Bobby's Games

I will be posting monthly recaps of my gaming which I used to do in GeekLists, but it has been a long, long time since that was he norm. I'll also be commenting on games on occasion, though I can tell you that I will be behind the curve because I just don't get to play the new games as soon as some people do.

Month two of 2019.

This month, the lowest rated games I played are both rated a ‘5’: One of them new and one familiar. The highest rated games I played were four that I have rated a ‘9’.

In February, I played 29 different games a total of 51 times recorded no expansion plays. Eight of the games were new to me and I played 10 of the games in January.

Here is what I played during February:

1st & Roll
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 6
Owned: No

It’s okay. I thought the turnovers felt excessive, but couldn’t think of a better way to handle it. Mike hates the Patriots, but lost to me 13-3, like the Rams lost to the world champs a few days earlier.

6 Nimmt!
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 9/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

This wasn’t a good game for me, but it was good for Michael and bad for Jon. Really, exceptionally, and pretty much intentionally bad at the end.

Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2019
My Rating: 6
Owned: No

I sold my copy to Nick and Allison and Mike told me he sold his as well.

Big Book of Madness
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2018
My Rating: 5
Owned: No

We lost.

Brass (Lancashire)
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2008
My Rating: 6
Owned: Yes

I still am not a huge fan, though it is a good game. I don’t like the new design of the board, but the new counters are better-designed than the original. Since it has been so long since I played the original printing and I only played it once.

Carcassonne: Wheel of Fortune
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 7/2011
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

It was a blast playing this, or any version of Carcassonne, again. It’s too bad there was never an expansion giving us the first two expansions with the wheel mechanism.

Doppelt so clever
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Three new players and me, who had played dozens of time on the phone, and I easily won. My score wasn’t great and I suspect others will catch up when they have a couple of games under their belts.

Dream Home
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

I taught this to Justin, and he, Eric, and I played. Eric ended up scoring the best without having any bathrooms. Amazing…

Flamme Rouge
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: No

I finished first and fourth, which is not a bad spread.

Game, The
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 1/2019
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Two games with Michael and Justin that both went poorly. Drawing the 51 as the last card of the deck can be disheartening.

Kanagawa
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 6
Owned: No

A fun drafting game. It’s not something I am likely to buy, but I am happy play. Winning the first game didn’t impact that at all.

Maximum Apocalypse
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

This is a cooperative scenario-based game that like, Sentinels of the Multiverse, uses individual character decks. Unlike SotM, if it is not tedious, it flows quickly, and it is a lot of fun. It also has exploration as well as a search/scavenge mechanism like the Zombicide of games.

I rated it a seven after one play, but I jumped in and ordered a complete set that includes all the expansions and I bumped it up to an 8 after a couple more plays. I think it could settle in as a nine or the BGG scale.

Mystery Rummy: Al Capone and the Chicago Underworld
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2019
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

The winning streak continues…

On Tour
Times Played: 11
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

My copy arrived! We played three times the first Saturday and a whole lot more in the later weeks.

It’s as painful a game as I thought it might be, and that is a good thing.

Quacks of Quedlinburg
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 6
Owned: No

I thought this was okay, but part of the problem I had was during the first part of the game I was exploding my potion at seven, instead of greater than seven. We’ll see what I think about it after another play or two.

Quest for El Dorado
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2019
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Michael was all set to buy this, then we played the Swamplands advanced map. Near the end, I jumped just in front of Michael and stopped at a choke point on map "O" until I drew what I needed to win. I knew he had a better deck than me, so I stayed in place. If he moves to get around the blocking move, I would win because I could easily make the last dash in two turns.

While I was setting up for the win, Allison and Nick were approaching the other path. I ended up with the win just before Allison was going to make her last run. Michael decided not get the game and I decided that mini-map "O" will never be used again.

Qwantum
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

I picked this up because Qwinto and Qwixx are both fun and skimming the rules made me think I would enjoy it, and I do like it.

Qwinto
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 1/2019
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

It’s getting close to needing to buy a new set. Ahh, English rules.

Ra: The Dice Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 12/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Mike won this game. Monuments, monuments, monuments!

Roll to the Top!
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 1/2019
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

One of these was my first play on the “Heydar Center” map. So far, all the tricky layouts are awesome. The next one I need to try is the multi-colored one.

Saint Malo
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2019
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Hey, I only took two cannon hits from the pirates and Mike took four, and that was the difference in the game.

