Listen, this is no set of rules. I'm not tellin' you what to do, all I'm saying is I'm bringin' up three things that are, like, so important to the whole world, I don't happen to find much importance in.

I own v5, and played it quite a bit in the mid-nineties. When the d20 version came out, I picked it up, along with the Nocturnum campaign, but haven't even read the books, yet.

Now, I'm starting to accumulate some folks I could play with, and I'm wondering: is the d20 version worth playing, or should I stick to v5? I like the streamlining that d20 brings with it, in general, but I'm wondering why v1-6 has so much activity on RPGG while there's next to nothing for the d20 version...

Well for one thing, Call of Cthulhu license that Wizards of the Coast obtained from Chaosium for the d20 edition expired, and the game is now solely a BRP System game (again). Only a handful of d20-based supplements were ever released for CoC.

Also, CoC D20, characters advance like D20 characters, so as they advance levels, they can start taking on more powerful beings head to head. While yes, they will eventually go insane, in the Choasium versions, character could still die from a bullet wound, where in D20, by 5th level, they can shrug off bullet wounds.
I have played both, the D20 as characters advance becomes more pulp than Lovecraft

For interests sake, there was a time when the d20 CoC sold easily for $100 on eBay, but now it's back down to MSRP if not less. Not sure what caused the spike in prices, but it probably won't come back.
