The Eye of the Gods. For as long as you can remember, your father searched for the Eye. The gateway to a new world and a life of everlasting peace. Some say it’s a myth. Others say it existed once but the fates have destroyed it to prevent contamination of our world with a would-be-paradise. But a few believe. Your father got close - and promised that after he found the portal, he would return and take you and your mother through to a safe place, free from the daily worries and dangers that plague the world you live in now. That was almost 20 years ago - and he never returned from his expedition to the Greymoor Mountains. The Mountains of Madness, or so they are known, have long been a mysterious place which few mortals dared to cross. They are so named because many who attempt to cross them wind up with few wits with which to cope with life. The terrible creatures are only part of the problem - and the slow march into derangement has claimed more than a few poor souls.

In the fateful days leading up to your decision to follow in your father’s footsteps there was much trepidation. You tried to make it in this harsh world but too often life’s pains bore down on you. The time has come for action. You gather what few bits of equipment you own and head to the Tavern of The Falling Leaves.

Your equipment currently consists of: Rusty Longsword (+0), well-worn Tunic, some old Leather Boots and 2 gold pieces.

Welcome to the Mountains of Madness!

This geeklist is for 2P adventures only. If you're looking for the 1P adventure Geeklist, go here instead: The Mountains of Madness - 1P Adventure

When you have read and fully understood the rules in the master news post you can add your geeklist entry below and wait for a Game Master to start your adventure. Be sure to provide the following information in your initial geeklist posting:

Name
Race Class
Combat +X
Fortitude +X
Reflexes +X
Willpower +X
Hit Points X
Sanity Points X

Both players should give this information - the geeklist entry by player 1 should be followed-up by a comment from player 2 with their starting information. The adventure will not begin until both players have posted their information. Remember, they post to the same (single) geeklist entry. Please don't screw this up

Remember, the Game Masters are busy running the adventure and it may be a day or two before they start your adventure. Subscribe to your geeklist item so you know when your Game Master has started the adventure. Do your best to check in often and with some hard work, we'll get everyone through the adventure.

Good luck and may fortune smile upon you!

Ossaria takes a step forward making sure to keep Jakob at her back. "I am Ossaria daughter of Oevi Godor. I ask nothing of you but safe passage through this mountain. I prefer to keep my companion intact as well. His sword has been. . . .convenient. . . to have on this adventure.

Time has not been kind to this dwarf. Her face lined with wrinkles, framed by two frazzled braids of dirty blonde hair, she sits alone at a table in the corner of the Tavern of the Falling Leaves, sipping cheap ale from a mug. The longsword leaning against the back of her chair has seen better days. Her clothes are stained with the dust of travel and a few splotches of whatever stew the Tavern has served today.

She surveys the crowd determinedly, perhaps looking for a suitable companion for her endeavour.

Prelude - The Tavern

The barkeep, Sama, has been busily serving patrons this fine fall day. The harvest festival is nearly upon the town and the locals are getting in their last cozy visits to their favorite watering hole before tourists flourish here and take the place over for a week. You’ve already been mistaken for a harvest-goer by more than a few locals. You look around and see a few friendly faces among the crowd. Perhaps one of them would make a fine adventuring partner on your journey.

You have become a seasoned adventurer on this trip, and no matter what the giant beast does, you are ready for it. You easily determine the beast’s weakness! You masterfully cut into the terrifying creature, taking off several tentacles and the left hand. This hobbles the beast and though it continues to come after you, it is easily bested! You stand over the titan and look around - you have Survived!

Baeryndora finds 1d6 + 1d6 = (3) + (6) = 9 gold!

Eweflenda finds 1d6 + 1d6 = (6) + (6) = 12 gold !(if you are a Rogue, add +2gp)

You labor to catch your breath. The Titan lays before you defeated. Is this the really the end? You stare at the falling mists of the giant stone portal before you. The Eye of the Gods! This is what your father sought. There is no turning back - you stagger forward with what strength you have left. As you cross the threshold the mist surrounds you and pulls you forward. Behind you is darkness. Ahead, a soft white light - almost featureless until you see a silhouette appear. Small at first but growing larger as you are pulled forward - no longer under your own power. The shadows disappear and the figure in front of you is revealed - your father stands before you. He smiles brightly, “I’ve been waiting, my child. I knew you would find your way here eventually. I’m sorry I was unable to return, for the portal only goes one way. But I knew... and never lost hope that you would follow.” Is this real? Perhaps you’ve really gone insane instead? It doesn’t matter... this is your reality now and there is no going back. You and your father step forward into a new world.

Congratulations, you will receive the special winning microbadge:

mb Mountains of Madness - The Eye of the Gods

I think that my first instinct would be to go back the way I came, but I know that from reading the murals, simply turning back around and going back probably won't get me out of the palace.

