With Christmas out of the way, we were finally able to resume our campaign - some nine weeks after the last session. Christmas and the summer holidays really do interfere with our D&D.

During the night, Geran and Drakult had received visions from their gods (Pelor and Heironeous) about what horrible futures were in store for the world if they were unable to stop some of the threats in the Lost City. Of particular note was Geran's, who saw the infected water of the city making its way into the desert around and causing great madness.

The oklu - the lizardfolk of the city - that the group talked to were particularly unhelpful in telling the group where the water supply was, and the group was split over whether to try to purify the water or to chase Archibald. However, from their information, both were likely to the west. So, back into the sewers the group went, and they travelled through the fragmented passages that were their main way of moving through the ruined city.

The group went mostly in a downward direction, and finally discovered a great tunnel that was not part of the sewer system, running in a westward direction. It terminated at a great door that could only be opened by some magical key - a disk of some sort. The group realised that they already had one-third of that key, found in the library, but more parts would have to be found before they passed through the door.

At this point, Geran noticed a shadowy form following the group; our heroes went back to investigate and discovered Archibald, Gromley and four mercenaries fleeing from them. They gave chase, and eventually found their six foes confronting them in a slightly wider part of the sewer system. Parleying was not fruitful, so Geran used his ring to create an illusion of a dragon. Archibald and Gromley escaped in the confusion, but the four mercenaries slipped into a pool of oil they'd intended to use as a trap for the party. Their torches ignited the oil, and that was that!

After the smoke cleared, Archibald was gone, so the group made their way back to an intersection in the sewers, and took the higher path back westward. This indeed led them to the Waterworks, and there they observed oklu and sand giants – not the spectral sort that they’d seen earlier – taking water from fountains. One percussion of giants was watering some gorgons they’d captured in the desert above, but it was obvious they were not aware of the properties of the water: the gorgons grew swiftly enraged and began attacking all around: the giants and the oklu alike. Our heroes strove to protect the oklu, and soon found both giants and gorgons attacking them! Great blasts of fire that remained on the battlefield were hurled by the giants, and although Kurgan was immune to the fire, the others weren’t and mostly ran towards the giants and into melee range. Two gorgons engaged the characters, one attacked the oklu, and the fourth attacked a giant, keeping it out of the combat for a while.

Riardon, who had run between the buildings instead of towards the giants, managed to surprise the giants and used his psionics to disorientate them further. Although the gorgons were problematic for the heroes, they were even more so for the giants… with one giant actually being petrified by the gorgon’s breath!

When the battle was over – the giants and gorgons dead (or petrified) – the group were thanked by the oklu, although not all of them had survived the attack. The oklu told the heroes that access to the water supply beneath this part of the city was possible, but the ghost of the giant water master would be the personage they needed to ask for such details.

There was one problem with this approach: the giant’s ghost was somewhat unstable. Fi crept in first to understand how troublesome it would be, and then Maximilian and Geran negotiated with the giant – a perilous affair, with the ghost being extremely unstable and prone to wild swings of mood. However, they were eventually able to gain his aid by promising to find his body – somewhere in the depths of the water pipes, and they were told how to reach that area.

With a new quest gained, we ended the session; next session will see the heroes descending into the waterworks proper, and will likely (hopefully) contain more action.
