The opening of our story finds you each in the city of Fallcrest, one of the brighter and longer lasting points of light in the dark wilderness of Nentir Vale. Points of light like Fallcrest are only kept alight by effort and vigilance to keep back the forces of barbarism and darkness that threaten to douse them.

There have been various rumours around town recently of increased bandit activity on the King's Road, which runs between Fallcrest and the northern frontier outpost of Winterhaven. Other than that, life around Fallcrest has been slow, at least on the surface. And it's been raining.

This evening, you're inside somewhere relatively dry when a halfling messenger in a tattered oilskin enters. He takes out a sheet of rough paper that he has clearly taken pains to keep dry, reads over part of it, scans the room and locks on to you. Then he tramps over, weaving around other people and furniture in the room and hands you the note.

Along with a description of you, and a greeting to you by name are the following lines:

I have heard tales of your heroism and wish to employ
your services. Adventure awaits in the borderlands! The
Lord Warden of Fallcrest has authorized me to pay well
for your time and effort.

If this offer intrigues you, look for me in the fields west
of Fallcrest tomorrow morning. Simply take the western
ferry across the river and walk to the outskirts of town.

You will find me there.

With respect and regards,
Captain Nathan Faringray of the Fallcrest Guard

The halfling coughs discreetly and holds out a palm

So, what do you do? There's a handy list of Fallcrest locations along with a map of the town, if you'd like to decide where you are when the letter finds you. The Nentir Inn and the Silver Unicorn are places to stay, or there are various tap rooms, but perhaps you're avoiding the usual cliches.

You each have 10 gold pieces to your name (of which a few silver, or tenths of a gold would be a generous tip for a messenger). That is enough to live comfortably for a matter of days. However, requests for your service, backed by the Lord Warden, don't come every day. That said, you're not forced to take this job if you think you'd rather not. I can work with a decision like that.

By the way, what are the tales of your heroism that Faringray might have heard of?

Finally, to give you a bit of a sense of your place in the world, here's a map of the surrounding area. There's more to the world of that, of course, but what most people know about it is based on hearsay and legends, even more so than what they know about the Vale. You might know more about certain parts beyond the border of the Vale, but even your knowledge is much less than comprehensive.

Don't hesitate to ask questions over at the OOC thread.

Thanks for joining and away we go!

BACKGROUND

My name is Alexander O'Connor, human wizard, 24 years of age. I was born in a small farming village about five days travel from Fallcrest. My parents were farmers, but I never knew them. I understand that my mother died in childbirth, and my father a few years later from acute pneumonia. I was raised by my grandfather who came to live on the farm after the death of my father. The farm was fairly small; just a few cows and goats and a couple of fields. My grandfather tended to the animals, and I assisted him when I grew up.

My grandfather had an aptitude for wizardry, and dabbled a little in useful magics around the house. When I was old enough he taught me to read, and gave me some of his old books to study. That way I learned the beginnings of magic. I was much more interested in these studies than in a farming career. I was always on the lookout for more books to learn from, but they were hard to get hold of. Still, I built up a small collection of useful tomes, but what I was really looking for was an accomplished wizard who could be my mentor. Unfortunately, my grandfather grew old and frail, and I became responsible for tending to the farm, and was therefore unable to leave home for longer stretches of time.

Recently, my grandfather passed away. While this was a sad experience, it meant I was now free to choose my own path. I sold the remaining livestock, and most of the fields, to a neighboring farmer. I kept the farmhouse, as a place to call home, and to store my small library. I left the keys to the farmhouse with the neighbor, who promised to keep an eye on my small property, and left town for my first long trip.

After traveling for a week, I came to Fallcrest. As this was the first slightly bigger town that I had encountered, I decided to stick around for a while to explore the surrounding areas. I still had most of the money that I received for selling the animals, but I realized that it would run out at some point. I settled in a cheap but clean place called the Nentir Inn.

Currently, my goals are threefold: (1) in the short term: find a way to earn some money to expand my funds; (2) in the medium term: visit some large cities and explore their libraries; (3) in the long term: find a powerful wizard who is willing to be my mentor for a while.

Some initial questioning reveals the names of several wizards of note in the town:

Chase, a tiefling wizard who has a lab somewhere in the lower reaches of the city.
Daloss, a spellcaster who runs a bookshop and apothecary in the upper section. He is an eladrin, a race of elves who hail from the Land of Faerie, also known as the Feywild.
Mathos, an elderly human who has erected a small tower on the property he owns in the upper section.

