For Pathfinder, they charge extra for the rules for each of the books - so another $10 per hardback to get all those rules, plus packs that contain the setting-specific rules in the other product lines.

I think I calculated about $120 to get the currently-complete Pathfinder line, at least somewhere in that ballpark.

Looks like $30, plus whatever additional "Books" you want cost.

So, if I was doing Savage Worlds, it would cost me $30+$20 for the 'companion bundle'.

Looks like additional rule sets are about $20 each (plus any supplements)

That gives you Hero Lab and one of the games it supports, then each additional game is purchased as an add-on (for close to the same price, if not the exact same price).

There are incentives for GMs, just like Stefan got. By your definition, then, these are not done by volunteers. And the organization is not built by volunteers, it is built by paid employees of Paizo. There's a ton of groundwork to organize a system like that, who can do it from smaller publishers?

You are complaining that nobody is offering the games you like at GenCon. Because they are not, you assume nobody is playing those games. Instead, fans should be stepping up to run the games that you want to play, at their own expense and trouble, just to spread the word about those games? Sounds like a stretch to me.

Also, your original post complained about Savage Worlds. Does anybody actually consider that an indie game (by any definition)? Who are you really complaining about?

As for whether GenCon is a good target, it's all about competition. Yeah, you have a larger pool to draw from - but you also have a ton more competition for those peoples' attention than at a smaller con. Can you really compete with the splashy booths from WotC, Paizo, Rio Grande, etc.? It's not obvious to me that the answer is "yes".

I usually don't bother writing stories and trying to railroad characters into them. Rather, I come up with a couple of ideas of where I want any given session to start, and the players *always* take it from there.

The last campaign I ran started out as being just some low-level PCs doing for-hire missions off of the local tavern's notice board, but eventually they wound up forming an entire island nation, complete with trade alliances, fortifications, temples, jail, a dance club (yep, that's right) and wizard's tower. Something for everyone!

In episode 25 of Carnagecast, we switch up the format. Mark Edwards comes on the show to talk about the role-playing game of swashbuckling fantasy 7th Sea and the living campaign he runs in the game’s world of Theah, Heroes of Altamira. 7th Sea combines the tropes of swashbuckling adventure movies and European history’s greatest hits with fantasy role-playing. Nimble fencers and sorcerers square off in the palaces and plazas to save the day — or ruin it.

Heroes of Altamira is a living campaign, one in which the actions of players affect future events and characters created in the first episode can, if their players desire, carry on all the way through the twenty-four episode arc. Mark also talks a bit about his philosophy of bringing new players into existing living campaigns and gives a peek ahead to what comes after Heroes of Altamira.

Additionally, discover the truth of DOMINGO GIGANTE!

In most of the games I run the potential to change things in a big way is high. My environments are 100% destructible (Amber PbF players take note).

I enjoy seeing what players do with what's presented to them. I'm surprised nearly as often as they are.

The two things stopping me are knowing that I'd need to spend quite a lot, given my tendency to build characters using lots of different sources (APG, UM, UC, etc.), plus the fact that I'm not in a position to have a laptop with me while gaming because of where and when my gaming sessions are.

I'm thinking many (most?) indie gamers started as non-indie gamers. Theoretically they should be great places to recruit. Perhaps that's not a goal?

A goal of whom? Eric has already said he doesn't mean the company. He means fans. Fans have a goal to have fun, but that's about all they can agree on. If some want to run games at a convention, and can afford to get there to do so, they will. But there won't be any unified goal to do anything like that - fans aren't organized that way.

	Ahhhh ... true.

How much was changed by the NPCs? Well ... in the first example, not much, that mostly played out as planned.

In the second example ... hmmm, things were changed, but mostly the *actors*^changed and not the events. Mostly because I wanted a stable reality for starting of the progeny campaign.

Probably only interesting for Jules, but things that changed (none of them world-shocking I guess) were:
* survival of Doji Shizue
* survival of Toku (way back in the beginning)
* rescue of Kitsuki Kaagi
* Tonbo revival & the Tonbo school
* Falcon remain their own clan (I was going to have them join the Crab)

[o]* Oh, the rewinding of the Moto Coup and the creation of the Khol Wall.
* last but not least: rescue of Rokugan from 1000 Years of Darkness. Up until that final session, I had been keeping my options open. If you guys would have faltered in the escort, I would have had it fail. We'd still have played a second campaign, but one of a different nature :P[/o]

For Stefan to have been paid, he would have had to have been given money to the tune of at least $10-$12/hour (assuming a $6 minimum wage that seems to be common in a number of states, more like $18/hour given the expertise Stefan brings if the minimum wage were $10/hour), in addition to having his expenses paid.

