It all started when I picked up the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set (First Edition)
at a local hobby store in the early '80s. Next, a friend introduced me to Star Fleet Battles
and I was done with D&D. Then came video games. I was done with traditional RPGs and wargames, and I lost all my old games over the years.
Almost three decades later during Oct. 2010 I wander into a local comic book store and see many RPGs, wargames, and these other games that I later discovered were called Eurogames. I picked up Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game
by Fantasy Flight Games
since it supported solo play and I enjoyed it greatly. This Eurogame got me interested in seeing what table top gaming was like nowadays.
First I discover that not only was Task Force Games
reborn as Amarillo Design Bureau, Inc.
, but they had a new streamlined and fast playing version of my beloved Star Fleet Battles
called Federation Commander
. I also discovered they had a RPG called Prime Directive
, and a monster wargame called Federation & Empire
I somehow missed in the early days.
Next I discover BoardGameGeek and ConsimWorld, and WOW look at all the games that are out there now!
This led me to a couple more RPGs, Deathwatch
from Fantasy Flight Games
and the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game
by Paizo Publishing
, but the big thing was the wargames!
I soon owned wargames from Academy Games
, GMT Games
, Victory Point Games
, Multi-Man Publishing
, and Compass Games
to name a few.
While I have a soft spot for RPGs and a few Euro card games, it now seems I am on the path of the Grognard