Alexander O'Connor -- Human Wizard

I started this day with a hearty breakfast in the inn, whilst paging through my spellbook -- the only book I brought with me on my travels. It contains so much information that I have not been able to decipher yet. For now, apart from the first few pages, the book is shrouded in mystery. But I am eager to learn more, and on my travels I should have plenty of opportunities to do that.

After breakfast I set aside a little time in my room to study one of the spells -- the sleep spell in this case. It is one of the more complicated spells in the book, and I seem to be able to only remember one of those at a time. I don't know if I need to use it, but practice makes perfect, so I will probably fire it off at a bunch of rabbits before the day runs out.

In the afternoon I explored Fallcrest, and learned that several reasonably accomplished wizards are living in town. It might be a good idea to follow up on that information. I do not intend to approach them immediately -- first I want to learn a little bit more about them, see where their interests lie, and what I could expect if I bring up the subject of an apprenticeship. But I am in no rush. This is the biggest city I have ever visited, and I am young enough to take my time.

Now it is night, I have enjoyed dinner, and now I am nursing a drink in the corner of the Nentir Inn taproom. My eyes examine the place, taking in the visitors. I am by myself, nobody seeks my company, but I am fine being alone with my thoughts.

Then a halfling approaches me. He hands me a letter, with a job offer. My name is at the top, and it describes me in some details. It refers to my "heroic deeds". What could that be about? In the past years I sometimes used my magic to scare off wild beasts that a farming village always has to contend with. I even killed a bear once. But it is not like I have been bragging about such acts while in Fallcrest, and I don't see how this Captain Faringray could have learned about them.

Wait a minute? Is this some kind of scam? I address the halfling: "Now look here, friend. I know I look the part of the farm boy, and this is my first visit to Fallcrest, but you are not taking me in so easily. Yes, this letter addresses me by name, but you could have written that in yourself. Maybe you got it from the innkeeper. And a description of me is easy to give simply by observing me. Are you trying to get an easy tip? Or even worse, are some buddies of you waiting for me just outside town? I do not intend to get robbed, thank you very much. You have to seek a different victim tonight."

The halfling withdraws and pockets his hand. He sucks his teeth, considering. Then he speaks, not taking his eyes from you.

"Bethani," he calls. One of the servers, a young but tired-looking human, looks up from the table she's clearing and smiles. "My usual hot drink please. It's been a cold time, running these letters around for the Captain." The server bustles off, and the halfling takes a seat at Alexander's table. Like most furniture in a world populated by paying customers of different sizes and body types, the chairs and table somehow manage to accommodate both of you comfortably.

"Honestly, this isn't any of my business. But you're right: I did take you for a hayseed and I already know this is your first visit to Fallcrest. It's not that big a town, which means a new face sticks out, unless it stays by the docks. It also means that word travels fast. You've been asking about the spellcasters in town. Paranoid lot, spellcasters, present company not excepted. Maybe one'a them heard you'd come looking for them, and decided to see if they could send you packing. Could be they're testing you, seeing if you're just out for a quick gold, or seeing if you have the... 'community mindedness,' let's say, to lend a hand to the town. Or maybe the test is to see if you'll be distracted from your goal of finding them." The server arrives with a steaming mug for the messenger. "Ah, thanks, love. Put it on my tab, would you?"

The woman winks at the halfling, then gives Alexander a suspicious once-over before sweeping off. But the halfling catches her arm. "Treat this one right, Betha. He's a big tipper." She scans you again, with a different expression on her face, then returns to her work.

"Or, maybe they're hoping you'll be sent off on some damnfool quest and trouble them no more. I don't know. Inscrutable lot, wizards. Cheers." He drains the mug, and stands to go. "Follow to the note to find out. Or not. It's nothing to me, at this point. Well, I need to be off. More deliveries. Best to you."

It has been difficult to get a word in by way of response to all this, but as he's leaving you can say something.

(Conversations can be difficult in PBF, as line-by-line would take forever, and misunderstandings are likely. In case I wasn't clear, he's established himself as a member in relatively good standing at the Nentir Inn, if not the rest of the city. Make of that what you will.)

