Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
Welcome

First it would be good if all of you could state in which time zone he (or she?) is living, so we know when to expect posts and when not. It would also be nice to know if you have prior RPG experience, if you know FATE and if you have the slightest idea what 'Cthulhu' could be (don't worry, you don't really want to know the last thing).

I'm aiming for at least one post a day. If this is to much for someone (or not enough for all?) please tell me so.

This thread is for all communication outside the actual game, which will happen in an IC thread which I will create as soon as we are ready to go.

Character development in FATE is actually part of the play, so it is now up to you to decide if we use partially pre-generated characters, or if each of you decides completely about his (or her?) character. Time wise this will not matter much, so if you are up to it, I would prefer if we do it in full. Please tell me your preference.

If you can't post because you go on vacation or because of some other cause, it would be perfect if you can inform all of us on this thread, so we know that there will be a lag. If someone misses the post time three times without notification, I will his character on auto pilot. So this will be three days, if we keep the one post per day interval.

As for the background you already have a lot of it. It's WWII, you are a special ops team (British MI-6, foreign agents welcome), and you will be going to Czechoslovakia on a secret mission.

I'm in Germany, so it's now midnight for me. That means I will be hitting my bed soon after I post this. My next post will likely be tomorrow.

Don't forget to subscribe to the thread!

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
Hiya! I'm Dan, I'm on GMT and I've been roleplaying for I-don't-even-want-to-think-about-how-many years. I've played the odd game of Call Of Cthulhu in that time, so I know the basic shape of the Mythos.

I've read the Fate Core rulebook but I've never played a Fate game. Full character generation is fine with me, as are daily updates. Thanks for running this, I'm really looking forward to it!

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
Evening. I am in prescott az. I do not know GMT but during the winter I am on Mountain Time and during the summer I am on pacific time.

My RPG experience goes back to Advanced AD&D First Edition. Aged second edition too but then stoped. I picked up with 4th edition about 2 years ago but walked away because I am not happy with it.

I decided to get into RPG again and found Fiasco. This went over very well with my group and also introduced me to Evil Hat. That I turn introduced me to the Dresden Files RPG which is based in FATE. I am not all the way through the books but have picked up some if the gist of FATE.
I found this on the FATE Core Kickstarter.
Also I know nothing about Cthulu.
As far as the creation of characters I would like to start from scratch if for no other reason than to learn how to do so.

Oh sorry it is 6:07pm right now.

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
Hello my name is Herman and I am in CST - Central Standard Time. I have various experiences with the FATE system since I've GM-ed multiple Dresden Files games and Spirit of the Century but have not played FATE CORE but I have the KS PDF (best deal I've seen so far on KS). Full-on character creation is perfectly fine with me. I am familiar with Cthulhu material from various board games and that 2005 movie. As far as posting once a day while it seems reasonable I might have prior engagements and work come up so I hope that is not a problem. Im thinking of doing a foreign agent but I'll have to brush up on my history.

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
So I see I don't need to add an 'go and pledge for Fate Core' line

I am shocked that I don't know 'the 2005 movie'. Ok, I'm generally sceptical about CoC (Call of Cthulhu) movies, but this seems actually to have a high score on IMDB.

First big tip for 'the newbies': you can learn about forum markup on this wiki page, and by clicking on the 'Quote' link of an article that shows formatting that you want to use. In the last case just try to find the section that you want to replicate and use the tags that did what you like to do

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
Most of you seem to be comfortable with making the characters completely. Lets do this.

To make a character you first need to have a concept. I already did set the baselines, but let me get a bit more specific. There will be two broad types of operatives: Research Agents and Field Agents.

A research agent will have an academic background and will probably be recruited from a university. He (or she) will have lots of knowledge skills and less field skills (like crazy martial arts or shooting).

The field agent will have his focus on the crazy shooting and infiltration skills, but less knowledge stuff.

And by knowledge I mean obscure sciences like History, Archaeology, Ancient Languages, Parapsychology, etc.

But don't let this hinder you to make a crossover of both (kind of Indiana Jones Ohio Jackson).

So the first I like you to do is to come up with a broad concept of what your character will be. If there are collisions, you should talk about it (for example four sharpshooters could become kind of dull...).

