Herbert W. "Herb" Trimpe (May 26, 1939 – April 13, 2015) was an American comic book artist and occasional writer, known for his work on The Incredible Hulk and as the first artist to draw for publication the The X-Men character Wolverine. Born in Peekskill, New York, he attended the School of Visual Arts. Trimpe then enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served for four years, including a year in Vietnam. Upon his discharge from the military in 1966, he learned that fellow SVA classmate John Verpoorten was working at Marvel Comics' production department, and said they were hiring freelance people. He was once hired by Stan Lee as a production assistant.