That's like saying you're paid to show up in court and testify if you get a subpoena and your travel and hotel expenses are paid, but unlike an expert witness you don't actually get any money for the specific time. That's just making sure you're not out of pocket.

I'd say it depends on the campaign and the scope of the adventure(s) involved. Usually, though, I tend to massive epic end goals that could affect (or destroy) the world.

In one D&D campaign, the characters were essentially trying to stop a evil, slain god from being reborn. Their success or failure had a massive effect on the campaign world as a whole as it could re-introduce a deity as well as lead to other deity deaths.

In my Deadlands (Original Edition) campaign (which unfortunately ended when several key players moved/stopped being able to play) the final goal of the main villain was to bring about hell on earth (a few years earlier than the standard Deadlands timeline).

Other campaigns have had a smaller focus and scope so there was not the far reaching changes, but on a local level, the PCs were still very important and changed the fabric of the local area, even if someone a few towns away would not have heard of them or their exploits.

[q="Tegarend"][q="Benevolentgamemaster"]I normally run the type of epic stories where PCs start small but end up saving the world and/or becoming major players in it. So I would say: a lot. In Shadowrun, a PC couple (now retired to NPC status) became the Brangelina of the 2070ies, and some of the others have even greater things in store for them...

Oh the fools, how little do they realize! MWAHAHA!

This!

In my first-ever campaign, the PCs began as small adventurers hunting stolen property deeds to a plantation somewhere, then came across the path of a supervillain organization and ended stopping a world-ending ritual (in the meanwhile becoming Lords of several manors etc and foisting plots all over the continent).

In my second-ever campaign, the PCs began as small-time aides to a magistrate and ended by ascending to Godhood after co-thwarting the plans of the Shadowlands to end the Cycle of Life.

My third- and fourth-ever campaigns are still in the small-time stages :P

That's not the answer to the question, though, is it? Your players can become Epic heroes without ever affecting the campaign - they became heroes because that's what you had planned out, i.e. "I have a campaign idea in mind, and while PCs can make small changes to their immediate environs, it probably won't affect the overall campaign". I don't have a point to make about your GM'ing or anything, I just found the original question more interesting :)

After looking around at PCGEN and some fillable XLS and PDF files, I ended up with Hero Lab. It's not super cheap, but it's really well done and kept up-to-date. The Beginner Box version is free... and the demo is nearly fully functional but you can't save or print. They let you install on 2 different machines (primary and secondary license) so I keep it on desktop and laptop (I think iPad will come eventually) and use Dropbox to keep my characters available across both.

-Dave

I was hoping for something that could be accessed from any computer, that stores your info for easy retrieval.

I wouldn't mind having to pay for using the site, I just wanted to avoid loading more stuff onto the laptop.

Either option opens up a plethora of different campaign paths and will have a direct effect on the other when (or if) they choose to follow up on it.

I write my chronicles and campaigns to be tailored for the PCs at hand, so, yes, they have a large impact upon it. The fun part is when I run the "same" chronicle for another group of PCs, because it is then tailored to them, and the whole thing ends up being another story altogether.

by brumcg

The issue of game space is a non-issue. Get your events submitted by the deadline (mid-March this year), you'll get space. Even better, for example, Games on Demand is organized and they get a dedicated room (last year it was in a great location).

Peter Adkison is a HUGE indie game fan; I'd bet he would help. I'm pretty sure I've even heard him talk about the possibility of a dedicated indie vendor space that would greatly reduce the cost to do business. The problems were trying to determine who qualified as an indie vendor and that it probably wasn't the best idea to segregate indie gamers from everyone else.

It takes organization and planning to overcome the logistics of Gen Con. From the publisher side, due to the cost factor as Brad and Steffan have pointed out (and I saw first hand 20 years ago), that's daunting due to having hundreds of designers and probably thousands of games.

If that could be cracked, the reward is having your game potentially exposed to 35k gamers.

Volunteerism, like Eric has said, is another to way to go at things. That seems to be focused on the Games on Demand room. Unfortunately, I've been to the GoD room twice and they weren't offering anything I wanted to play. I'd rather see more specific events in the catalog.

I was not paid, and the IRS agrees with me. (Except for the product as trade bait, but that was too small to declare as income. Heck, my current royalties from SJG are too small to declare as income!) The problem is that most large convention attendees are fans of the big systems. It's primarily their party, and anyone else really feels like they're trying to walk up a crowded down escalator. It's not as much fun as it sounds.

Foolish me. I thought the largest role playing game convention in the world would have some opportunity to try out some of these interesting role playing games. Guess not. Apparently, they don't really get played.

They don't really get played at GenCon or Origins, no. Probably not much, anyway. But that's not really their scene, so I personally am not surprised.

