When I now saw this Coppelius, the frightful and terrific thought took possession of my soul, that indeed no one but he could be the Sandman.

The Shrine in the forest

Players:
Snorri, a Dwarven journeyman runesmith
Ronny, a Human priest of Morr
Arwen, an Elf journeyman bright wizard
Alex, a Human hedgecraft master
Odo, a blind Human priest of Ulric

Had an extra player this time. I knew I'd have an NPC tag along with the players and Karim, a friend of mine had spare time and jumped in to play Odo.

They get up and during breakfast they decide to ask around for news. The innkeeper informs them about a group of three, searching for some guys that solved a murder. They where last seen in the Ostwald district. Alex thinks about looking for them but the group quickly informs him what three witch hunters might do with a hedgecraft master if they discover he is using magic.

Arwen decides to visit the pawn shop again. The group sold the blowpipe they recovered from the assassin and he wants it back. The match between the Reikland Raiders and the Middenheim Maulers is getting closer and he has to prepare for his assassination. The shop owner informs him he sold it already. Apparently Richard Groendyck, a well known and rich merchant from Marienburg bought it. So Arwen returns empty handed.

They set off through the north gate, avoiding the south part of town where the witch hunters were last seen. They leave the road and help Odo through the trees following his directions. A day of walking passes and they set up camp. Alex charms the cutest white rabbit he's ever seen and Ronny quickly whacks it for dinner. Snorri and Arwen keep watch at night.

Next morning they continue their journey. After a few hours they reach an opening in the woods and see the herdstone Father Odo mentioned from his vision. They check it out from a distance. There are runes on the stone but it's not clear which ones. Certainly not Dwarven of Elven. There are also lots of bones near the stone. It's also guarded by a minotaur. The group discusses how to continue. Arwen and Alex work together to create a poisoned arrow. Arwen shoots and misses the minotaur who notices the arrow flying by. The minotaur lets out a big roar and charges the group. Father Odo quickly blesses Ronny and Snorri. Arwen shoots fireballs as the minotaur charges. The blessings work and the players fight the minotaur in a group. Snorri drops the minotaur to the ground with a hard blow and Alex (who did little but defensive stance during combat) finished the minotaur (a fact he kept bragging about throughout the session). (GM note: they where pretty lucky here. The minotaur would've received help a few rounds of combat later.)

They search the mount and base of the herdstone after the fight. Between the remains they discover a tunnel leading below the stone and a door at the end of the tunnel. The door has the sign of Khorne and they hesitate. But Odo senses that the artifact is within and reminds them that they promised to retrieve it. So they open the door carefully and check for traps. After a few meters they get at a T junction. The walls are full of images of war and skeletons. For some reason Arwen simply walks to the right side, right into a trap: spears flying out of the wall, pinning him. After the others help him out they see that there are no other doors in the corridor so they start looking for hidden ones. Arwen finds one near the spear trap. It opens into another corridor.

They arrive at another junction. They can see a room in front with some kind of fountain. There is a corridor leading of to the left and another to right of them. Just when they step into the junction two bloodcursed appear the end of each corridor. Ronny and Alex charge on one side while the others start a fight with the bloodcursed coming from the other side. The bloodcursed have a special attack which can't be parried so they are taking a few hits before they can finish them. That leaves them standing in front of the room with the fountain. As Ronny steps inside, the top of the fountain starts spinning pouring blood all over the room. Ronny starts hitting the fountain to destroy it and is covered in blood. The blood appears to be poisonous and Ronny is taking damage, yelling at the others to help him. They just stay where they are. It takes a few rounds before Ronny is able to destroy the fountain. They have no problem finding the next secret door leading them to the next room.

This room has a throne of bones and a statue of Khorne sitting in the throne.
There are heaps of bones next to the throne and the players freak out a little when the bones start moving. They are quite happy that these turn out to be regular skeletons. 6 of them. Ronny and Snorri charge the skeletons to one side. All skeletons converge to one point of combat and Ronny and Snorri are surrounded. Alex has a charm protecting him from undead and he uses it to break the circle of skeletons around Snorri and Ronni. When they finish off the skeletons two doors open up. Entering the first door then end up in some kind of trophy room. They search the room for anything of value. Odo is feeling around is discovers a hammer in three pieces. Snorri and Alex immediately walk up. Snorri is able to determine this hammer belonged to the dwarf kings of the Black Mountains and he wants to bring it back. Odo understands what the hammer means to the dwarf and gives him his part. Alex wants something back in return and they decide to make a pact. The others find some artifacts as well: a helmet of Graf Manfred von Torrlichelm and a banner of the Knights of the White Wolf.

There is only one room left. When they enter this they see a black sarcophagus standing in a pool of blood. Odo confirms that the skull is inside the sarcophagus. They expect a champion of Khorne in it and hesitate a little. In the end Ronny steps up and tried to move the top. He has to stand in the blood to do this though and is taking damage, unable to remove the heavy lid. He gets back out of the pool of blood. Alex decides to get the "crap from the other room" and throw it in the pool creating a bridge between the floor and the sarcophagus. Together they are able to move the lid and inside they see the champion of Khorne. They expect him to rise but it looks like he's just dead and doesn't move at all. He still has the skull around his neck and Arwen takes it from him. It feels heavier than it should. The players show their greed and Ronny takes the sword while Snorri takes the golden helmet of the champion. (I have to say I was surprised. But it sounds like I can have fun with this in the future). Now they only have to get back to Middenheim to finish their quest.
