For what it's worth:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/10/arts/video-games/dungeons-...

Based on some of the article, I'd say the author (and maybe Hasbro) has never heard of a company called Paizo...

The company (WotC) does not release sales figures, but analysts and gaming experts agree that sales of the game, and all tabletop role-playing ones, have been dwindling for years. Ryan Scott Dancey, chief executive of the game company Goblinworks and a former vice president at Wizards of the Coast, said the overall market peaked between 1999 and 2003 and has been in steady decline since 2005. "My instincts are it’s slower than ever," he said. (NYT)

I've kind of had a feeling that 4E has tanked badly as a publishing venture. I don't think the same can be said for Pathfinder however...

There is certainly, no doubt, a good chunk of the Pathfinder crowd who have gone that way instead of 4E. But what I think a lot of people miss when analyzing it is that I don't think Paizo's apparent growth and success are just because of 4E haters.

Rather, it's because they SUPPORT their product. Consider that they put out TWO Adventure Paths a year. That's 12 campaign books which are very well done and contain a wealth of material. They put out big sourcebooks which still connect to the core rules. They are building a CONSISTENT WORLD. This one is huge. Golarion continues to develop and the resources they put out all interact. They make tons of good flavor aids: all the Gamemastery stuff, maps, cards, etc. The Beginner Box was a brilliant piece of work. They're launching a great new minis line and publishing more of the Beginner Box type standup tokens.

In 4E, which I didn't intrinsically object to in any way; we enjoyed the game-- we played Keep on the Shadowfell and part of the next one, Thunderspire. When we ditched 4E to go to Pathfinder, the Adventure Paths (we're doing Serpent's Skull) are just so much better written. They're adventures that have a storyline that goes somewhere, in a world that is constantly evolving. The D&D modules just seemed not to fit into any larger whole.

We got (back) into roleplaying with 4E and I didn't really have any problems with the system itself. But the support and resources just weren't compelling. Perhaps that's because Wizards didn't really know where D&D was going. It's too bad. I wish them well in a new version but I'm already investing big in something else now.

This. Between the simplified Beginner's Box and the support, I feel like I can play Pathfinder and not worry about designing a ton of stuff. They do that for me so I can focus on playing with my boy.