I would like to record as many of the strange dot patterns as I can remember (but don't want to wander back into any of the rooms quite yet). I think that the secret to getting out is in the throne room. I sit in, and search under and around the throne looking for a secret passage or secret exit.

Something caused the eye to become angry- I study the murals for more hints and secrets, perhaps it is the act of wandering around that caused the eye to become angry. Hopefully I can understand the warning implicit in the murals. I make sure not to touch or take anything.

Perhaps I should also use the gem i took from the park. Since it was a symbol for the eye, maybe it could offer me some protection or guidance in my search for the exit.

If all else fails, I return to each of the rooms searching for clues and recording the symbols in my journal.

Panic-stricken, you fumble around in the royal palace for hours, looking for a way out. The front doors are closed and locked, too big for you to open on your own. The eroded areas of the palace walls open to high sheer cliffs much too dangerous to try and travel down. You stray around in the palace and you loose yourself in the extensive corridors. The mental exertion and stress cause you to lose 1 SP.

The line between reality and fantasy has blurred to the point where you can no longer distinguish it. Visions, thoughts and feelings blend together into a jumbled mess. Perhaps this is all a dream? After all, these horrors can’t be real... can they? Or, just maybe, you are now one of the horrors you sought to defeat. Prelude: The Murkwiddle Tavern

Autumn in Murkwiddle. And you’re at the Bloody Bear, sousing yourself for what lies ahead. The barkeep, Sama, has been busy serving all afternoon. The harvest festival is on its cusp, and local folk are getting in their last bottoms before travelers take over the place for a week. You’ve already been mistaken for a festal by more than a few locals.

Looking around, you see a few faces here and there that don’t make your bile rise. Perhaps one of them would have make an acceptable adventuring partner on your journey ...

You stand up and keep walking only because you feel that if you sit, you will get tired of sitting. Walking, the scenery is new each step, and pleasantly, freshly depressing. You see shades of despondency you’ve never noticed before. You stop and inspect the single leaf of a plant, seeing the end of light and love and the world in whole in its small, crumbling veins. You stare at your reflection and take a grim satisfaction in your inability to see much at all.

Finally you can’t take it any more. If it’s all the same, your legs would like to despair in a different state of matter. They collapse into india rubber, and you collapse into the water. As you catch hold of a slimed stump barely protruding from the murk, you lift your head slightly and think about how tragically meaningless even such an action is.

As your body floats, covered in muck, just under the surface of the water, you resignedly let your head back and feel the water rise to your cheekbones. And slowly you drift down the surface of the swamp in a sluggish current. You suffer 1 SP damage.

Your madness does not leave you, but hangs on to you. You can see it on back of you, a monkey just out of sight, pushing poisonous words into your ears. And you see the words crawl into your mind, where they jump about. Sometimes you can hardly sleep at night.

But you don't mind. It's only those who are not mad who mind being mad. The mad don't mind it at all, you find. The world is new every day, and every time you check it seems the rules of the universe have been rewritten. Trying to discover them all before bedtime each day is very fulfilling.

You have forgotten what it was you were looking for, but that doesn't bother you now. You've thought of several thousand other quests that need attending to. And you're fairly sure no one else will be competing with you to complete them. You can afford to take your time.

You have gone mad, as befits your quest, facing the Mountains of Madness. Your spirit was strong, and your body stronger. But even the strong fail at the end, and your end has come. But in the halls of your fathers, you will be remembered in honor. Bravery and valor outlast even the cords of the body and the light of the mind, and you have gained both. If you have not followed your father, then perhaps he is following you. You set off to find out.

Your adventure has concluded, brave adventurer. We want to thank you for playing The Mountains of Madness. Within a few days you will receive all microbadges and geekgold due—please be patient. In the meantime, we invite you to kick back at the Tavern of the Falling Leaves for some stories both brave and bold. The design team and GMs that brought you this adventure feed off of the stories told in the Tavern—so please feel free to contribute to the post-adventure fun! In addition, we would love for you to rate this adventure—you can do so by visiting the official Mountains of Madness RPG entry and at the bottom you can ‘Add Information’ to give it a rating and comment.

Chapter 5: The Tomb of the Ancients

Chapter 5-1 Great Stone Maze

You follow the path behind the palace into a lush forest. Soon the path narrows, and you walk through a large stone archway into a passage. You continue and soon lose yourself among the twists and turns of several narrow passageways. The stone walls rise high above you, twenty feet at least, covered with signs and symbols.

Then you hit a dead end. You feel about but find no hint of a door, no secret way to continue. You backtrack, strike out in a new direction from the last intersection, and hit another dead end. Puzzled, you try again, and again, and finally you find yourself in an intersection from which twelve narrow passages shoot off in different directions, like rays of the sun.

