The first crop of RPG awards are up for vote now HERE.

I thought it was an... interesting... list and definitely ripe for some discussion.

Have at it!

I have to admit that I don't understand the time guidelines for the awards. The original core books were released in 2008.

D&D 4e shows up on the list because the new 4e Essentials came in 2010. When you vote for this, you are, essentially, voting for the new D&D Essentials line of games.

I should probably post in the main Geekies thread, but it's overrun with wargame chatter.

We're launching into our Pathfinder campaign later this month - hopefully in time for the end of the voting period. However, having played D&D 3.5 for many years as our staple-game and having given Pathfinder a very solid read-thru and listened to some Actual Play, I will likely be voting on this even if I can't get it to the table until after the end of the voting period.

This was the nominee that stuck out to me when I first saw the list. I have to admit that I don't know anything about the game nor have I really heard anything about it.

So... I'd like to hear more!

I've played it several times now and it's a very fun game. The idea is that there are problems in time which have to be dealt with so time travellers are needed. You can't send important people because they have a big time footprint, so you send temps. The whole game is presented as temp agency documents, the rules are the staff handbook the character sheet is your resumé, the staff are disinterested.

When you travel in time to deal with problems, all the dice rolls you make are entered into a matrix that is used to show how close you are getting to a paradox, and if you get a paradox, the world is destroyed. As well as paradox, you can get interesting time powers from the matrix such as those used by Bill & Ted (when we get through this, I'll come back and put my Dad's keys under this bush) as well as various intermediary temporal problems.

I started with a visit to Shakesperean London because Germaine Greer was there having fallen through a time slip in the rolling stacks of her university. She'd been helping Will with his music, Hey Jude instead of Hey Nonny Nonny. She may even have been his dark lady. She was retrieved although product placement was accidentally introduced to Othello, and then that had to be sorted too. The the characters dealt with a particle accelerator in the 60s which was sending messages back in time. It turned out that these were going to John Dee in Shakesperean London so they had to go back and make sure Dee got the messages. Because they'd already been here, the time matrix was already partially filled and things got really hairy and very close to paradox.

Finally there were jaunts to Ancient Sumeria and revolutionary France (to stop Bill & Ted kidnapping Robespierre).

This received my #1 vote, but kind of by default. I only own this and D&D4E among the nominees, and I prefer WFRP3.

Edit: Well, as it turns out, since I haven't played Essentials directly... this is the only nominee that I own and have played.

I nominated Legends of Anglerre and RuneQuest II; it looks like neither game has much traction here yet. LoA was a late release, so maybe it's a better candidate for next year?

I have Diaspora, Dragon Age, and Fiasco on my wishlist.

Twitter activity took off once the word started to spread about the GoldenGeeks for RPGs. For those curious, you can watch the nominees having a bit of fun in the sun (and they deserve it!):