General concepts could be:
* Infiltration Specialist
* Transportation and Operations
* Arcane Knowledge and Obscure Sciences
* Communications and Cryptology
* Psychological Warfare Expert
* Ranged Weapons Expert

And while you are thinking about this broad concept you could perhaps also come up with some trouble your operative might have.

In the end someone will become the teams leader. As this is a intelligence gathering mission this will be one of the research oriented agents.

Important: if I'm going to fast, if you have a question, etc. Just ask or tell me. No question is stupid. And I need to get a feel with what speed you are comfortable with.

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
OK, I like the idea of playing as hard against the suave, stiff-upper-lip, James Bond cliché of MI6 as possible.

So I'm thinking of a blue-collar bear of a man who's trying to make his way in a service that's largely made up of pencil-moustached public-school types. As a practical sort who's not afraid to get his hands dirty it seems to make sense to make him a Transport And Operations guy, unless someone else is really keen on that role? I could also see him as an Infiltration or Demolitions And Sabotage Specialist.

I've got a couple of potential ideas for his trouble. One is that he lacks the education or sophistication of many of his peers in MI6 so he feels like he has to be twice as good as them to get half the credit (and he might be right!). With apologies to John Lennon, I might call that Aspect Working-Class Hero, which also implies solidity and down-to-earth practicality. If you want to be less poetic, "Something To Prove" covers much the same ground.

The other thought I had is that possibly his practicality manifests itself as wanting to be as prepared as possible for any situation he finds himself in, and so he is uncomfortable when things start deviating from "the plan". I'd call this Belt And Braces or more plainly Bit Of A Control Freak.

Any thoughts or preferences?

In wartime it will be a bit more military than a pure cold war, James Bond, suit kind of spy. So more like the beginnings of S.A.S. kind of guys (from the field agent side of play). Or perhaps 'The Wild Geese' transplanted back to WWII? Just to correct the mood

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
I'm thinking of an MI-6 agent from Spain, a defeated soldier from the Republican faction (Bando Republicano) of the Spanish Civil War. Essentially, he fled/defected to England after the Spanish Civil War ended and his faction was defeated by Generalísimo Franco(which was on April 1939) so I'm thinking he's new to MI-6. I'm thinking of taking the Communications and Cryptology approach to him since the idea is that he can crack the Franciscan government code and since Spain is allies with Nazi Germany at the time MI-6 figures he can be a valuable asset. For clarification I'm taking the research agent approach with this character but he is a veteran of the Spanish Civil War so by no means is he a pansy.

For a High Concept what about Defeated Republican Veteran Cryptologist - It ties in his main profession but also brings up the fact that his faction lost the war.

As far as Troubles I'm thinking of two things:
1. Immigrant in a Strange Land - He looks heavily Spanish and by no means is he good when it comes to blending into a crowd or pretending to be an unforgettable face.
2. A Spy within a Spy - the idea is that he and other Republicans don't believe the war is over and that if at any point he can do harm to Franco he will. It essentially aligns his loyalty to the Bando Republicano and not England or his companions.

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
War veteran with communications skills sounds good. This will possibly take you on the research agent side of the game. Skill-list wise we will be using nearly the Fate Core list, but I will call Lore 'Knowledge' (or perhaps Dresden-wise Scholarship?). It will cover all academic stuff. Cryptology could be a stunt of this.

Anyone not knowing about aspects and skills in Fate (Jack?): don't worry, we get to it after the concepts are chosen.

Oh no, I got the mood of the game. It's just as I understood it prior to the war MI6 didn't conduct military operations and were more of an old-boys-network sort of organisation. No problem, anyway.

I still like the basic idea of a big, blunt, practical common-as-muck Operations And Transport Specialist, I'll just steer more into the second idea for his trouble than the first. I've a vague idea that he made a mistake or a bad error of judgement at some point in his past and that's resulted in him making sure he's planned and prepared meticulously for every aspect of an operation but leads him to become uncomfortable and hesitant if contingencies arise that he's not allowed for. Like I said, I like "Belt And Braces" for that Aspect, but if you've got a better idea I'm all ears.

On the other hand, it's a Cthulhu game set in the Second World War. It's not like he's going to come up against something unexpected, is it?

Right. Just the common Nazi you will encounter in that time period. Nothing to worry.

