Often considered a satire, the contents of this netbook widely were ridiculed, railed against, or mocked on various pre-World Wide Web computer systems. Nevertheless, it remained the "number one" download on almost every system that hosted it. The "final" version, dated Jan 1, 1996 (which came in two versions with varying content and format) included a summary detailing the controversy. Entirely devoid of graphics, the document today seems rather silly and benign.
Multiple versions of this document exist. Generally, the first widely popular "alpha" version was ASCII text created and compiled by Ole Andreas Ringdal. This version served as the basis for multiple minor variations as readers revised, updated, "corrected", or expanded their own versions and circulated. In 1996 a "standardized" PDF version was created by Alessandro Baldoni. Subsequent common versions reverted to either ASCII text or other then-common formats such as DOC, WP5, or RTF. All these versions circulated on BBS, listserv, ftp, USENET, or early World Wide Web systems. Today, it remains relatively easy to locate multiple versions.