Samurai Spirit
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 5
Owned: No

Justin taught this and said it would be better with more, but the mechanism isn’t something I enjoy all that much.

Shadows of Brimstone
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 1/2019
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

I built the figures from the Forbidden Fortress box as well as the Belly of the Beast other world. We played a one-off scenario at the Game Depot one Saturday, with the Assassin, Monk, and Sorcerer. It was a bad trio and we were wiped by a few of the BoB variation of the Acidic Tentacles, bunch of Bone Eaters, and a Gastral Tyrant. It wasn't even close. I'm curious if the Samurai Warrior would be better with any two of those as a trio, or if three characters is a bad number with the heroes in that box.

I thought about taking the Sumo over the Sorcerer and wondered if having that four combat and the 20 health would have made up for the lower healths?

Back at Mike's, playing in the Old West, someone (me) lost our character sheets from the campaign, so we started a new one. I’m playing the Trederran Veteran, Mike is playing the Bandido, Damian is breaking in the Darkstone Shaman, and Jerry is playing the Jargono Native. We played “For a Few Dark Stone More” and we just ran out of time. We made it through about 15 rooms and at least seven of them were corridors. Mike set up the online deck with all the Mine cards, including all the corridors. When I am playing with my set, I set up with fewer corridors.

Terraforming Mars
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2019
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

I taught this to Eric using the beginner rules and he did okay, but my experience led me to an easy victory at the end.

Thunderstone Quest
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 12/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

The first game was using Michael’s set and we were going through the scenarios. I picked the wrong one because of the way the game plays are listed on BGG and we played the same one we played last time. Oh, well.

Valeria: Card Kingdoms
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

The first game was before the latest expansion, Shadowvale, made it to the house. After that, I mixed in the cards from the expansion.

I also ordered the big box so there would be room for everything sleeved with room for more expansions.

Würfel Bohnanza
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2018

Justin hadn’t played, so I taught it and Eric won it. Stupid dice.

Zombicide: Black Plague
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

Eric wanted to learn how to play so he, Michael, and I played using mostly the heroes from the original box and played the first scenario. It’s an easy one on four map boards and we won.

The year ended quietly on the last Saturday of the month as many regulars are out of town.

This month, the lowest rated games I played were two new ones I rated a ‘6’ and the highest rated games I played were four rated a ‘9’.

In December, I played 29 different games a total of 50 times and seven expansions accounted for 10 of the monthly recorded plays. Three of the games and one of the expansions were new to me, and I played 11 of the games and two of the expansions in November.

Here is what I played during December:

51st State: Master Set
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

My Merchants against Jon’s New Yorkers. Jon jumped out to a big lead, but I finished with a lot of cards and a lot of brick and was able to score just enough points to pass him.

7 Wonders
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 7/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Expansion Played: Armada.

I really don’t know if I like what the expansion adds to the game. We’ll have to see after a couple more plays. Others who have played seem to like it more.

Ancestree
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 6/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

I realized I hadn’t brought this along in a while, and it was a perfect filler when someone needed to make a call that would take a few minutes. The down side? It ended in a tie. Luckily, we played again the following week and we ended with a winner.

Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra
Times Played: 6
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 6
Owned: Yes

Different from Azul after the point of selecting the tiles, while still maintaining that feeling of being in the same family of games.

After six plays, I can say I definitely prefer the original game. The freedom of being able to take many more tiles of a color before scoring them makes for some meaner game player and can be just frustrating, and not in a good way.

Basari
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

It seemed obvious to me that I was in a bad spot after the first scoring, and my negative expectations proved true.

Castles of Burgundy: The Dice Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 9/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Another sheet that Nico laminated with his new laminator. Instead of dry-erase markers, he uses wet-erase when the sheets need a fine point, like these need.

Clank!
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 10/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Expansion Played: Gold and Silk.

Another game on the Spider Queen’s Lair side of the board, this time it was with Mike’s set and I explained the rules. I was knocked out just shy of the exit and Mike won. I would have pulled out the win if I had gotten out of the dungeon and it was a terrific, right ending.

At this point, I believe this is the best expansion and I really want to try the Dwarf side. The boards add some nice rules and challenges without adding cards to the deck. Because of the size of the deck and the few number of cards in the expansions, the cards can sometimes not come into play when playing on one of the larger expansions.