Sal and Jack: do you need help? Or perhaps some more input to get the ideas flowing?

Perhaps a Czech refugee (or with Czech ancestry) operative (someone who can actually talk in the language of the land you are going to) could come in handy. There are also good universities all over Europe, so there is no problem to have him be the brains?

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
Nice!

I added a page to the wiki for our game: Three Kings PbF

On it you will find links to pages for each of your character, as well as an link to the Pre-gens we did not use. You can use my templates for the tables to write down your characters so far.

There is also a list of skills. If you have Fate Core (do you?), you will notice that I collapsed Burglary and Stealth into Infiltration, Lore has become Knowledge. There is also Mythos Lore, everyone will have at -2. Except someone with an aspect that implies he had some mythos experience (indicated by an fitting Aspect). Perhaps Jack/Petro might be the one qualified for this.

I'm open for ideas to get cooler skill names. Feel free to propose if you have ban better idea.

Also I'm thinking about splitting Knowledge into 'Humanities' (Medicine, Psychology, History, Archaeology, ...) and 'Sciences' (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, ...) to get the science types a bit more separated.

As your 'Credit Rating' is of no interest, Resources will map into activities like survival and scrounging.

If you like you can think about your first 'normal' aspect: Your first adventure. This can be something you already did for MI-6, or something prior to this. Write up a summary what happened and think up an aspect.
A good time to introduce some more background for skills you might have (for example a higher Mythos Lore starting value).

BTW: don't try hard to get Mythos Lore! It will have similar effects like the Cthulhu Mythos skill in plain old CoC! It is also the skill to identify Mythos stuff or even to do rituals and other weird stuff. Currently I would only see Jack/Petro as eligible.

Weirdly, we actually seem a bit light on muscle at the moment. Is that likely to be a problem? I can easily shift my concept to be a bit less of a fixer and a bit more of a bruiser.

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
I have a couple of questions regarding the Mythos Madness Skills.

1.Does Infiltration replace Stealth or does it cover other situations?
Never Mind you already answered that question.

2.Can we take the "Special: Mythos Lore" skill even if we do not have an aspect that states we have Mythos experience or do we always start rolling it off at -2?
Never Mind you answered that too.

Okay my New Year Resolution from now on will be read all previous posts completely before I open my mouth. sorry

As far as separating Humanities and Sciences I think its good idea but only if we would come across scenes where Humanities would clearly work where Sciences wouldn't and vice versa.

Re: [OOC] Achtung! Cthulhu: Three Kings (Fate Core)
Mythos Lore defaults to -2. Any other skill defaults to 0. So you really don't need to note it down, as you don't write down the skills you don't choose.

The negative effect of Mythos Lore is that the GM (that's me!) gets a weapon rating for his Sanity Attacks that depends on the Mythos Lore of the character confronted with the mind bending situation. So if you have a high Mythos Lore, horrific stuff might influence you more than the 'ignorant' others

No, I don't think he will see it that way... whistle

I just decided that we make the Knowledge split.

Edit: Small add on to this. As you already might have guessed, my Mythos Madness FC hack is still in development. You can find a version of my document on Google Drive.

If you have ideas suggestions, etc, shoot right away!

OK, just wanted to check before I ploughed ahead!

Wilf "Johnny" Johnson joined the Merchant Navy to see the world. Conscientious, reliable and with a knack for getting along with almost anyone, by 1933 he had risen to the rank of Purser aboard a steamer named the SS Whitby. During a voyage to Valencia, a passenger approached Johnny to ask if he had any contacts in the port who might be able to assist him in obtaining certain unusual and specialised items. The big Yorkshireman agreed to introduce him to a resourceful merchant of his acquaintance but no sooner had the two men stepped ashore than they were ambushed by a group of locals and Johnny was unable to prevent the passenger being carried off. Once he regained his senses, Johnny gathered together a small group of crewmen who owed him favours and began scouring his contacts and the dockside bars for the lost passenger he was responsible for. Some greased palms and broken heads later the passenger was recovered and Johnny had a offer to put his resourcefulness and knowledge of half the world's ports to work for king and country.

Aspect: We Don't Leave People Behind.

(sorry, had about four attempts at this today and I'm still not terribly happy with it. Gah.)