Standing in the center of the intersection is a large stele carved in a flowed script:

Ten Eyes I have, and each stares at you,
You are caught in my trap, and safe passages are few.

Left, Right, and side to side,
My eyes catch you in the crossfire, you cannot hide.

If you choose wrongly I will feed you to the thing that is always hungry,
If you choose correctly you will see the thing that the gods never see.

Please choose a passage to travel down and also make a Willpower challenge roll with your selection. If you choose correctly, you will get a bonus to your roll.

You run down the passageway you chose, confident that of all the choices, this was at least not the worst.

The triangles etched into the walls appear to be blinking at you. You blink back. They continue blinking—but only when you’re not looking at them. You hear movement behind you. The Sun seems to be trying to follow you down up the chamber breathing. The breathing in your ears isn’t there is breathing in your ears, but you don’t hear where it is. It snorts and chomps at your ears, taking out small pieces of your mind. An eye floats your eyes down a river to the seems that your Eye is floating after you, burning with invisible flames so bright they blind your Eyes. You hear madness has taken you. You lose 1 SP. You have triumphed over you aren’t. Arenn’t yuo

Veils and before your shift move eyes, and days that scenes of days already not now bringing gone will come. You see you have women you have loved, beasts you have men cheated slain, you have enemies. Fled, joys of love pain you of rejection, and all feel the searing the. Recall the day you set you you ate the meal out.

Introduction

Welcome traveller! As soon as your partner has joined you, the adventure will start.

You made it through the gate, however that lust cut was too much for you. You have died facing the Mountains of Madness. But let no person doubt your heart and conviction. The mortal shell which you call your body has given out. While the spirit remained willing it cannot do so without help from the flesh and blood which drives it. As light fades to black you think back over your adventure and can’t help but smile. Bravery and valor were yours, dear adventurer. And nothing can take that away.

Although he did not succeed in finding the Eye of the Gods, Macavity is content that he has followed in his father's footsteps.

As Macavity takes his dying breath, he recalls what the hermit told him about giants. "The yaks are coming," he murmurs. "The yaks...."

William had a very exciting adventure in the Dungeon of Doom, he was all but given up for dead, but his father found him in the Dungeon when he rallied the townspeople together and they all stormed the dungeon.

While being nursed back to health he wasn't able to exersize or do much physical activity as his leg was healing from his earlier adventure. So he made friends with the local mage and has begun to add magic to his stable of abilities.

Willam knows that there is strength in numbers and he managed to talk one of his friends into joining in his next adventure. Off they marched towards the Mountains of Madness...

Dwarf: Add +1 to Fortitude.

Rogue: -1 Fortitude, +3 Reflexes, +0 Willpower, +0 Combat
Special: The Rogue has a knack for gold. Any time gold is found from combat treasure, the Rogue gains +2gp.

Your equipment currently consists of: Rusty Longsword (+0), well-worn Tunic, some old Leather Boots and 2 gold pieces.

Deepbeard had known William the Nimble for quite some time, and had always had admiration for the child who had charged an orc with nothing but a rotten stick. Deepbeard had been one of the townspeople who raided the dungeon, for his family had been friends with William's family for decades. After William's adventure in the Dungeon of Doom, he and William had also become close friends.

William begged Deepbeard to accompany him on his mad quest, which Deepbeard was loathe to do. "No matter how great the reward at the end, you still must make it to the end," he said to William. But William retorted that he had survived the Dungeons of Doom, and he would survive this. Deepbeard said, "yes, but we had to drag your (soon to be a) carcass out of there. "Exactly!" exclaimed William, "if you go with me, we'll be almost guaranteed to retrieve the Eye of the Gods!"

This was the spirit that Deepbeard had always admired in William. "Besides," said William, "my father won't let me go if you don't go with me. He says he's too old to go searching for me again, and is too old to quest for the Eye, with or without me, and you are the only one he trusts with my life..."

With a sigh of resignation, he agreed to go along on William's mad folly.

Chapter 4 - The Valley of Giants

Chapter 4-1 – The City Gates
Beyond the swamp the path widens – enough so that four of you could easily walk abreast – and ascends again. Before long, you see above a massive wall built into the mountainside, with two great golden gates blocking the path ahead. Three blond giants stand before the gates, their arms crossed over enormous axes and shields as they stare straight ahead. Their attention is so focused on the path that perhaps you could sneak around them to open the gates – but even from here you can see the imposing lock that guards them.

The choice is yours... you may choose to confront the giants in combat or to sneak around them. If you attack, you can assume the City Guards are AC15 and you are free to make your four attacks now. If you sneak around and unlock the gate, please roll a Reflex Challenge at DC14.