Paizo gets their boatload of volunteer GMs by giving them similar incentives (though not to the level the celebrity creator of Fudge got :) ). See here for a summary of how their system works.

(To address Barad's concern, this kind of organized play can also incorporate quality control based on a GM's past history with the organization.)

Anyway, even at these more limited levels that's a pretty substantial investment for a small company.

I normally run the type of epic stories where PCs start small but end up saving the world and/or becoming major players in it. So I would say: a lot. In Shadowrun, a PC couple (now retired to NPC status) became the Brangelina of the 2070ies, and some of the others have even greater things in store for them...

Oh the fools, how little do they realize! Working with volunteers off course is an option, but in those cases you need to watch at the quality of what they are doing. I myself did demo boardgames from time to time and I always saw a big difference between all off us, I seen even with small games people explaining the games wrong and those are boardgames, those should be easy compared to RPG's!

It is sometimes hard to find good demoërs for boardgames, so it's much harder to find good demo GM's. Hell I think it's hard enough to find any GM whatsoever, look at all the people standing in line here at the geek at the play by forum. Now I know that I would GM something at a con like that, I woudn't mind. But what would I do? I would stick to the games I know through and through and I think that for most people will always be the same games.

Thread: Game Masters:: GM Question #117: How much do your PCs affect your campaign world as a whole?

by MasterGeek

I've always generally been a "I have a campaign idea in mind, and while PCs can make small changes to their immediate environs, it probably won't affect the overall campaign" kind of GM.

However, more recently I've tried to create a "living world" with the Pathfinder campaign world I've created. Each decision my players make will have a butterfly effect of consequences on the world as a whole. Between the three campaigns (two here on PbF and one F2F) set in this world, actions by all three groups will affect the world and the campaigns of the other two groups, possibly changing the route each campaign takes as a whole.

For example (for those of you in my PbFs, potential minor spoilers, but nothing gamekilling for your current situations):

[o]In last night's session, the PCs came across undead for the first time in hundreds (or thousands) of years. They fought some and stumbled across a certain object. The rogue rolled horrendously on an appraisal check and said that the item was essentially worthless (even though it was healing the undead each round). The PCs opted to destroy it. The result of this was that the rest of the undead in the dungeon dropped. They walked through to the end of the dungeon to find the book they were searching for and came across a man who they discovered to be the creator of these undead (and was trapped down here for the hundreds of years since undead were last seen). By destroying this item they defeated the undead, but the item was also what was keeping the man trapped in the dungeon so instead of fighting and defeating him, he escaped.

Now there is the potential for a return of undead to the world as a whole, where prior to the session none existed. If they had not destroyed the item and fought the man, there would be no return of the undead as he was the only one capable of creating them (or at least, a return of undead would have been avoided for much much longer). And all this because they opted to destroy something.[/o]

OK, that's an extremely long story, for which I apologize. To sum up, because of an action the PCs chose to take (which I really hadn't forseen them doing), the campaign world as a whole is possibly forever altered, and they loved that they have the potential to have such an effect on the world around them.

We started with about 40 entrants, each of whom had to write one review every 2 weeks in 2011. Once 2012 hit, we were down to 11 people and have to write one review per week for the year. Once 2013 arrives, it will be one review per day.

Just to clarify, by running 2 PCs I mean running 1 for each adventure, so there is no confusion for the GM as to which PC is acting when he calls for actions.

It is not cheap to run games at a convention. For ten years, one company or another paid for me to run games at the two big conventions in the US each year (Origins, GenCon) and at some smaller ones.

To do this, they paid:

* My round-trip air fare.
* My hotel bill for four nights.
* A per diem food allowance.
* My badge fee.
* Some product as "trade bait".

In return, they got four days of my GMing. This came to 14 two-hour demo games (four each Thurs-Sat and two on Sunday).

I like to think I ran good games, but still: that's a lot of money to have to pay to get your game out there.

Speaking of which, does your SO have an account on here? If not, will he be getting one so he can join in? I admit, I much prefer each character having their own account.

That total brings us to 7. If I can get one more player, then I can run two tables of four. Otherwise, I'll have to do a raffle to see who gets in to the game.

FYI: I'm going to run Into the Shadowhaunt, as it will allow for a quick one-shot; and should be over in a month or two.
The big publishers take up most of the space there and when you are a small compagny you can only hope to afford a small booth somewhere in one of the back halls (my favorite halls to be honest) and you get 1 table of your game going, to be honest they can change quicker with boardgames but it's the same thing, as a player you must be lucky to find the table free.

RPG's, been there twice and never see anyone play an rpg though. For me it was always the best place to get my hands on rpg's, other places there is much much less.

