Welcome to the PNP News! It feels like only three days ago that we gathered here to talk about the latest PNP games. If I keep posting this regularly, I might be mistaken for a professional.

This is post has some really cool games in it that I am really excited about. If you're into wargames or games with very unique themes, you'll find a lot to enjoy here.

As usual, there are several active contests. Be sure to check out the discussion thread for my potential Electronic Games PNP Contest as well.

I haven't checked in awhile, but I was amazed to see today that the microbadge for this blog has blasted past 300 owners! We're currently sitting at 324! Thank you very much to everyone who has purchased it. I really appreciate it.

If you would like the badge but don't have the 8 geekgold, let me know and I'll donate the geekgold to you.

Don't forget to follow my new Twitter account: @PNPGamesNews.

Let's get right to it!

PNP Design Contests

Upcoming Contests (maybe)
Two of my favorite hobbies are PNP games (obviously) and tinkering with simple electronics. I had the idea to combine the two into a PNP Design Contest where the games had some sort of electrical component. Think of games like Dark Tower, Operation, or Simon. At the moment, I'm trying to gauge interest from others in the PNP community. This contest could require purchasing some electronic hardware such as LEDs, wires, and microcontrollers to participate.
We are just talking about it right now. There are no dates set at this point and the contest may not actually happen if there isn't enough interest. If this is something that you might enjoy, please come to the discussion thread and share your thoughts.

Current Contests
2019 54-Card Game Design Contest hosted by Dustin Culbertson.
This is the second annual contest dedicated to 54 cards games. The challenge here is to design a game with no other components other than the cards. There are geekgold prizes, cash prizes, and even the chance at getting published!
Entry Deadline: Mar 31, 2019
Voting Deadline: June 30, 2019

2019 9 Card Game Print and Play Design Contest
This is the fourth annual contest dedicated to games that are contained entirely on 9 cards and a few common gaming items. This is my first year hosting the contest. The contest dates were recently extended (due to an illness and other personal delays on my end) and is now accepting entries until March 31, 2019. This contest is always a lot of fun and the design limitations generate some really innovative ideas. Also, thanks to the small size, all of the games are really easy to print and assemble.
Entry Deadline: March 31, 2019
Voting Deadline: May 12, 2019
An additional note on this contest: Professor Ethan Ham (simenzo on BGG) has invited his students studying game design at Bradley University to participate in the contest. There are tons of new and unique games entered in the contest this year from these first-time designers. Come check them out!

2019 Two-Player Design Contest
This is the seventh annual contest focused on two-player games. If you primarily play games with a significant other, this is the contest for you. This contest always generates some really great stuff. The contest is no longer accepting new entries so it is time to play all the awesome games already there.
Voting Deadline: April 30, 2019

2019 Roll and Write Game Design Contest
I believe this is the first ever BGG contest dedicated to Roll and Write Games. (There have been other contests but not hosted on BGG.) There are already several great games entered so try them out or enter some of your own!
Entry Deadline: 01 June 2019
Voting Closes: 15 June 2019

New Games

Storm Over Dublin designed by Philip Jelley
Storm Over Dublin is a 2 player game. This is an area-impulse wargame covering the 1916 Easter Rising and the 1922 Battle of Dublin - both part of the Irish War of Independence. One player controls Irish rebels and the other controls the British government. The Irish must capture key government buildings and the British must regain control of the city, block by block. This game looks terrific in the photos! This is a large PNP project with 3 counter sheets and a nine page map.
The free PNP files for the full game are available in the File Section on the game's BGG page.

Viva La Revolution! with design and art by Edward Farren
Viva La Revolution! is a 1 to 2 player game. This is an abstract wargame set in a fictional South American country. One player controls the government and the other rebels seeking to do a coup. If the rebels manage to take control, the players switch roles for the next game. The PNP file is 19 pages and contain all the boards, maps, and counters needed to play. This draws inspiration from some excellent other games so I'm very excited about it!
The free PNP files for the full game are available in the File Section on the game's BGG page.

Wildfire Rescue! with design and art by Karl Juhlke
Wildfire Rescue! is a 2 to 4 player game. You are park rangers who must battle a forest fire in order to rescue campers. The forest is randomly generated and you will need special tools to make it through the different terrains. The fire spreads through a random die roll at the end of each turn. The PNP file includes a sheet of cards and double sided tiles. I kind of love the simple artwork in this!
The free PNP files for the full game are available in the File Section on the game's BGG page.

Apothecary designed by Thomas Wells with art by Meredith Wells
Apothecary is a 2 to 4 player game. In this game, you are playing as medieval herbalists who have come to a small town to cure the sick. You may take two different approaches - actually work to collect the proper herbs to do your job, or function as a snake-oil salesman. But be careful, if you commit too much fraud and they will kick you out of town. The PNP file includes a large board and several individual cards.
The free PNP files for the full game are available in the File Section on the game's BGG page.