You slip off the path and around the giants; their gaze never wavers toward you, and you reach the gates. You see a great brass lock with a keyhole and a combination! It will require all your wits to get past - but, more than that, it will require skill manoeuvring the tumblers. After a few moments, the lock clicks open with a firm snap. The hair on the back of your neck rises as you feel the giants finally turn toward you – you dive through the gate, but not before one of their massive axes cuts deeply into you! You take 1 HP of damage and crumple.

You cast about for shelter, hoping to hide from the terrible lizard above. There - in the distance - a crevice between the rocks. Slowly you begin to creep toward it, but then, like a wave crashing upon the shore, a terrible shriek hits you! You are nearly knocked over by the sonic blast! You run as fast as you can and get between a crevice in the rocks. The Wyvern swoops down but cannot touch you in your rocky sanctuary.

Roleplay Challenge
Please provide a short (no more than 500 words) final response for this roleplay encounter and include any reaction to what has happened. Please provide a d20 roll with your post. The GM may give you a bonus on your roll based on the roleplay exchange. In a 2P game you are free to interact with each other as well as the GM and each player is expected to provide a roleplay response and each will provide a d20 roll with their response. All roleplay challenges will be similar and the game assumes you will remember how to do this in the future.

You keep your wits about you, but the great beast lumbers forward, as if to crush you...

This is a Combat Challenge: TITAN AC 18

This is a special combat. For a 1P game, you roll 4 attacks as usual. For a 2P game, each player will roll 2 attacks each to try and topple this mighty foe. Each player gains a special bonus to these attack rolls equal to the greater of their current HP and SP! You must score two or more successful attacks to defeat the Titan and survive the adventure!

Alas.

Talk about a fateful choice to abandon the +2 sword...

The great old one over-powers you in mind, body, and spirit. It eviscerates you with a mere flick of its claw, causing you grievous injury! You start to fall into darkness as the Titan comes in for the final blow. Somewhere between death and insanity, your body fails.

Your adventure has concluded, brave adventurer. We want to thank you for playing The Mountains of Madness. Within a few days you will receive all microbadges and geekgold due - please be patient. In the meantime, we invite you to kick back at the Tavern of the Falling Leaves for some stories both brave and bold. You can enter the tavern by clicking here. The design team and GMs that brought you this adventure feed off of the stories told in the Tavern - so please feel free to contribute to the post-adventure fun! In addition, we would love for you to rate this adventure - you can do so by visiting the official Mountains of Madness RPG entry and at the bottom you can ‘Add Information’ to give it a rating and comment.

Forever trapped in a mortal shell in an endless struggle to stop other would-be adventurers from going where you have gone.

While Damian keeps the Wyverns attention focused, Kreya is able to slip into a crack in the rocks. The Wyvern turns as to dive towards you, but changes direction at the last moment. Then, like a wave crashing upon the shore, a terrible shriek hits you! You are nearly knocked over by the sonic blast! Damian runs as fast as you he can diving into the crevice in the rocks. The Wyvern swoops down but cannot touch you in your rocky sanctuary.

You hurry forward and fell two of the giants before they can react, but the third lands a great blow before you trip it and send it tumbling down the mountain! Axshun finds 1d4 = (3) = 3 gold, while Minty finds 1d4 = (2) = 2. But each suffers 1 HP damage.

Sid successfully tripped through time from the future. Unfortunately, he got caught up in the moment of time travelling, and did not plan on a way to get back to the future. He is rather short-sighted that way.

( I am helping out your Gm for a little bit)

Your first knock is met with silence. Your second is met with the sound of loud snoring and a muffled, “Can’t you tell I’m trying to sleep in here?” But your third seems to stir the occupant, and clattering and banging fills your ears before the door snaps open.

A spry old man with bright red spiky hair stands in the door, a stout walking stick in his hands. Behind him the structure’s interior seems much larger than you had imagined – and a bright, cheery fire beckons from inside.

The man’s eyes bore into you. “Fortune-hunter, eh? These cursed mountains seem to be crawling with you folks now – no doubt you’ve fallen prey to all those silly stories about my youth, how I crushed the giants and found the E-. Oh, never mind. Well? What do you want? Why shouldn’t I just push you down this mountain?” he says with a grin, and you feel the ground below you slope backwards, forcing you to grab the man’s walking stick – held in his surprisingly strong grip – to prevent yourself from falling.

What do you say? Please post a response here.

Sid jestures to Kelig, "Allow me to try." Sid tries to offer some of his coins...