Thromgood Stormhammer - Dwarf Fighter

The name's Thromgood Stormhammer. I fight for the honor of my clan, most of whom were slain when our stronghold in the Dawnforge mountains was overun by Bloodspear Orcs 80 years ago. They stripped us of our wealth, our dignity, and our home. A few of the remaining Stormhammers moved west to Hammerfast, but a small band of us committed ourselves to running down the Bloodspear Orcs, and anyone else behind this unforgivable act, and wiping them out of the Nentir Vale forever.

I do not forget, I do not forgive, and I do not show mercy. RAISE A PINT! RAISE THE HAMMER! TO VICTORY!

Unfortunately, I just learned that my last remaining shield brother, Aldrik Stormhammer, met Moradin while battling Blood Orcs in the borderlands to the north. I now find myself alone on this journey. It's painful enough to lose one's shield brother, but Aldrik was carrying my father's battle axe. I fear it is now lost forever as well.

Seeing as how Fallcrest was the closest place to drink away the pain, I set off on the 3 day journey, and just recently arrived.

I'm kicking back pints at the Lucky Gnome, honoring the memory of my fallen shield brother by telling stories of our adventures. I may have gotten into a brawl or two, I can't quite recall. Anyway, I get this message from a halfling messenger telling me Faringray wants my help.

Pff, Faringray.

Yeah, I know him. Lost two of my brothers protecting his unit from a band of Orcs a few years back. Now look at him. A captain. Ha. Humans and their ranks.

I've made up my mind to go about my business and leave this town and Faringray behind when I get my bill. Looks like I'm down to just 10 gold...

Ok, maybe I'll just see what this is all about. Besides, if we are off to the borderlands I may just get a chance to avenge the death of my brother Aldrik, and maybe recover my father's axe.

BACKGROUND - Riclamin Serpenthelm - Half-Elf Cleric

Riclamin, from birth, has been an outcast. Born of a Elvish princess and a her human lover, a commoner and a lowborn, Riclamin is shunned by both of his heritages. Teased and taunted as a child, Riclamin had few associates and fewer friends, preferring to keep to himself, his books, and his dreams.

Through his studies, Riclamin learned of the gods. In particular, he was awed by the stories of the kind, purehearted Bahamut, defender of good and opponent of all things vile. In his arms Riclamin would find shelter, devoting his life not to social interaction, not to making goods, but to the worship of the god who stood against exclusion...who stood for what was right! Finding his faith has brought charm, wit, and compassion to his once lonely and reclusive life.

Through his work as a Cleric of Bahamut, Riclamin has travelled far and wide, preached to a great many, helped heal many more, and is a pillar of virtue in his community. It's no small wonder that his name is known far and wide, if not for his heroic deeds, then for his kind nature and his healing touch.

While tending to his duties in the Church of Bahamut, he is approached by a Hafling with a note. Faringray seeks his help. But why the help of a cleric, thinks Riclamin. Unholy occurrences? Here? He kindly gives a few silvers to the halfling messenger, finishes his chores, and sends a disciple to notify Faringray of his imminent arrival. The duty of the Gods first, the duty of man shall follow...

Alexander O'Connor -- Human Wizard

When the halfling leaves, I walk over to the window and try to see where he is going next. Our short conversation has put my suspicions to rest for the most part, but not completely. Two things stand out in my mind. One: he talked of wizards; maybe wizards are watching me and maybe an opportunity is presenting itself here to get on their good side. Two: he mentioned letters, plural. Evidently I am not the only person he sought out.

I walk over to the bar, where Bethani is busy. I say to her: "Hi, uh... Bethani is it? I assume the drinks go on my bill?" [I am a guest at the Inn] "Hey, thanks for taking care of me tonight." I drop a few coins on the bar, making a generous tip. [I don't know how much that would be in silvers, say something like $10]

After she has pocketed the money, I try to start a little conversation: "Hey, that halfling that I was talking to... You know him, don't you? He gave me a letter from a Captain Faringray. Do you know who that is?" I am trying to get some information. I am not going to be pushy about it, but as long as she has a bit of time for me, I am seeking answers to the following questions:
- Who is Faringray?
- Does he often ask complete strangers to perform a task for him?
- Where would the halfling have gone to distribute more of these letters? I am assuming that if someone else who got a letter is staying at the Inn, she might know about it. If not, she might know where someone else like that might be staying.

[If you want to wait with responding to this until the final two have given their background, that is fine, of course. I am going to bed soon anyway.]