You're right, that is a drawback of BRP, but I'd say given the high level of customisation desired, it's not really a problem. Since he also wants a detailed setting, getting a full 200+ pages dedicated to the setting in addition to all the rules hits the spot a bit more than just getting a 250 page rulebook with system and setting in one.

I didn't remember about the $1 for Legend, but now that you mention it, it's almost the best suggestion. Sink $2 in for the PDFs, if it hits the spot, only $2 and easy to supply all the other players with materials if you want hard copies, if there's something wrong with it, $2 to find that out and come back with some very specific questions to get much more detailed recommendations.

I just did some digging to find the links.

http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/index.php?&manufacturers_id=40...

That's a ton of stuff, each for $1. If Glorantha is at all appealing, it's a very detailed setting with a lot of races.

But it seems to be the exact opposite of what you are asking for.

Rolemaster is quite a mechanically heavy system with overlapping rules and alternate rules for a lot of things.

Then i was totally wrong about that. That's not what i want, i want kind of Rolemaster rules, with all the options detailed on the book. But not heavy math.

Sorry about that.

Check out HARP, its a lightened up Rolemaster.

Yep. Or again, BRP. I don't mean to be flogging it overly, but each time you explain what you want, I keep going back to it. BRP and RoleMaster both come from an era when all RPG systems were mostly the same, so, BRP, HARP, Legend, Harn... they're all going to be pretty much the same and pretty much what you're used to. You know you like it, so that's really your safest bet. The reason I suggest BRP is thanks to Call of Cthulhu it's one of the most popular systems around,

The problem I have with BRP is that the Gold Brick is a bit of a toolkit and offers lots of different optional rules and no setting. For someone who is pretty new that can be a little daunting.

So maybe I would go for OpenQuest to begin with.

Legend would also work, but there is a bit more for the GM to get their head around - it is still not difficult and is in essence the same system. Combat is the main difference and maybe the OP would like the combat manoeuvre part of the game. At least Legend is dirt cheap, $1 in PDF, so it won't break the bank to look at it. I would also recommend the Vikings supplement which is also $1 in PDF (if you get it from the Design Mechanism and not Vikings of Legend - they are pretty much identical).
All you need to say is the system is like CoC/RuneQuest/anything old school, and at the very least there won't be the "I don't want to learn a new system" objection as any rules differences might as well just be house rules.

They're generally zero prep and all about just telling a good story and not about moving minis around, or building a character, or monster stats. They also tend to get the creative juices flowing. Fiasco, The Shab Al-Hiri Roach, A Penny for My Thoughts, and Montsegur 1244 are all great games, though with very different styles. They're all designed for one-shot, pick-up and play, gaming. Of all of them, Fiasco is the most "generic" (since the playset you choose determines the setting). All of these games are also a single purchase, reasonably priced, and available in either PDF or soft cover.

Primetime Adventures (1st & 2nd Editions) is another low prep, story-focused, simple mechanics game that works great with groups who want something focused more on the story and less on the character sheet. It's also a great game for an ongoing "campaign" that doesn't require a lot of prep work. You can use virtually any setting as the basis of your program.

Lady Blackbird is a fantastic, free RPG with simple rules and a great set-up. The only down side is that you ideally need at least 4 people to get the most mileage out the game (I love it with 6: 5 + GM).

That was a great rant and I approve.

Also, fly out to the Lost Coast and I will run any indie game I have for you and maybe some I don't have. We have good beer, redwoods, and lots of fog; AND they filmed the foresty parts of both Return of the Jedi and E.T. a few miles from my house. We were also ground zero for yesterday's eclipse, so bring your Tardis. You would barely be able to see it, due to the fog, but it was still pretty cool.

Edit: please add a WHY U NO graphic for maximum effect.

by TheEduhater

As a player I once had a GM take our Marvel Super Heroes into D&D . We liked him enough to let it slide, but "surprise it's D&D" doesn't work. We would have gladly rolled up D&D characters, but the unexpected switch of style, abilities and goals didn't work.

As a GM, I was arrogant enough to think I could do it and I devised an April fool's plan for my regular group.

I was running Hollow Earth Expedition and my characters were inside the Earth. They showed up for our regular session to find a pile of filled out character sheets for OG: Unearthed Edition. They played the first half of our session as the Cavemen of Hollow Earth in the OG system. It was a simple mission that had their Caveman Tribe making the water in the river come back, fight the lizard men, break down the damn they had built.

The second half of the session they played their normal characters, who were about to be sold as livestock to cannibals. Right at the climax of the inevitable battle a rumbling came from up the dried river bed and WHOOSH, the river, that their Cavemen had restored, came rushing as a sign from the gods.
