Characters in the game do not have any numeric values or statistics, nor even defined Skills or Attributes. Instead, characters are developed only with narrative qualities and this is done during play.
The game proceeds in three Stages - The Sea, The Star, and The Gates - with defined events transpiring in each Stage. A stripped pack of French playing cards is used to determine random events and also to resolved opposed actions. Unlike most games, opposed action resolution uses a simple, unmodified card comparison. This results in a 50/50 chance for any opposed action to succeed. The design intent is to encourage players to seek non-opposed resolution to most, if not all, situations.