"Good sir, much apologies for disturbing your slumber. For you see, I seem to have lost my boots." Sid points to his feet floating inches off of the ground. "Well, not so much lost them, but more threw them off of a cliff to distract a wyvern. Did you know that wyverns are considered an endangered species 2000 years from now and special wyvern reserve is created in the foothills just off.... Ah, what was I saying? Ay yes, perhaps I can offer you a gold coin or two or three in exchange for food, shelter, and perhaps some boots? For you see, should I manage to return, these coins will be of little use to me other than as a display in a history museum perhaps."

Reigar finds 2d6 = (5 + 6) = 11 gold and Sirian finds 2d6 = (1 + 3) = 4. (if you are a Rogue, add +2gp)

Father? Are you for real? Or is it yet another trick by my Nemesis, the insidious taxidermist hermit daemon? I mean you do look a bit like him. I even had my memory of him erased by that kind ghost from Chapter 5.2, but I can still remember him somehow... Now, I only have one sanity point left, so my mind could be playing tricks on me. And what's that music? (Reigar again hears the Lizard King singing.. about "the end", although in a much higher pitch) . "The music? Do you hear it too Sirian?"

'...And he came to a door. And he looked inside....'

"Father"

"Yes son?"

(Reigar had enough and drinks the sanity potion). Ah, much better!

To heck with it. Sirian, are you still with me? I'm glad you decided to stick with it until the end, and not run back to the village, just for that microbadge. Speaking of, is there any ale to be had in this place? My pockets are quite filled with gold, so I'll buy ya all a round. Even the lizards, as long as they are quiet!

In any case you've got some explaining to do dad...

Maybe I should have risked that arcane tunnel Anselmo thinks. This is bloody cold.
He strains and tried to find the strength within himself to take another step, then another.

You take a deep breath and summon your reserves, but the cold is too much! By the time you have reached the summit, you stand exhausted, unsure how you will recover! You suffer 1 HP damage!

Proceed to chapter 3-3b.

Chapter 3-3b – A View of Heaven
At the summit, the starlit view is stunning, but your eyes are drawn upward as the sky cleaves in two before you. Beyond you see a flickering panorama – a peaceful and idyllic valley one moment, a terrible fiery furnace the next. After a moment an old, weary man peers down at you – a man with your eyes and your sister’s crooked smile. Your father! Or is it – for after a moment, his eyes fill with anger, and his baleful glare cows you. “Is that my child, so weak and pitiful? Surely you cannot hope to follow me!” Then his voice falls into sadness – “I mean, you should not!”

Anselmo, startled, recovers a bit. He then narrows his eyes and looks at the apparition intently. Finally, he makes up his mind. His father would never be so condescending and cruel. This had to be another test.
He tries to sound confident, but all he can muster is an exhausted almost whisper. "Whatever you are, you are not my father. Don't waste your breath, you will not dissuade me. I am going to find the eye - or die trying".

He turns to continue.

The figure reaches to embrace you, and you feel its fiery fingers touch yours. At first the warmth is welcome, but all too soon it burns you deeply, and you suffer 1 SP of damage. You hear your father laughing at you as you begin to descend the far side of the great mountain. Was it really your father? Is the mountain playing tricks on your mind? You press onwards, and finally you descend the far side of the great mountain.

how quickly your HP and SP abandon you after your friend did...

Forever trapped in a mortal shell in an endless struggle to stop other would-be adventurers from going where you have gone.

(shacky asked to help his groups along, so I'll be popping in at times to check on you)

They guide you to their camp, and provide you with refreshing stew and a welcoming attitude you find refreshing. “We have some fine wares as well, should you be interested. Let me show you what we have on hand - perhaps you’ll find something of use, provided you have a bit of coin in trade!”

Traveling Caravan Equipment

2gp Sword +1
5gp Sword +2
5gp Potion of Fortitude (+1 Fortitude for rest of game)
5gp Potion of Agility (+1 Reflex for rest of game)
5gp Potion of Willpower (+1 Willpower for rest of game)
8gp Sword of Elven Antiquity +3

Note: The caravan has an unlimited supply of swords and potions - you may buy to your heart’s content (sword bonuses, however, do not stack for individual players - so buying two +1 swords for a single player is no better in combat than having just one!).

If you buy the Elven sword, you will also obtain:
mb Mountains of Madness - Sword of Elven Antiquity
Both players will get the microbadge even if only one sword is purchased.
Please note: this is your only opportunity to obtain this sword (and microbadge)!
If you purchase any equipment, be sure to note it with your statistics on all your posts!

(In the master news post, it says that you cannot share gold after one player dies. Does that imply that you can share gold while both players are alive? If so, Thoradin is welcome to spend my remaining 2 gold.)

I throw my old Rusty Longsword off a cliff (I really hope this Sword of Elven Antiquity wasn't a scam).

Chapter 2-2b – The Hermit’s Door

I think to myself, 'not everything appears as it may seem. there is more to this man than meets the eye. There is no sense trying to escape this'.