Coimbra
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: No

I couldn’t figure out what Michael was doing by making some of the choices he made, but it turns out that there were too many rules in the point salad and he didn’t comprehend some of the end-game scoring. He wasn’t just targeting my plans, which I wouldn’t put past him. Next time, I expect he will be playing to win now he knows everything.

Drop It
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

I looked good initially and failed at the end. I still suck at this.

Endeavor
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 10/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: No

I knew I was going to go land-based and work on dominating Europe. Rob also committed to doing the same and Jon did as well. Unfortunately for Jon, he was player five of five and was pushed out of Europe. I stayed focused on Europe and was late to the exploration party. I kept my tendrils limited. I didn’t help open Africa, but after making a connection, I completely dominated the land and held a good part of the far east. The last round had a rush in India and I made enough contacts to score some extra points for the cross-region connections.

I believe I won handily, I believe, by dominating in a couple of places and staying focused in certain areas while everyone else was scattered all over the world.

Game, The
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

A terrible loss and a slightly less-worse loss.

High Score
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 6/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Yeah, I rolled the dice.

Yeah, probability was thrown out the window.

Yeah, a lot of whiney beaches were sitting at the table.

Kribbeln
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Rolling dice. Scoring points. This needs some laminated sheets from Nico.

Luxor
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 6
Owned: No

It’s light and fun, but definitely something I wouldn’t buy. That being said, I would play this when Mike wants to bring it out.

Mystery Rummy: Al Capone and the Chicago Underworld
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 10/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

A close game, but my winning streak continues.

Pandemic: Fall of Rome
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7
Owned: No

A good variation of the Pandemic system, but not great.

After playing with four players, I am not sure the game is winnable with that many players on the standard difficulty.

Power Grid
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2017
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

Expansions Played: We played on the Benelux map.

Benelux is an awesome map for three players. I was able to get the best plants early on and had the room to expand and end the game when the others couldn’t power the 17 cities.

Qwinto
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

If we keep playing this, I will need to buy a new set. It’s worth it.

Ra: The Dice Game
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 10/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Once at Mike’s and I also taught the game to Brian on Saturday morning while we were waiting for others to arrive.

Railroad Ink
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

The first game was with the Lakes expansion and this one makes the game easier by allowing route connections by ferries through the bodies of water. Easier does not mean easy, though. The lakes must be still be placed properly and the streets and roads properly connected to them. Game two was a teaching game for Rob and we followed up on that using the Rivers. The last time was just using the base game against Mike and that was a close one as well.

Roll Player
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Expansion Played: Monsters & Minions.

Justin broke out his copy and he, Michael, and I played. I made the mistake of buying armor, especially chain armor, when there were so many cards removed from the deck. In the end, I still managed to get four pieces so the effort wasn’t a waste. It was the closest I remember coming to completing all the characteristic goals: all I needed was a Strength action to flip a “1” to a “6” and it would have happened.

Roll Through the Ages
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Maybe the lowest scoring game we’ve played. I won with 40 points including getting zero disasters. (We play that all monuments are collective built and someone has five developments.)

It was just some odd rolling, and no one built any of the big developments that gave bonus points. Really fun.

Roll to the Top!
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 7/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

With the laminated/dry erase edition coming, I finally broke out the limited sheets and we played once on the Cube House and once on the Matterhorn. Later in the month we played on the Eiffel Tower.

Saint Petersburg
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 12/2015
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Michael brought this one out and he, Nico, and I played.

Nico had first pick of buildings and decided to grab the Potjomkin’s Village instead of the Observatory, which meant I was able to grab it on the first turn. Nice...

Shadows of Brimstone
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

We played the “Terror in the Night” scenario and it was difficult, mostly because we were swamped on the entrance tile. We did manage to break through and all ended up at third level by the end of the mission. A really lucky roll at the Doc’s Office got rid of both my injuries and we are, for the first time since the first delve into the mines, healthy and well-equipped.

Terraforming Mars
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

Expansions Played: Hellas & Elysium, Prelude, and the Corporate Era (unrecorded) for both games, and Colonies for one of them.

In the second game we played on the Elysium map and I really wished it had been on the base game map. My corporation was Tharsis (place a city as your first action) and I had two Prelude cards that both placed cities. Just as I started to ramp up my production of plants, I received the Protected Habitats card, making my plants and animals from being removed, and I cruised to an easy victory.

A couple of others had some awesome synergy with their Prelude cards and Corporations. I barely touched the colonies, being the ultimate settler of Mars, proper.