Dice Phalanx! designed by Hunter Fox
Dice Phalanx! is a 2 player game. This is a wargame played entirely with dice. The dice are the units and can be arranged into formations. Values are compared as players try to break up their opponent's army. There are no PNP components to craft - just dice!
The free PNP files for the full game are available in the File Section on the game's BGG page.

The Dark with design and art by Simeon Smith
The Dark is a 1 to 7 player game. Players in the game are adventurers exploring a dungeon. Each character has unique abilities and traits. One player lays out the dungeon cards and the others explore. For each torch an adventurer can light, he or she gains a victory point. The game includes 12 pages of cards.
The free PNP files for the black and white version are available in the Web Links section of the game's BGG page.

Image credit: Chris Hansen (composite image from game files)

Tempus Imperium with design and art by Chris Anderson
Tempus Imperium is a solitaire game. This is a roll-and-write style game, but instead of using dice - the game use the date and the current time to generate events. In the game, you are building roads and defeating enemies in order to collect the most gold. The game is printed on a single sheet.

Tempus Quest Episode 0: Some Re-Assembly Required designed by Chris Anderson with art by Robin Gibson

Shitty City Lights Committee with design and art by Jake Staines

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the PNP News and the first post of 2019! (Or at least the first post covering games released in 2019.)

First off, I wanted to announce that Print and Play Games News is now on Twitter. It may be slightly redundant if you're already subscribed to the blog on BGG, but I thought it could be fun nonetheless.
@PNPGamesNews
I'd like to periodically cycle through my banner pictures to highlight different PNP games. I have lots of games that I photographed to use, but if you'd like me to feature your game, please send me a geekmail. (You need to own the copyright or have permission of the copyright owner to request that.)

Before we get to the news, I also wanted to talk briefly about one of my other interests (it can't be games all the time). I volunteer at a school to teach children the basics of coding and introductory robotics. I write most of my own lesson plans and a few other teachers have asked if they could use them. So I've created a new blog where I'll be posting those lesson plans but also just posting my ideas and experiences with various technologies. There isn't a ton there yet since it's still fairly new, but I'm hoping it grows into something fun. It may be a little bit niche at times (i.e. my last post was on programming my high school graphing calculator) but hopefully others occasionally find the content interesting.

I have also created a Twitter account for the blog as well.

I've posted a Paper Circuit Valentines Card for kids, a project for the Makey Makey, and some comparisons of Scratch and Snap!

2019 54-Card Game Design Contest Discussion Thread
This contest limits games to only a deck of cards with no other components. It's a very cool design challenge. If you'd like to join in the conversation to help shape the future on the contest, please join in the discussion thread.

Current Contests
2019 9 Card Game Print and Play Design Contest
This is the fourth annual contest dedicated to games that are contained entirely on 9 cards and a few common gaming items. This is my first year hosting the contest. The contest is accepting entries until March 03, 2019. This is always a lot of fun and the design limitations generate some really innovative ideas. Also, thanks to the small size, all of the games are really easy to print and assemble.

2019 Two-Player Design Contest
This is the seventh annual contest focused on two-player games. If you primarily play games with a significant other, this is the contest for you. You may enter games in this contest until February 14, 2019 (appropriately for the contest - Valentine's Day!) This contest always generates some really great stuff.

Completed Contests
2018 Mint Tin
This annual contest focuses on games small enough to fit into an Altoids tin. It wrapped up earlier this month and winners were announced on Feb 07. The winning game was Pack It Tin by Rob Sparks.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the PNP News!

This post wraps up the newly released and updated games from the end of the year. It also includes information on several PNP design contests currently happening now and coming soon.

I will be revisiting 2018 in an upcoming post. I think I missed a few games that were released during the summer (I had an insane summer and fell behind) so I'll be checking over my saved links to make sure nothing is left out.

I also have a long list of games that I've saved to follow up on. These are games that are labeled as PNP on BGG, but as far as I can tell, the designer never released files for the game. I'll be going through the list again to see if there's been any updates to any of those games. Hopefully some of those designers have been able to finish up those games.

Let's jump into the news with the PNP Contests!

Hello and welcome to the PNP News!

I'm sorry for another long gap between posts. I've had an insanely busy few months at work. There was an emergency project that ate up every second of free time that I had. We finally finished got everything wrapped up though so I'm excited to get back to the world of PNP games.

This post has many of the new, updated, and resigned games from September and October - but almost certainly not all of them. I still need to go back through my links and check for anything I missed, which I'll do in the coming days. (There's still several games from the summer months that I need to catch up on too.) Even though I know I don't have every game, I wanted to get this post out now because it was getting pretty long. As usual, I'll do my catch up posts in chunks.

I'll post in a day or two with information about design contests and current Kickstarters, but in this post I'll just be covering the regularly released PNP games. There are tons of very cool games in this post - many of which do not even require crafting - so I'm sure that everyone will be able to find something they'll enjoy.

I have two new 9 Card Games: 300 Spartans and Franky's 1st Christmas

Where has time time gone? It seems like I just finished a big catch-up post and now here I am starting another one. Sorry for the long delay but thank you all for your patience. As usual, life is busy - at home, at work, and on BGG.

