Session slot #3 at IndieCon involved a three-person game of A Penny for My Thoughts. Since it was the first time two out of the three of us had played Penny we opted for the standard set-up & set of questions. After filling out the memory triggers we were ready to go. What follows are the memory triggers and stories for my character:
First Round of Memory Triggers I was the first one to go and I pulled "The sound of a cuckoo clock." The guiding questions revealed that the memory was of myself and my wife hanging a cuckoo clock I had inherited from my grandmother. The resulting story involved the two of us hanging the clock in our first house late one evening when the clock went off, startling my wife who fell backwards off the ladder. The two of us had a good laugh over the fact that she would have probably the first person to ever have been killed by a cuckoo clock. This was my "happy" memory.
Second Round of Memory Triggers The second memory trigger I pulled was "Riding in a sports car, the wind rushing in my hair." The guiding questions revealed a memory from my teenage days in which I had "borrowed" my dad's Porsche 911 to impress a cheerleader and gotten in to an accident with a truck full of illegal Mexican immigrants. The end result was my father backhanding me and then refusing to pay for me to college. This was my "unhappy" memory.
Third Round of Memory Triggers The third memory trigger I pulled was "Stairway to Heaven playing on the radio." The guiding questions revealed that I was in a car with my wife, driving back from my father's funeral. The two of us were arguing about the fact that I had inherited my dad's company and was expected to take it over, despite the fact that he had all but ignored me since the car accident when I was 16 and that I had no interest in his business. My wife was yelling at me that I owed her after her years of supporting us. We started across a bridge, but while we argued I drifted out of my lane and started to drive towards a set of headlights coming towards us. Whether this was intentional or not wasn't entirely clear but I suggested that it was. My wife screamed and jerked the wheel, the result of which was the two of us plunging off the bridge. I pulled her free from the car just before it sank below the icy waters. This was the memory that proceeded my amnesia and thus was the cause of the memory loss.
Thoughts The story generated was incredibly organic. Even though I did nothing to actively link the three memories, they ended up creating a wonderful string of linked memories that built as the session progressed. I was really surprised at where my story went as well - I just didn't see the car accident and near death experience coming until the very end which was really cool because it resulted in a "found" quality to the memory which seemed pretty authentic. What was also interesting was the fact that the three of us playing ended up with very different stories: One player ended up with a story which was about discovering his mother's secret life and the identity of his real father. The other had a series of very odd experiences with animals (getting stung by a wasp, seeing his dog get hit by a car & then having his mom decide to freeze the dog in the family deep freezer, and being lost in a cave after startling bats) - all three felt "real" but with varying tones. In the end I really enjoyed the game and can't wait to play again.

We played A Penny for My Thoughts last month and had a blast with five of us! I have the notes from the session but just haven't found the time yet with other RPG Geek tasks to write them up for a report here (and I've been clamoring for more session reports, comments and reviews so I am a bit hypocritical!).
Thanks for sharing MJ. Makes me want to get this to the table again soon.