Thunderstone Quest
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 11/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Two games using Michael’s set. We are playing through the scenario book again so Michael can open up the packs and experience all the cards himself.

Thurn and Taxis
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

It got two plays in 2018 and this, the second, was not a good game for me. None of the cards fell my way and no matter what I wanted to do, I failed. I love this game.

Turkey and games. That's it. That's all I got.

This month, the lowest rated game I played was a ‘7’ and the highest rated game I played is a ‘9’.

In November, I played 32 different games a total of 62 times and 11 expansions and accounted 18 more monthly recorded plays. Two of the games and two of the expansions were new to me, and I played 14 of the games and four of the expansions in October.

Here is what I played during November:

51st State: Master Set
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 7/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Expansion Played: Scavengers for one of the games.

The first play was with two players. It started off slow, but we ramped up after a couple of quick rounds and I was able to pull out a victory.

The second play was also against Nico and we used the Scavengers expansion. It was my first time playing with it and I liked it, though I think I still prefer the New Era cards.

Airships
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2011
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Seven years since we played this, and it was fun to get it played again. I forgot the game’s cadence and did not do well, while Mike and Damian did better, with Mike winning by a fair margin.

Azul
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: 10/2018
My Rating: 8

Patty loves this, so several of the plays were because it gave me the chance to play a game with her or Dave and they were all fun.

Clank! In! Space!

Expansion Played: Apocalypse!.

Running in and getting out fast! That’s the ticket and I punched mine for first place!

Coimbra
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 10/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: No

This time it was just Nico and I. We were both a little rusty after playing this several weeks ago. I remebered that end-game scoring (the voyages at the bottom of the board) would be important. I ended up funding all of them and had three end-game scoring cards, that I was able to score twice during the last round because one of the stops on the road let someone visiting it score thair end-game cards. I lapped Nico’s score.

Not bad as a two-player game. Still, I am glad I ended up not backing it on Kickstarter.

Two games at Mike’s with the OnFire cards. We won the first one and lost the second.

My Rating: 8

Three games in person and I played a whole bunch on the phone.

Istanbul: The Dice Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 10/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

This is one time when getting the extra dice meant the win. I had two extra dice before Mike got one, and then my next turn I got the third one. Mike still managed to get five rubies to my six, so the game could have still gone his way.

Keltis: Das Würfelspiel
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

This game saw a lot of rolls with four and five of the same face. Mike rolled many more of these than I did and he won.

Kribbeln
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 9/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Jerry hadn’t played this and, since Mike had asked me to bring this along, we pulled it out and played.

Majesty: For the Realm
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

I still really like this game, but I don’t see bringing it along all that often, so it might go on my for sale pile.

Noch mal!
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 10/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Expansion Played: The Zusatzblock III scoring pad.

Mike and I played and I had really good luck in my placements and the following rolls were fairly kind to me and I dominated in the end score.

Pandemic
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 1/2017
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Expansion Played: On the Brink.

We played twice, using my classic set.

Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Mike played the Hunter and I was the Doctor. All started off well, but we discarded too many Dunwich cards. Near the end, we were in trouble, but I met Mike at the gate location in Dunwich and passed him three cards. There were four cards left in the draw pile and one was a Secrets card. If that was drawn, we would have lost. If not, we would win. We won. It was as close as it could be.

This is still a great take on the Pandemic mechanism and a lot of fun.

Quests of Valeria
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2017
My Rating: 8

I had this packed in the bag for a few weeks before it was played, but it was fun. Michael handily beat Mike, Jon, and I by rushing through some low-value quests.

Qwinto
Times Played: 3

It’s now out in the states and still getting playings.

Qwixx

Wow, it had been over a year since we played this. All the other roll and write games have bumped this off the front burner.

Race for the Galaxy

Expansion Played: The Gathering Storm and Rebel vs. Imperium.

Two games against Michael. It was a split.

I’m logging plays of the game under this version and plays of the expansions are not logged.

I played this nine times the first two days: four times on Friday (once with the River) and five times on Saturday (Lava and Meteor once each). All six who played it like it and I am glad I bought both versions right away since it looks like the first printing sold out.

We played a two-player game and rolled. During the first round we saved 11 uninfected and added just one infected to the deck The next two rounds went quickly and the last round was just revealing everyone and lining up the good guys to evacuate.