I say to him, "sir, would you be so kind as to allow two weary travelers the luxury of a warm fire and a short rest? Maybe we could even swap a few stories? I'm even willing to offer you some gold for your generosity. I'd actually like to get your opinion on a matter that concerns us. What do you think?"

I look at the man and then look back at Karm to reinforce that both of us are in need of help. I think about casting a spell but my intuition instructs me otherwise...this man isn't going to be 'charmed' by me.

When i first see the old hermit i think back to the tavern of the falling leaves i remember that there were a few men talking about a demon with the power to move the mountains and one wizard actually tried to duel him. In the first 3 seconds the demon had dehydrated his body and he was just a pile of dust. I would be willing to bet all my money that this man is the demon that they were talking about.

I say sir we mean no harm we just are weary adventures that have been traveling and would appreciate a few hours by a fire and some advice in these strange mountains.

When i see Bargle look back at me i know he is in agreement.

The Hermit laughs heartily and steps back, inviting you inside with a sweeping gesture. “It seems I may have misjudged you, lads. I will share my hearth with you, good friends! Please, be seated and I will bring us some tea.” After a few minutes of shuffling around the small kitchen, the man returns with some fragrant – though, as it turns out, barely palatable – tea. The Hermit gestures around the walls, “Admiring my trophies, are you? Ha! They are nothing – just an illusion to scare off the residents of these Mountains. Didn’t think about how they might just attract you treasure hunters. Ha! In point of fact, I know next to nothing of these mountains – after all, I came here to find peace and quiet. But I needed something to keep the giants away.”

The Hermit gestures to a long scroll on the far wall. “Over the years I’ve written everything I’ve learned of them there – but there’s only one thing that’s actually useful: they are deathly afraid of yaks! Tell ‘em the yaks are coming right before they are about to strike, and you might just get past those big shields of theirs.”

You pass another hour in pleasant conversation with the Hermit, his fire warming your feet, before you note the sun falling low in the sky and bid farewell to hurry on your way. “Goodbye and good luck! And don’t tell your friends about me!” the Hermit calls after you.

In addition, you have dealt with the Hermit humanely and will receive:
mb Mountains of Madness - Old Hermit

Chapter 2-4 – Escape from the Wyvern!

With the Hermit’s house behind you, the valley begins to rise again, and soon you find yourself laboring up another set of frigid switchbacks. Glancing west, you see a huge shape silhouetted against the orange sun – the Wyvern! A few minutes later you realize that it is spiraling in toward your path. It roars in anger, its tail stinger dripping with poison and its claws flexing as its wings pump toward you.

The trail leaves you terribly exposed to the terrible beast – and certain death. But ahead you see two possible escape routes ahead on the trail – a square opening, its doors hanging askew and covered with blocky runes, and a narrow staircase that winds through a deep crevasse, ascending to the top of the great mountain!

Escape lies just a few hundred steps away, but the Wyvern is closing impossibly fast. Can you maintain your balance as you sprint for escape?

Reflex Challenge at DC 13 and please note which escape route (over the mountain or through the mountain) you take! (in a 2P game, both players must take the same path)

In the time we spent in our cramped quarters avoiding the Wyvern, Verrine and I talked quietly. Honored I am that she came to me with her fathers maps and told me the legend of the eye of the gods, it seems we both still have doubts. We are ill equipped for the challenges we have thus far faced, and it has been only through luck, or forces unseen that we have survived to this point.

"Verrine, it was my honor that you choose me to be your companion in this journey. Your dreams are important to me, but your friendship and life even more so. As your friend I would follow you in whatever direction you choose, but I do think it's wise that we head back to the tavern now. Who knows what it is that awaits us there. If that town isn't the place for us, we do have some coinage that we can use to get supplies, and to look for another town, perhaps a safer adventure?"

"We're in agreement, then. We will leave these mountains and see if we can find other companions of like mind before taking on so much of a challenge. Now let us stay vigilant so that we don't get eaten by a mountain lion on the way back down!"

(I accept your offer of the "I wimped out" microbadge. I saw a post by wavemotion that said he intended the adventure to have a 10% completion rate. Considering that we have had 3 encounters & have already lost nearly half of our hit points, it doesn't look like we would be in that 10%.
I am now interested in playing on the RPG part of BGG though. I didn't even realize that there was a method of playing online on BGG & am glad I found this adventure while it was available! It was also nice to recruit my friend.
Thank you for being our GM. This was lots of fun. Do you run anything else or have any recommendations? I would prefer a basic D & D type set-up for starters.)

Wimped out microbadge is fine with me. I play many boardgames, but have never done any true RPG things before. I'm glad my friend twisted my arm to do this with her. I had a lot of fun, and do very much appreciate the patience you had with me.

