Wiki Content Guidelines

In general, a wide variety of content is appropriate for the wiki. In evaluating whether a particular kind of article or information should be included, consider the following criteria:

  • Neutrality. Articles on the wiki should attempt to have a neutral point of view. Reviews, opinions, personal commentary, rants, and the like belong in (and are generallly welcome in) the Forums and GeekLists.
  • Audience. Wiki contents should be of general interest, or at least not an overly constrained set of people. A wiki page for a gaming group which has only 5 people who ever attend it should probably not have a wiki page. If the same group is open to the public, the relevant audience is larger and a page may be reasonable.
  • Topic. This wiki is for board game and BoardGameGeek related contents. Tangential content should be carefully limited. For example, restaurant reviews is not an appropriate topic, generally, however a few limited reviews of restaurants in Essen or near where BGG.CON is held would be reasonable.
  • Location. BGG already has a lot of places for content. Where there is already an appropriate place, whether it be the Forums, GeekLists, a game entry (especially File Submissions), BGG Marketplace or elsewhere, put it there. The wiki is aimed at content that is not well suited for these locations. That said, many non-discussion articles people have written in the Forums would be very appropriate for inclusion in the wiki.
  • People. Except for people notable in the community, wiki pages about individuals should be heavily limited. When including pages about community members or other people, the content should be heavily restricted to the topical, board game related information. People pages should not be general biographies. When in doubt, simply link to a users profile using the [username=Aldie] notation.
  • Permission. If you are not the author of material you are posting to the wiki, be certain you have permission before doing so. If the content is likely to raise concerns over the permission, include a note and/or description of the permission obtained.

For the individual game description pages, see the Game Description Guidelines for some more specific examples. For discussion of these guidelines, please post to the thread: Wiki Content Guidelines Discussion. For information on formatting wiki pages on BGG, see the Wiki Formatting guide.
