An idea for creating characters that start with ECL and HD.

Normally, the XP-needed-to-level is 1000 times your current level. Also, ECL and racial HD both normally count as just other sources of levels, which must be earned as normal. Instead, I'm pondering this: Your XP needed to level is (ECL + racial bonus HD + current level) x 1000. Mathematically, it's similar.

On one hand, this completely divorces 'level' as a measure of experience from your character's power. If you have a level 1 character, you can be fairly certain their abilities do not exceed a certain level whether they are human, dragon, goblin, medusa, vampire, or sentient puddle of nanogoo.

On the other hand, you'll see a quick distinction in play. That level 1 dragon who needs 12,000XP at level 1 or so will still be earning experience at that schedule while his human companions are earning it at the level 4 or 5 schedule. Games with broad differences in initial power will also see broad differences in character advancement!

(Regardless, the original rule - ECL and HD count as character levels - should be used for one-shots.)