I'd like to thank you and BGG for the opportunity to participate in this! Thank you ever so much for being our GM!

Accepted And this microbadge is equally rare as the Eye of the Gods!

Discretion is, as they say, the better part of valor. While you have given up great potential there is something to be said for surviving. You make your way back to the village and re-enter the Tavern. Just a couple of days have passed since you left on your journey - most don’t even realize what horrors you faced. They go about their lives not knowing what dwells in the mountains just outside the Tavern window. You order an ale and sip it slowly … wondering of what might have been, if you had not gone there, and back again.

For escaping the mountains alive... you will receive:
mb Mountains of Madness - Lived to see another day...

The line between reality and fantasy has blurred to the point where Caleb can no longer distinguish it. Visions, thoughts and feelings blend together into a jumbled mess. Perhaps this is all a dream? After all, these horrors can’t be real... can they? Or, just maybe, you are now one of the horrors you sought to defeat. He drops to the floor and starts to babble incomprehensible garbage.

Mir turns and keeps his wits, but the great beast lumbers forward, as if to crush him...

This is a Combat Challenge: TITAN AC 18

This is a special combat. For a 1P game, you roll 4 attacks as usual. For both 1P and 2P games, each player gains a special bonus to these attack rolls equal to the greater of their current HP and SP! You must score two or more successful attacks to defeat the Titan and survive the adventure!

Mir, your bonus seems to be +4 (+3 Sword +1 HP/SP) and now we will see if your 4 attacks hit...

Should there be a bonus from the tome? Not sure how that factors in.

Mir, Dwarf Cleric, HP = 1, SP = 1, Gold = 5
Elvish Longsword (+3), well-worn tunic, some old leather boots, globe (light), Tome of the Ancients
-healing used up-

*steels himself for the greatest challenge he's faced yet* You shall pay for what you did to Caleb, fiend! *casts a prayer to the gods, then begins a fierce attack, focusing on the titan's left hand, attempting to sever it*

Attack #2 1d20+4 = (1) + 4 = 5
Attack #1 1d20+4 = (3) + 4 = 7
Attack #3 1d20+4 = (12) + 4 = 16
Attack #4 1d20+4 = (2) + 4 = 6

Haha! If you must go out, might as well make it on a fantastically spectacular failure! XD I knew I should've left and claimed the "survived" badge, but what would be the fun in running away just to get a badge! =)

Your adventure has concluded, brave adventurer. We want to thank you for playing The Mountains of Madness. Within a few days you will receive all microbadges and geekgold due - please be patient. only 5 hours to go, pushing onward...

Jeyiejayne rolls 1d20+1 = (16) + 1 = 17

Jeyiejayne feels the crushing weight of doom upon him, but he remembers his mother and her kind words, and his father’s hope for the future - onward he struggles, and with each step your load seems to lighten! But for Seron it is too much! The dead, the loss... he suffers 1 SP damage from the madness!

For surviving this diabolical and dangerous swamp you will receive:
mb Mountains of Madness - Desolate Swamp

Chapter 3-6 – The Lizard King
Finally! Just when you thought you could not go further, the ground beneath your feet firms up. You slowly rise from the murky swamp and now stand on dry ground. You’re laboring - but you can’t... you won’t give in!

You come up over a small hill and hear voices ahead. Approaching, you see a group of lizard-men who have gathered around a small fire. You creep closer to spy on their activities. They are cooking some animal which they have recently hunted. You deem it better to avoid them and start to move to the side. Snap! A trap is sprung... you are caught in netting and are hanging upside-down as the lizard-men spring to attention. They surround you. From the back comes a particularly tall, lean and powerful lizard-man who strides forward with purpose. He looks at you and, although it is not his native tongue, he speaks to you in your language.

“Well. A city-dweller! How unique. By the smell, it seems the swamp has taken a liking to you. My name is James. Son of Morris. I am the Lizard King, captain of my people and ruler of this swamp. Why have you come here? To Talk? To Fight?” He laughs low and deep. “I’m fine with either - but be quick about it. I’ve got a serpentine empire to build!”

The choice is yours... you may choose to talk to the Lizard King or engage in combat. If you choose to talk, simply begin your conversation with the Lizard King now (Roleplaying Challenge, roll a d20). If you attack, you can assume the Lizard King is AC14 and you are free to make your four attacks now.

Just wanted to apologize for the last minute running out of steam on our parts to come online and check turns... we had a fun time throughout the adventure. It was my wife's first time doing any D&D, so I was excited we lasted as long as we did.

Thank you so much for taking the time out to run our game Oliver - much appreciated. I hope someone will do the same for you in the next go, so that you can experience it as we did. Thanks again!