Zanroar Acidhorn - Tiefling Warlord
My name is Zanroar Acidhorn. My human parents abandonned me at birth, or so I heard, to a nomadic tribe of half-orcs who somehow accepted me.
I trained with weapons everyday, but always felt left aside, and in no way at home. The half-orcs weren't really smart either, and I wanted to learn more.
I left them as soon as I was old enough.

I lived in a big city for a few years, earning a few coins wherever brawns were needed and spending time in libraries to learn about any basic knowledge I lacked because of my savage uprising, and more.

When I grew tired of it, I left and started wandering from town to town, offering mercenary work.
Doesn't earn much, but what I'm really after is the thrill of life or death battles.
I just arrived in Fallcrest and spent the night at the Nentir inn, planning to look for some work today.

When I hear the message from the halfling messenger, I'm not really surprised. Probably some bandit problems again, like in Hammerfast. It's nice to have some work come to me by itself for once.
I hand him 5 silver and head out immediately, rejoicing at the prospect of battle.
Even if the message turns out to be a trap, it'll probably lead to some fighting anyway.

Call it an even gold piece, or 10 silvers.

She pouts thoughtfully. "Well, I think he's almost always looking for volunteers. My cousin Abrim moved here from Harkenwold, a few weeks ago, looking for soldier training, and Faringray snapped him right up, even before he knew Abrim was my cousin."

"Goodness! I couldn't begin to say. If they're strangers like yourself, begging your pardon, then I suppose you might check the Nentir Inn, especially if they're dwarves. Dwarves seem to favor the Nentir for some reason."

Well, I am in need of extra funding, and it looks like I would have a chance to practice my arts. It all seems legit enough, so I'll have a look tomorrow morning what the offer of this Captain Faringray is exactly.

I go to bed, and the next morning get up early to concentrate on the Sleep spell again. As I do not know if I will return this night, I pack my bags, but leave them with the innkeeper. I pay him for the few nights I stayed, and tell him I might return tonight, or in a couple of days at most. I only take a backpack with a few things that I might need on a short trip (including my trusty spell book, of course).

I head out to the ferry, and travel across the river.

I wake up groggy from a long night of mead and revelry at the Lucky Gnome. The first few rays of sunlight pierce through the windows as my head begins to pound.

Seeing as how I may be gone for some time, I look around to see if there is anything of interest I may want for the upcoming adventure. I know the borderlands to be harsh and treacherous, sure would be nice to pack a horn or two of mead for the trek...

My name is Xyrlynn Brekahn. I am a 26 year old Halfling-rogue. I was born in Nenlast to parents Dardiana and Zannan Brekhan. When I was only 8 years old a group of mercenaries from Harkenwold invaded our town looting us and burning many of our buildings to the ground. My mother, working as a barmaid in a local tavern, died unable the fire set by the mercenaries. My father, full of rage, sought after the men who burned down the tavern following them to Hammerfast where he met his death by sword. Word of my father's death reached me when my uncle, Ricrry, returned from the mission of vengeance he, my father, and several men from our town had embarked on. Ricrry told me my father had fought valiantly for my mother and our people but they were vastly outnumbered and after loosing several men were forced to retreat. When the men returned to our town most people packed up what was left of their meager belongings and moved on since little was left of our small town. I packed a small sack and made my way to Winterbole Forest where I spent the remainder of my childhood and my teen years teaching myself to hunt and live off the land.

As a young woman of 23 I began venturing into nearby towns to see what I could learn about the men who pillaged our town so long ago. I knew from what my uncle had told me years ago the man responsible for my father's death was Walhand Shahorn so I sought any information I could about his whereabouts. After a few years of seeking information I heard from a reliable source that the man who killed my father was living as a master thief in Winterhaven. I decided to seek vengeance for my father's death and traveled to Winterhaven. I stayed for weeks to learn Walhand's routine and one night long after dark when he left a tavern I killed him and fled to Gardbury Downs. I was certain no one knew it was me who left him dead along the side of the road so feeling confident and pleased that I had finally avenged my father's death I decided to make my way down King's road to Fallcrest.

Fallcrest was a bigger town than any place I had settled but I had decided it was now time for me to settle down and make a life of my own. Not knowing the town or anyone in it I sought refuge at the Silver Unicorn Inn. Having just arrived I sat in the pub and ordered a meal. I had little money so I knew I would need to seek work soon. Not long after receiving my porridge I was approached my a Halfling who handed me a tattered letter asking for my services and offering to pay me well for my efforts. It spoke of my heroism and made me wonder what it was talking about. Did someone know about me murdering Walhand? Surely everyone knew that Walhand was a thief and a murderer and would be glad to see him gone but how could anyone know it was me that killed him. Intrigued and in need a work and a new direction in life I decided I would meet Captain Faringray the following morning and find out what this was all about.