I am still unsure about the luck in the game, but it is fun. I wonder if I would have the same reservations if it didn’t bring the stink of Century: Spice Road with it?

Mission two was the “Seal the Void Gate” scenario and we had a very hard time of it. So hard, in fact, we lost the mission at the end fight.

Mission three was on the Derelict Ship, and was it tough. It was almost as hard as the last one, in part because we didn’t have the town stay to fix things up, and we had several injuries, madnesses, and mutations occur during the romp. We did win and were able to go to town, but there was no place to heal the injuries, though the Doc, who has two of his own, was able to clear one off during the mission and one during the town stay.

Expansions Played: Prelude & Venus Next for one game and Colonies for the other two playings.

The first one was with four players, on one planet; well, two planets. Three planets if you count Earth. Oh, never mind!

The next time was the first with Colonies (oh, joy, more planets!) against Nico. It was a close game, but I was able to maneuver past Nico to score first in more awards and had one more milestone than Nico. I completely misplayed one of the new cards, the zoo in Mars, and was pumping animals on it, using the moon colony that added animals, and I thought it was scoring a VP for each animal. Instead, it was worth only 1 VP and I was scoring money during the game when taking the action on the card. Oops, remember to read the cards carefully, folks.

Game three was against Nico, Michael, and Harrison with Colonies. This was one of those games where I felt nothing was developing and I ended up winning by a fair amount at the end. Some of it was pure luck. For example, Michael funded the Banker award the turn I drew Zeppelins and I already had two cards that would bump my M€ production by ten. I barely used the colonies, but got some benefit from them. The others generally spent more time using the colonies, often beating me by a short bit before I traded somewhere.

Colonies is a winner!

Mike pulled this out one Thursday and mike won when I thought I was doing better than I was.

We haven’t played with the Agents expansion in a while. I think it is okay, but it doesn't add enough to the game to make it worth pulling out.

I actually won this. I managed to get some high dollar cards early on and managed to win just enough to pull off the win.

Three times in a month is a severe drop off. I suspect that Railroad Ink took several plays away from this.

Zombicide: Black Plague

Expansion Played: Wulfsburg.

We played the “Blood Red” scenario at Mike’s with five players. We quickly lost the first game, the second was almost as fast a loss, the third was a little more competitive, and finally lost the last one. It’s a brutal scenario!

September fizzled out and that lead to a slow October. I missed a couple of Thursdays and Fridays and Mike had to cancel a couple, so the total number of games played was lower than most months. I feel like much of my comments are also sparse, so sorry about that.

This month, the lowest rated game I played is a newly-dropped ‘5’ and the highest rated game I played is a ‘9’. There was no medieval Zombicide appearance.

In October, I played 24 different games a total of 40 times and four expansions were played once each and accounted for four of the monthly recorded plays. Three of the games and one of the expansions were new to me, and I played 13 of the games and three of the expansions in September.

Here is what I played during October:

10 Days in Africa
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2015

Mike pulled this out and we played. I was one card away from winning -- any orange country would do the trick. I didn’t get it in time.

Expansion Played: Gold and Silk.

Michael bought the expansion and we played on the Spider Queen’s Lair side of the board. I really liked the additional rules and the rules for the dwarf side look fun as well.

Expansion Played: Apocalypse!.

We played the “Interdimensional Monsters” scheme and it didn’t make too much of an impact because there just weren’t many alien attacks.

Nico bought it because he likes dice drafting games and this one qualifies. It’s a point salad with a lot of little rules that plays fairly simply once you get the rules down. I liked it, but it is one of those games I am not likely to buy because, for me, the payoff is not worth the complexity of the game explanation. I’ll play it again should Nico suggest it.

Endeavor

Before my blogging monthly games played I played this and tracked it on a geeklist of 2/2010 plays. I said, “Fun game. I don’t know if it will have long-term legs, but I could see playing this a few times in the near future and enjoying it.” I now see this has a separate entry in the BGG database as Endeavor: Age of Sail.

This play of the new, way over-produced, edition pretty much reinforces that feeling.

Chris from St. Louis was visiting and Patty suggested he play a game or two with us. We gave him the choice of serious pain, or even more pain. We went with this one and won easily.

Easily? Yes. Incredibly easy. It made liars of us.

Next up, Raxxon. That would cause pain. Right?

The second game was with Rob, and we had another successful game, but it was close and painful.

