I was recommended this product as a first time RPG entry point, but I am wary about having to buy maps, or such stuff to track combat. From what I read, the map included is of the overall world, so how does one track combat?

In my head

When I ran Dragon Age we did all combat through storytelling. No map, no minis, just me describing the scene and the players describing their actions. I hadn't done that in quite a long time (since AD&D 2nd edition) but it was a great break from the modern tactical combat systems of 4e D&D.
The boxed set does include simple rules for using a grid or ruler/tape measure and miniatures but you don't have to use these at all. If you are so inclined then I suggest either Gaming Paper or a Paizo Flip Mat (couldn't find a link to them, cheap double sided battle mats you can use wet or dry erase markers on, they are under $15). If you dig using the map or are going to use it for other games then you can pick up a Chessex Matt or something a little more sturdy.