A short ferry ride brings you to the western shore of the river. You walk along a muddy road past farmers’ dwellings, perhaps on your own, perhaps in the company of one of the other passengers who seems to be going your way, until you see an open field of tilled earth and thicker mud. In the middle of the field scream a dozen militia recruits. They attack one another with wild abandon, swinging wooden swords and shields. Watching them with dismay is a cloaked man on horseback. Near him, standing in a puddle by the road, is a dour dwarf smoking a pipe. Rain pours off his wide-brimmed hat.

After on particularly shoddy set of maneuvers by the recruits, the man on horseback rolls his eyes imploringly to the heavens. It's at this point that he catches site of you. He instructs the recruits to set back up and try it again, and then waves you toward him. He trots his horse in your direction and the dwarf stomps along after him.

"Hello, there," says the man, as he dismounts near you. "I'm glad you could make it. I'm Nathan Faringray." He offers his hand in greeting and you see that his is a strong, handsome man in his early forties. He's got a wry smile, both laugh- and worry-lines and seems to be going grey quickly. Under his sopping cloak, he wears a longsword in a scratched scabbard.

"And this is Sorik Orvash, late of Hammerfast."
The dwarf stands where he is some distance apart and nods, tipping a bucketful of water from his hatbrim as he does so.

"I'll get right to it: I just lost some of my most well-trained guards yesterday. They were helping to protect a tower in the borderlands and the stonemasons, including Sorik here, who have been trying to rebuild it. According to Sorik, the tower was attacked yesterday, by a force of human brigands, with at least a few animated skeletons working alongside them. Sorik is the only one who escaped.

"We don't have the guards to spare to head up there and check it out. I was called back from the tower just a week ago to train these... people, in order to bolster our patrols along the King's Road. They won't be ready even for that for more than a few more weeks. So, knowing that we had some capable folk in our midst, including our own Brother Serpenthelm, I got Lord Markelhay's permission to ask for your help. You'd be doing the town a great service if you could see to the rescue of any survivors and put paid to who or whatever is menacing the tower. If we can get it repaired, it would mean a lot more protection along the western borderlands.

"So, I'm sure that's a lot to take in. I hope you'll agree to help. Have you got any questions?"

Alexander asks: "Do you have some more information on these attacks? How many brigands are we talking about? And considering that they have animated skeletons with them, I assume they have magicians amongst them? Do you have some supplies for us, in particular weaponry? And last but definitely not least: you mentioned payment..."

Thromgood to Sorik Orvash: Hammerfast eh? So you've heard of the Stormhammers then? How about getting me a better maul, some solid dwarven steel, and I'll think about heading out and paying back the brigands that did this to you...

Faringray defers to Sorik.

"The live ones was human. Dead shots with their crossbows. Wore leather armor, and they'd gone and painted their faces to look like skulls. Yellow skulls.

"Think the guards smashed done most of the skeletons. But while they was at that, the bandits were at work with their crossbows. Didn't get a good look, but it ain't likely that all their shots missed.

"I didn't see no sign of a wizard, or whatnot. But they can be tricky devils."

"I've regularly encountered undead shock troops with no magic-user nearby," says Faringray. "They'll prepare their 'troops' and send them in, then stroll through later after the fighting is done. Cowards.

"What supplies do you want? You look fairly well equipped, though I suppose it's better to have and not need, as they say.

"As for payment, yes. I've been authorized to offer you 500 gold pieces if you can make the tower safe enough for work to resume under guard. Payable once the guard's been reestablished there, of course, and you'd have to take up any talk of an advance with Lord Markelhay's people. Naturally, anything you take off the brigands is yours to keep, unless Lord Markelhay offers you a fair price for it."

Orvash nods at the mention of the name. "They're good people. Good in a fight. As for a better weapon, that one you got there's better'n any you'd find in town. Even the dwarven smiths mostly forge stuff for the... softer races.

"But, if any of my kinfolk can be rescued, or at least lain to rest proper, why you'd be owed a fair debt by my family and other folk in Hammerfast. And we pay our debts."

Alexander: [Considering my knowledge of Arcana, History, and Religion, do I have any idea about what these yellow skull-faces stand for? Could it be some kind of religious cult?

