Why is starting favor printed on the sheet and given a permanent spot?
I understand it being there as this game is often done as a one-shot, but why is it printed on the sheet? Is favor intended to carry over from session to session? If it is carried over, why do I always need to be reminded I started with 6 essence? Perhaps it's not carried over, and I always start with 6...

Unsure what you mean here.
Starting favor is the Maid's affection score x2. On the character sheet in the rulebook it is not set at a permanent level, but has a spot for you to keep track of Favor lost and gained during the game (and campaign if you are doing a series).
Is this a character sheet you got for a website?

This is the blank character sheet in the book.
There seems to be a spot in parenthesis specifically for "starting Favor" similar to the spot for "Spirit." "6" is just an example. I assume starting favor is written in the () and current favor is kept track of in the huge box.
I'm just wondering why I ever will need to know my starting favor ever again. Is the () for current favor and the box for... extra space? Perhaps it's just an odd design choice. I thought maybe I was misunderstanding how favor worked. To me, something like starting Favor belongs in the rulebook in character creation and not on the character sheet. Why should I have a number I'll never reference again or a formula I'll only reference once? This is what led me to think that starting favor had some effect after character creation.
Is that clear yet? I'm sleepy and rambling

Yeah, that makes more sense. I make the assumption that if you keep a character over several games, your favor would start out at the beginning level during each game. Now, this would suck if you had zero favor from the beginning (start working on that one quickly), but you are more likely to use favor if you know it is going ot reset at the start of each session, which helps bring those random moments into the light as the players use their pull with the master.

I was considering a houserule so that Attribute gains operated outside of Favor. But, now I think I can handle it if Favor resets. Since you can't "save up," favor until you get 60 to move that 5 up to a 6, you might as well spend it on fun stuff.
