RPG Geek of the Week

History

The RPG Geek of the Week is the spin-off from the ever popular Geek of the Week as instituted on BoardGameGeek in 2005. The GotW's week lasts from Sunday through Saturday (Sunday is the Switchover day).

The Nomination Process

The current RPG GotW alone chooses and introduces the next RPG GotW. There are no official qualifications for this honor. The nominee is simply someone that the current GotW thinks the rest of the RPG Geek community should get to know better. The reasoning and choice is entirely up to the current RPG GotW. However, in an effort to spread the RPG GotW honors around please consider the following:

  • The nominee should not be known personally to the current RPG GotW
  • The nominee should be from a different country

The current RPG GotW sends a geekmail to one of them asking if they would accept the honor. This should be done early in the week to give everyone time to prepare for the next week. In addition, if a potential nominee declines, the current RPG GotW can quickly contact another nominee.

RPG Geek of the Week Badges

We've got three different RPG GotW badges to choose from so pick carefully!

RPG Geek of the Week Uberbadges

We've got three Uberbadges to be used, if you want, during your time as RPG GotW. Feel free to use them.

What Does the Nominated GotW Need to Do to Prepare?

The nominee needs to write a brief introduction of him- or herself. The contents and length of this introduction is entirely up to the nominee, but should focus to some extent on their gaming career and interests. Some honorees have written only a brief paragraph, others have written several paragraphs that go into great detail. In addition, the nominee should compose three statements - two of which are truthful, and one a lie. Then, at the end of his or her RPG GotW week, he or she reveals which statement was a lie. When finished, this introduction is sent to the current RPG GotW. Before their week begins, the nominee should also look over their profile information and make sure it's up-to-date - people will look at a GotW's profile.

What is Expected of the RPG GotW During His/Her Week?

The main responsibility of the GotW is to answer questions, to the best of their ability, from other board members interested in learning more about him or her. Aside from this core responsibility, there are a few other expectations. He or she should:

  • Display the chosen RPG GotW microbadge in the center of their display for the week.
  • Decide on a successor, and prepare for introducing him or her the next week.

How Does the RPG GotW Introduce the Next RPG GotW?

After receiving the nominee's personal introduction, the current RPG GotW does the following:

  • Creates a new thread - some time on Sunday - with the subject in the format RPG Geek of the Week #: Full Name (username). Make sure the thread has a link back to this wiki.
  • He or she then writes a brief personal introduction of the new RPG GotW, and includes the nominee's introduction in quote format.
  • It's also expected that the RPG GotW include a number of questions to get the week started.
  • Once the thread has been created, the retiring RPG GotW should send a message to an Admin asking them to pin the new RPG GotW thread. Currently the admin handling the RPG Geek of the Week threads is wavemotion.
  • Important To keep things simple, the current RPG GotW should include three links when they notify the RPG GotW admin:
    1. A link to the outgoing RPG GotW thread that needs to be un-pinned.
    2. A link to the incoming RPG GotW thread that needs to be pinned.
    3. A link to the new RPG GotW's profile (so the admin can give them a shiny new microbadge) along with the new RPG GotW preference for the award microbadge (see the three choices above)
  • After that, the retired RPG GotW can relax and appreciate his or her participation in a great tradition.