And considering the reward: is he offering us 500 gp per person or in total? I have still little idea of how much it is, but 500 gp seems quite a lot.

Going by Alexander's background, I'd say that he wouldn't know about this group. If you're interested as to why, I don't mind telling you out of character, or it's possible Alexander will find it out in character.

In total. The total would be more than enough to purchase single very high quality piece of equipment. 100 gp is probably enough to live on comfortably for some months, or sparingly for a year.

Incidentally, don't think in terms of the real-world value of gold or any other precious minerals mentioned in the game.

Alexander considers the proposal. He looks at the band of adventurers around him, and addresses Riclamin: "You are a cleric, right? Do you have some means of dealing with the undead? It might be a good idea to check the site out. If we have to make a hasty escape, I can probably keep the brigands of our backs for sufficient time to get away, but I don't know if I can handle those skeletons."

Xyrlynn to Faringray: "I've done a fair amount of adventuring, exploring and living off the land and I am willing to take on this challenge. The payment seems fair enough. Though I am resourceful I would agree that supplies and weapons would make us better able to face whatever lies ahead. I am quick and quiet and I know I can be an asset to you. What I lack in size I make up for in speed and fortitude."

"Well, the smallest of you appears to be the bravest. I hope the rest of you won't be letting her go alone, capable though she is. And I wouldn't ask you to head out unprepared, of course. Take the time to gather what you need." He looks ruefully into the sky.

"Might I suggest some rain gear?"

Spoiler (mouseover to reveal):
You can request a few gold worth of mundane items from Faringray and he'll see about obtaining them from the Guard stores. They have fewer members than they have supplies to give them.

Alexander says: "Yes, the weather is looking ugly, and if we are going to spend the day outside, we might need some of that heavy rain gear that your troops are wearing. Could we get some supplies from your stocks for this assignment? Some rain coats, rations, and things like that?"

He looks at Orvash: "You, sir, know the area and the site of the tower. How far do we have to travel? Could you come with us as a guide? Or, if not, draw us a map of the site? That could give us a little edge."

Faringray nods. "That's fair enough. Brom!" he calls over his shoulder. One of the recruits looks up from his mock skirmish. "I need you to run into town, and get some supplies from the barracks. And keep your damn guard up!" As he says this, one of the other recruits sweeps Brom's legs out from under him with a quarterstaff and Brom splats into the muddy field. Faringray rubs his forehead but calls out, "Well done pressing the advantage, Anajeen." The young woman in question beams, but doesn't let her attention to the melee waver.

"Yeah, captain asked me to take you, and I agreed. Least I can do, I suppose. It's twenty-five miles west of here, as the drake flies, and not along good roads, or wholesome lands. I don't reckon you'll want to take the straight path, so all told it'll be thirty. I was running for my life, and the lives of the others, so made that in fifteen hours straight through. I'd bet on the Stonehammer here to do better, but I doubt he be much good for fighting without a stop and a rest at a friendly home at the other end like I had. No offense.

"Count on at least three good marches, assuming all goes well, up the Nentir and then west, skirting the Fens. But, it's up to you how we go. With a group like this, we could go straight through the Cloak Wood, and shave and get back those five miles. Figure we could push it down to two marches, if we did that."

Faringray shakes his head. "I don't recommend it. There are rumors of kobolds living in there. You might wind up taking much longer than you intended in there, even assuming you make it back out. But I leave the decision to you.

"I can have the supplies gathered in an hour. If you have any personal belongings you don't want to bring along, I can store them in the barracks. When will you be leaving?"

Spoiler (mouseover to reveal):
The map shows the landmarks mentioned above, if you're curious. However, don't think of that map as a physical think your characters can reference, but something that they could pull together from research they might do or have already done. I might as well point out there there's a "Temple of the Yellow Skulls" on the map. As per my notes on out-of-character knowledge, it's possible that your characters could know about this location, though its significance, meaning, and exact connection to the yellow-skulled bandits might remain unknown without further research, questioning, and exploration.

Alexander says: "I expected to be gone for a few days, so I'd be able to leave as soon as the supplies are in. It is still morning, and we could do our first march today. As for which route to take, I don't think we should waste our strength on fighting kobolds, so I'd prefer the longer journey. However, I am well-prepared to deal with a couple of kobolds if some of you are in a hurry, as long as I get a chance to get a good night's sleep before we arrive at the tower."
