The Golden Geek Award is given annually to the best new games of the year, as selected by you, the users. The "Geekies" will be given in the following categories:

For Board Games
---------------
- Game of The Year (based on finalists from the nominations)
- Best Strategy Game
- Best Abstract Game
- Best Thematic Game
- Best Family Game
- Best Wargame
- Best 2-player Game
- Best Party Game
- Best Children's Game
- Best Card Game
- Best Artwork/Presentation
- Best Expansion
- Best Print & Play
- Most Innovative

For RPGs
--------
- RPG Game of the Year
- Best Artwork & Presentation
- Best Supplement
- Best Podcast

For Video Games
---------------
- Video Game of the Year
- Best Visuals/Artwork
- Best Indie Game
- Best Mobile/Handheld Game
- Most Innovative Game

Here are the specifics:

In order to avoid voter fraud, we have adopted the following restrictions. Voting is restricted to either supporting users (having a supporter badge from any year is sufficient),voters who pay a one-time 20 GeekGold fee, or users who have purchased an avatar or a geekbadge.

Anyone caught stuffing the ballot box will have their votes removed and be suspended from the site.

There will be two steps to selecting the winners.

First, there will be a nomination phase. Each eligible voter can nominate up to 10 items in each of the categories. The 10 items with the most nominations in each category will become the nominees for the final voting. You are not restricted to the list of suggested nominees.

The board game nomination page is here.
The RPG nomination page is here.
The video game nomination page is here.

The final voting will be resolved using a condorcet voting system - specifically the Schulze method. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schulze_method

For those who don't want to read the specifics of the system, users will rank the games in each category from 1 to 10, (with a 0 for no opinion), and, through some mathemagical computations, we will select the winner.

The nomination phase will run until 9/30 and the final voting for one more month (10/31). The winners will be announced at BoardGameGeek.CON 2012 in November.

You are welcome to campaign, discuss voting and nominations, etc, as much as you like. Let the awards begin!

The annual task of selecting the best of the best is upon us. A heavy duty that requires the utmost attention and true devotion from us geeks.

Let's get to it.

I'm trying to do my duty of nominating award-worthy games but I've just hit into an obstacle: how do I submit the form once I've filled in my nominations?
I can find no clickable button or command.

Great, thank you!

(Yet sadly I still can't see any yellow infobox in the form)

Wait, we're voting for the "best new game of 2012" when there are still a few months left in 2012?

On a side note - wow there are an insane number of games released this year that I've never heard of.

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

That's always been a gray area in these, and I've seen games nominated in back-to-back years and even games nominated that had been published 3 years prior to the award year shake

Personally I would only nominated and vote for 2011 and 2012 games. (at least, 2011 and 2012 publication of the language I played them in, a la SdJ).

The Dice Tower (THE boardgame podcast, IMO) isn't available to nominate...? Seems a glaring oversight.

Looks like "Best Podcast" is just an RPG category, they aren't doing one for boardgames. Dice Tower doesn't really do RPGs, do they?

I have some issues with the games available for nomination.

Here is the anecdote, both taken from the same designer to add effect

CO₂ is up for nomination and hasn't been released yet. It will have JUST been released at Essen this year, but I'm not even sure that's a 100% guarantee.

Vinhos is NOT available and only hit US Shores this year. I know it was released in Europe already, but it's now widely available in the States. Also... it's one of the finest pieces of graphic design achievement in the history of board games, and I would like to nominate it as such.

Have the criteria for inclusion been elaborated anywhere?

For example, is there soft overlap between gaming release cycles, it is release vs. availability, can you be nominated two years running because of these grey issues? I don't know if I have any issues with the games available because I don't understand the inclusion criteria. If I missed it, my bad. But does the information exist somewhere so I can look at it?

I love this process and that BGG does this, but I'm a bit ignorant of the details regarding inclusion and I'd like to know more. The Schulze voting process looks interesting, but I'm way back at the beginning just trying to understand how you get invited to the party.

I think that if you use the search tool, you can add Vinhos and any other.

This year seems to have flown by. It feels like just a few months since we had the last Golden Geek awards. I kind of wish it was in January so it would be a really clear cut Jan 1 through Dec 31st type of award.

There really should be other ways to be qualified to vote. How about also letting anyone who has rated a minimum number of games vote. A value of 100 ratings seems reasonable although 50 would probably be fine I'd think. I'd think that accounts which have been active for a while (1 year maybe?) should be ok as well.

Speaking of, isn't it past time to create a 10 year geek veteran award?