Pleafully looks at the GM with a longing face. My die is cocked, do you not see it, the way it landed right there....come on man.

Then he watches his wifes die roll and responds.

Ohhh man, look hers landed all crooked there on mine, this table really needs to be leveled man, let me fix it for you.

**grabs the rulebook and wedges it under a table leg**

There now we are good and straight we should get to reroll.

You move down the passageway as fast as you can. There are triangles etched into the walls and they appear to be blinking at you. You hear movement and rumbling behind you. Something is chasing you! The breathing of a feral creature sounds in your ears, snorting and chomping. The passage starts to twist and turn. The etchings on the wall getting smaller and then larger. You see an angry eye floating in front of you and you stop and blink. You feel the heat of invisible flames burning into your mind. The sounds are all around you now, the breathing and snorting, the eye in front of you, your mind is racing… Eventually you turn and see an open area at the end of the path. You are no longer trapped in the maze, but the harrowing hours spent lost amongst the heat and stone cause you to lose 1 SP.

For surviving the maddening maze MoonWhisperer will receive:
mb Mountains of Madness - Ancient Stone Maze

I just checked and, humorously enough, VShadowheart actually shouldn't have lost a Willpower on the first Wyvern encounter. So the two of you actually swap places when you should have died

Thanks for the honesty! I'll move that MB to where it belongs laugh

Ithy pulls her sword, Indus squaring off against the gnoll. Its baying shriek gives way to a sideways swipe.

The gnoll’s piercing laugh distracts Indus as it clubs him repeatedly, but he does get in one solid strike before fleeing. You suffer 1 HP damage!

Without a thought, Ithayla slashes forward and ends the creature’s laughter forever! You find 1d6+1 = (3) + 1 = 4 gold! (if you are a Rogue, add +2gp)

Chapter 1-4 - Wyvern in the Wind
Finally! You have arrived at the base of the mountains proper. A menacing sight for sure - the mountains look like they go on forever and one could get lost in there for all eternity. Fortunately you still have your father’s maps. They are faded, worn and heavily creased... but still serviceable after all these years. You take out his notes to make sure you’re prepared. As you read, a shadow quickly creeps up across the page. Clouds? You didn’t see any and besides, the shadow moved too fast. You glance up - in the sky overhead is circling the most menacing creature to which you’ve ever borne witness! A WYVERN! A terrible flying lizard who makes its home in the mountains. It circles as if looking for something. You are too afraid to move and too smart to stand still.

Will you stand and face this menacing foe? Is it time to run? Or perhaps you have another trick up your sleeve. How do you respond?

Roleplay Challenge
Please provide a short (no more than 500 words) final response for this roleplay encounter and include any reaction to what has happened. Please provide a d20 roll with your post. The GM may give you a bonus on your roll based on the roleplay exchange. In a 2P game you are free to interact with each other as well as the GM and each player is expected to provide a roleplay response and each will provide a d20 roll with their response. All roleplay challenges will be similar and the game assumes you will remember how to do this in the future.

Quaxos is a follower of the goddess of fortune, Quiana. He accompanies Quirk, an elven thief who stole the cursed artifact, the Dice of Corruption on his quest for penance. He wears her holy symbol, a six-sided die with blue raindrop pips around his neck.

Cleric HP=2, SP=2, Gold=8 Inventory: Sword of Elven Antiquity (+3), bare hairy chest, bare feet.

"Quap..." Quaxos again reluctantly draws his blade. "You're really against the idea of any non-murderous options on this quest, aren't you?"

attack1 1d20 = (15) = 15
attack2 1d20 = (16) = 16
attack3 1d20 = (6) = 6
attack4 1d20 = (10) = 10

EDIT: I forgot the +3 on all my rolls...

shadowcentaur: The salamander’s trident cuts your chest deeply, but you quickly strike back and cut the beast down! You find 1d4 = (3) = 3 gold but suffer 1 HP damage. (if you are a Rogue, add +2gp)

Fate1316: You find 1d4 = (4) = 4 gold but suffer 1 HP damage. (if you are a Rogue, add +2gp)

You are only as old as you feel. How old is soft and squishy?

Try the "Add Item" thing at the bottom of the initial posting.

I'm new to the dice roller. If I edit a comment with dice in it, will the dice stay the same or will they inadvertently re-roll, getting me booted from the game? My typos are already making me crazy.

Thanks,
Tim

Indeed. The rolls, once made, are locked in. They're even recorded for posterity on the original Item post itself -- a safeguard against clever players (or GMs devil ) trying to manipulate the system.

Please don't forget to thumb your GM, to show your appreciation for their time and efforts, for whom without them, this event wouldn't be possible.

Many thanks to you all for helping out.
