If your party makes it this far, then Necropolis could be a worthwhile investment.
