Played this at GaryCon IV (2012). Set in 1957 Chicago, I was Bubba Caskill, the motorpool mechanic for the US Artifact Recovery Agency. We stopped the rise of Nyarlathotep after facing zombies, traps, a third party of asian goons, and a dimensional shambler. I took out all of the asian goons solo with a forktruck using my high skill in Operate Heavy Machinery. How often do you get to use that in CoC?

Prelude - The Tavern
The barkeep, Sama, has been busily serving patrons this fine fall day. The harvest festival is nearly upon the town and the locals are getting in their last cozy visits to their favorite watering hole before tourists flourish here and take the place over for a week. You’ve already been mistaken for a harvest-goer by more than a few locals. You look around and see a few friendly faces among the crowd. Perhaps one of them would make a fine adventuring partner on your journey. Then again, it may be best to go this alone. That choice remains yours. In the meantime, one well-dressed halfling patron, who may have had more than his share of ale, comes up to you and offers to play a simple game for a wager. He describes the game as follows:

~ The Barbarian Dice Game ~

“You see, it’s easy. Even a child can play! This game requires us to cast these strangely shaped gaming pieces which the gods call ‘dice’. I’ve got five such pieces, one with four sides, one with six sides, one with eight, one with ten and one with twelve. For some reason, Barbarians are fondest of the 12-sider but I’ve no idea why. Anyway, we roll all five dice each and we compare results. For every like-sided die that you roll higher on, you get a point. Whomever has the most points is the winner. You, fine friend, break all ties. How can you lose?! What do you say? Shall we wager?”

You may decline to play or you can wager 1 or 2 gold. This game is available to both you and your adventuring partner separately if playing in a 2P game. The choice is now yours. If you decide to wager and play, please use the geek-randomizer to roll five separate rolls: 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10 and 1d12.

Level 3-2a - The Lava Field

With the salamander behind you, the tunnel spirals steeply downward. Heat slowly builds – first it feels refreshing after the icy air of the mountains, but soon it reaches a sweltering crescendo, and the sweat pours from your brow.

Then you see a red glow ahead, and after a few more twists and turns the path opens into another enormous cavern – this one full of lava, bubbling and boiling! Most of the floor has disintegrated, but a narrow path remains along the cavern’s side. You begin to cross, but the intense heat exhausts you, and it is difficult to move your feet!

The heat exhausts you, and fall to your knees halfway across the cavern – but your feet slip as well, and your right foot dips into the lava! The lava sears your very soul, and you take 1 HP damage!

The fire, it consumes you!

Those were some exceptionally unlucky rolls there - but there is honor in having the Fates aligned against you!

You have died facing the Mountains of Madness. But let no person doubt your heart and conviction. The mortal shell which you call your body has given out. While the spirit remained willing it cannot do so without help from the flesh and blood which drives it. As light fades to black you think back over your adventure and can’t help but smile. Bravery and valor were yours, dear adventurer. And nothing can take that away.

Your adventure has concluded, brave adventurer. We want to thank you for playing The Mountains of Madness. Within a few days you will receive all microbadges and geekgold due - please be patient. In the meantime, we invite you to kick back at the Tavern of the Falling Leaves for some stories both brave and bold. You can enter the tavern by clicking here. The design team and GMs that brought you this adventure feed off of the stories told in the Tavern - so please feel free to contribute to the post-adventure fun! In addition, we would love for you to rate this adventure - you can do so by visiting the official Mountains of Madness RPG entry and at the bottom you can ‘Add Information’ to give it a rating and comment.

Thank you, hope you enjoy it.

Chapter 3-5 – Mentzer Swamp
When you wake in the morning, the Caravan is gone. They must have risen early to head out. You’re still covered nicely in one of their warm blankets. You eat a light breakfast, pack up and head out. You’re moving through the valley between two towering mountains, and your destiny lies somewhere on that second mountain. At this point you are not even sure how accurate your father’s maps are, but there is no turning back now.

Before long the ground becomes less rocky and more soft and spongy. Each step you take causes your well-worn boots to stick to the ground with a sucking sound as you struggle to lift them and move forward. Soon you’re standing ankle-deep in marshy water. A swamp! Not exactly what you were hoping for on the journey today. You continue to press forward as each step gets heavier and heavier.

From the murky water you see gravestones, half submerged. Was this the site of an old burial ground? You read some of the stones as you walk. “Here lies Fizzle. He burned Bright. He burned Fast. Consumed by the Dungeon of Doom.” You push away the visions of all the dead under your feet as you march onwards.

There it is... that voice inside your head. “Why go on?”. You don’t have a good answer. Why indeed? You look down - several leeches have attached themselves to your leg where your protective clothing has ripped. You don’t even bother to remove them. The salty tepid water burns into the cuts on your feet. The voice in your head again, “DESPAIR!”.

Chapter 3-6 – The Lizard King
Finally! Just when you thought you could not go further, the ground beneath your feet firms up. You slowly rise from the murky swamp and now stand on dry ground. You’re laboring - but you can’t... you won’t give in!

You come up over a small hill and hear voices ahead. Approaching, you see a group of lizard-men who have gathered around a small fire. You creep closer to spy on their activities. They are cooking some animal which they have recently hunted. You deem it better to avoid them and start to move to the side. Snap! A trap is sprung... you are caught in netting and are hanging upside-down as the lizard-men spring to attention. They surround you. From the back comes a particularly tall, lean and powerful lizard-man who strides forward with purpose. He looks at you and, although it is not his native tongue, he speaks to you in your language.

“Well. A city-dweller! How unique. By the smell, it seems the swamp has taken a liking to you. My name is James. Son of Morris. I am the Lizard King, captain of my people and ruler of this swamp. Why have you come here? To Talk? To Fight?” He laughs low and deep. “I’m fine with either - but be quick about it. I’ve got a serpentine empire to build!”

The choice is yours... you may choose to talk to the Lizard King or engage in combat. If you choose to talk, simply begin your conversation with the Lizard King now and include a d20 in your response. If you attack, you can assume the Lizard King is AC14 and you are free to make your four attacks now.

The 2009 edition of my Halloween one-shots was NIGHT Falls in Arkham, inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's story "The Dreams in the Witch House" and the SyFy Channel reality series, Ghost Hunters. So, I finally ran an "official" session (or two) of this game.