*** Skip this section if you aren't interested in my contest programming escapades ***

As many readers know, in addition to this blog, I also host several PNP design contests here on BGG. I really enjoy this, but I've been feeling recently like the overhead of managing the contest has gotten kind of overwhelmed with the administrative tasks as the contests have grown in popularity. I've spent hours updating Entries List, categories, manually assigning volunteer playtesters, and writing giant voting forms and each year brings more entries than the year before. (I'm not complaining about that, I'm thrilled to see so many people enjoying the contest!) It was getting unfeasible to keep track of all the changes happening in the game threads and I felt it was distracting me from actually playing the games.

So I had the "brilliant" idea to create a small website to automate some of the administrative tasks, such as generating the Entries List and creating voting forms. I thought, "How hard could it be?" and got to work. Unfortunately, I didn't know much about website design (the last site I built was a static page in the HTML 3 days). So I jumped over to W3Schools, did the PHP lessons and got to work building a dynamic site.

I thought I would just need a few forms and a few pages of output. However, the site quickly grew beyond my initial ideas - early users had tons of great ideas and I'm still not finished building everything I want for it. I should have known that coding projects are never small, but I'm glad I underestimated it at first. If I had known how much work it would be, I'm not sure it would have started - so I'm glad I didn't know that. The site isn't much to look at, but I'm proud of it. Outside of the time spent on the thousands of lines of code I've written, it has already saved me a lot of time. I will be using it for all future contests that I host.

You can check it out below.
Game Design Contest Resource (GDCR)
There's also a GDCR Guild here on BGG where you can make suggestions, report bugs, and ask questions.

By the way, I'm thinking of making an extension to the site where PNP designers can directly submit games that they'd like to see on this blog. That's probably a few months down the road but I think it could be useful to the community and help me get content out on a faster basis.

*** We now resume our regularly scheduled PNP News ***

You may have noticed that the last post ended on April 30, yet this one covers July. There isn't a particular reason for that, it is just the way things worked out this month. I've got a list of all the games from May and June which I'll be adding as soon as I can. I've got a ton to catch up on, but don't worry, I have it all backed up in Excel, I just need to type up the entries.

In the mean time, please enjoy these awesome games which were released (roughly) in the last month.

Hello everyone! Welcome to the PNP News! This is a smaller post, but it has a lot of big updates, in terms of both new games and under the hood improvements to the blog. There are less games than normal in this post because I wanted to make sure everyone got the links to these Kickstarter games before their campaigns ended. Also, I was testing out the new back-end for the blog and decided to just post what I had.

As usual, I've added images for games that had none so that you can get a sense of what the game is like. There are still a few images stuck in geekmod, but hopefully they get approved soon.

There will be lots more games coming soon!

In other news, there are now 248 people who own the PNP News microbadge.
Print and Play Games News fan
I'd love to see that number hit 250. (That doesn't seem like too lofty of a goal.) If you enjoy the blog and don't have the badge already, please consider adding it your microbadge collection. If you can't afford it, I will chip in the 8 geekgold. Just comment below and I'll give you the geekgold as a tip.

PNP News Under-the-Hood Updates

This gets a little bit technical and doesn't actually have any game updates, so feel free to skip if you're not interested.

Up to this point, I created this blog by copying info into a spreadsheet. Game name, game link, designer and artist names, designer and artist links, file links, etc. Then, I wrote formulas to extract the ids from the links and put it into the BGG format. This was easier than writing everything by hand but still fairly time consuming. I have used that same spreadsheet with very little modification to create the entries for the hundreds of games that have been listed in this blog.

I have recently been working on a new way of tracking game entries in the PNP Contests that I host. I was working on the BGG XMLAPI and realized that it could really be useful in the PNP News as well. This week I took some time to rewrite it using the ImportXML feature of Google Docs. Now, I just copy in the link of the game I want to add and formulas create an XMLAPI link which is then used to auto-populate all of the ids and names. I think there are still a few kinks to work out, but so far it's been really nice. I just put in the game, choose a picture, and write a short description. All of the formatting is automatically done.

It feels a little funny to be using the XMLAPI to pull data out of BGG just to stick it right back into BGG, but life is crazy sometimes.

Most of the changes are behind the scenes and won't be visible to you. The biggest change is that I've added a link that will take you directly to where you can get the files from the BGG page. For example, I can now link you directly to the file section for Cats vs Dogs instead of sending you to the game page and making you click the Files tab. Or, I can send you directly to the Web Links section of St Crispin's Day. Hopefully this makes it a little easier for everyone to find the files they need.

I've gone through and tested everything but it's possible I may have missed something. If you notice anything odd or a link that doesn't work, please let me know so I can investigate. Thank you!

TLDR: I used to do a lot of copying and pasting from BGG to create this blog. I wrote some code to do all the copy and pasting for me. Also, the entries will now link directly to where you get the files.
