It's coming! October 18th, 19th and 20th of 2013 will see our first RPG Geek virtual convention. Known as Virtuacon '13 and unofficially dubbed "The Best 3 Days in Virtual Gaming" we plan on hosting a large number of slotted events along with some pick-up games. We are endorsing the use of Google Hangouts with add-in applications such as Roll20 for the actual play.

You can see what a typical Roll20 session inside Google Hangouts looks like:

It's the next best thing to being at the table with your friends!

Now the event has organizers who are working behind the scenes to get things rolling. It has an amazing event Microbadge mb (not for general distribution yet). But the next step in making this all work is to have a slate of Game Masters willing to run games during the actual event!

Each game slot is 4 hours. You will notice that the 11 time-slots are spaced out by 5 hours - leaving 1 hour between games (in case one game runs a little long or you need a break between two successive slots, etc). We plan on having multiple games running during each of the 11 time-slots. A rough goal would be to have 50-60 games offered during the virtual convention - an average of 5 or 6 games for every time-slot. We realize some time-slots will be more popular than others, and that's okay.

All games are specified in Universal Coordinated Time (UTC). Go here for the current UTC: http://time.is/UTC

Here are the available time-slots (with local time in some common worldwide cities in 24-hour format ... subtract 12 to get PM times)

What we need is for people to commit to running an RPG in one of the timeslots above. You can run more than one game - that's fine... but we ask that no GM runs more than 2 games total to avoid burnout. Game slots are 4 hours in length and run at the start of the time-slots listed above. There are no exceptions. The organizers will accumulate the games being offered.

You do not need previous Google Hangout experience. We will be teaching people how to use the virtual tools - Google Hangouts, Roll20, etc. If you have PC, Mac or Linux setup with a camera and/or microphone/headset, you'll be totally fine. It doesn't require much horsepower to run these tools - we've been using them for the past few months to great success.

If you are a boardgamer/cardgamer and want to run something which Google Hangouts can provide support for, feel free. We're thinking things like Werewolf would work great in this medium. Please contact us before volunteering to see how well it fits with the other events we're running.

Just post below with what timeslot(s) you would like and what game you would be offering. Just a simple "Time-Slot A: 18-Oct-2013 at 16:00 UTC - Pathfinder" is enough for now. We'll get more details on your offering in the coming months. Right now, we just want to get slots filled. There will be special Virtuacon GM microbadges which are under design.

Some more Google Hangout RPG goodness to wet your appetite (these are all from RPG Geek regulars):

Cross Posting to all domains for a day to see if we pick up additional volunteers... Remember, you don't need previous Google Hangout or Roll20 experience. Technical Assistance is standing by to help!

Lastly, if you are involved with other RPG communities, please let them know that we would love to have them come help with this event!

I'll happily run a homemade Eclipse Phase scenario on Friday.

I'd like to run some other games, but will wait to see which slots need games before I officially sign up for this.

This is amazing! But it also happens to be right before Essen - a very busy time for me, and many other people, I presume.

It's the week before and best of all, you can do it from the comfort of your own home. Or on the train-ride to Essen

It's never easy to pick a date when there are so many events competing for people's attention. Since we are a 'play at home' event, we felt that the week before Essen would still allow people going to the toy fair to still participate (even if only as players).

Probably a non-issue, but thanks! I'm sure some time-slots will be more popular than others for GMs. I'm guessing that means they will be more popular for player signups as well. It will all work out.

Or crash and burn horribly.

One can never tell with these sorts of events!

I guess we will be using pre-gens, though some RPGs might include char-gen as well. Should players know the rules? Or is this more intended as a newbie initiative?

This is a very good question - and one I was thinking about just a little bit ago. I was thinking that if people sign up ahead of time, they should have plenty of time to make a character if they desire. However, using Pre-Gens would not be off the table, as it would allow a greater base of players to take part.

We've got 5 months to work that out

Well... okay, probably 3 months until we take player-signups into virtual table slots.

Given that this is, at its heart, a convention, we will do what they do at conventions. For games which are short and char-gen is part of the experience (say, for Dungeon World), we do char-gen. For more traditional games like Pathfinder, CoC, AD&D, etc. we would strongly encourage the use of pre-gens. Ultimately it will be up to the Game Masters to run their game in the 4 hour slot. For my game, I'll have 8 or 10 pre-gens available for choosing. We may even have some thread work before the event for people that want to get those things nailed down before actual play. But mostly it's just like showing up to a table at a convention - you get an event ticket (we aren't charging for the events), you take your seat, the GM runs the game, you have fun and you move on. This will not be a newbie initiative - though new players are welcome to sign up when the time comes.

But one problem at a time... we're in the "need GMs to commit to running games" stage of problem solving. To be honest, if we looked at everything that it would take to put on an event of this scale, I'm sure most of us would go screaming into the hills and never return. So while we're planning many things, we're focused on one issue at a time

Do the games have to start at the hour listed in the slot? I would love to run something but my preferred starting time would be around 20:00 local time and I don't see any that comes even close. During the day I need to take care of my son and don't have time to game, at night I like to sleep

In theory, it can't be more than 4 hours off given that we are running time-slots every 5 hours (which also means that there is a sliding scale as the event goes on... each day the starting slot UTC time shifts 1 hour which is by design to give more opportunity to hit an 'ideal time-slot' for a player/GM). Just like an actual convention, the slots start and end on a schedule.

So... yes, games need to start on the hour listed. It's the only way to make the event work smoothly and allow people to join in other games, listen to guest speakers, participate in contests, etc. If it doesn't line up for you, that's cool - we'll hopefully have plenty of GMs to go around.