We were going to play Ganz schön clever but, while I was away getting a drink, Mike M. told Cale that I was too likely to win it so they pulled out this instead. Sometimes, the myth of dice loving someone gets in the heads of some people.

Oh, and I won this as well.

Nico pulled this out and Jon joined us. Jon hadn’t played before.

Even though he had the deluxe edition, Nico bought the BGG upgrade tokens and we used them. They are nice, but I have some issues with the player discs. Unlike the ones in the game which have the player color on the face, these are molded in the player colors. I was playing black and Jon had blue, and I kept thinking that one of my four starter workers was the black worker (which has dark gray discs) and Jon retired his blue worker by mistake.

Nico hadn’t played this and had a few minutes while waiting for his wife to pick him up, so I explained it to him and we started, hoping to finish. We did finish. I rolled a 17 to start and was able to score the 17 for both the color and the pentagram. It was a great game for me, but not so much for Nico.

I got in three more games this month. The English release made it to my FLGS and others have picked it up.

After beating The Game we taught this to Chris. Round one had us clearing 20 of the 30 uninfected. Round two had us clearing the final ten.

It’s pretty good, but it might suffer from the same issue as Century: Spice Road with random goals appearing at random times. So far, it has been good, but I could see it sucking totally with a bad card draw.

San Juan

My Rating: 5

Warning! Rating plummet alert.

The Guild Hall Certainty has finally caused me to realize I no longer need to play this ever again. What changed? I’ve played it a lot on the iPhone and it just highlights that the easiest and most likely way to win is the Guild Hall strategy. I almost pulled a win by going with a last-minute monument strategy, but I never saw one of the six-pointers which made the strategy work.

Shadows of Brimstone
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 7/2018

After we played back in July, Mike pretty much said he didn’t want to deal with the game anymore because of all the card stacks and the set-up required.

Later on he thought about replacing the cards with some card game app/database on the iPad. Our friend Rob programmed the set-up and Mike scanned in all the cards. Yes, all of them. Every. Single. One.

So we started again since I didn’t record everyone’s stuff. I was the only one that changed characters and we had my Frontier Doc, a Wandering Samurai, a Rancher, and a U.S. Marshal and started with “For a Few Dark Stone More.”

All went well and we saw the Tribal Ghost Warriors for the first time and they were a nice enemy that was neither too difficult or too easy.

Terraforming Mars

Expansions Played: Prelude, Venus Next, and the Corporate Era (unrecorded).

I played the BGG user-created Arcadian Communities corp and Michael whined about the spaces I saved on the board and complained I blocked him from being able to score points. I knew he would win when this started, because that is the way these things occur.

He did win. Vindication, baby!

I’m leaning towards removing either the Venus Next or Corporate Era cards from now on. The last few games, Venus was completely ignored by the players and I suspect that is because so few of the cards are Venus-related.

A random set-up with Jon. He started up hitting the dungeon more often than I as his deck was faster than mine, but I managed to get a little more power and was able to delve deeper in the dungeon than him and that made the difference in the end, though the scores were close.

September fizzled as the store was booked solid on the last Saturday and that Friday was also a no-play day. Still, it was a fairly busy month.

This month, the lowest rated game I played is rated ‘5’ and the highest rated game I played is a ‘9’.

In September, I played 36 different games a total of 51 times and seven expansions accounted for 10 of the recorded game plays for the month. Four of the games and one of the expansions were new to me, and I played 13 of the games and two of the expansions in August.

Here is what I played during September:

6 Nimmt!
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 7/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Michael and I were near the lead going into the last couple of hands. There was a board with only one row that had safe spots and we both played as high as we could to avoid taking it. I had the 66. He had the 65, which let him place the fifth card in the row and caused me to take a lot of points.

A couple of weeks later, game two had a very high winning score with Michael also winning that one.

Azul
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

This was a four-player game. Early on, I ended up with six negative points when I was forced to grab a bunch of teal tiles. I thought I was doomed, but I ended up winning because Harrison took even more negative points one round, Thomas was unable to connect his tiles for scoring, and Ian was new to the game (but still was a close second).

Black Orchestra
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: No

Nick also picked this up and we played with five. It was less fun with five but I was happy being the one not getting much done and shepherding the others through their first game. Things didn’t seem to be going well for us and we failed at an attempt, but the assassin and plot were not detected. We then pulled together a second attempt in the sixth stage and killed the dictator.

Broom Service: The Card Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 7/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

I didn’t get multiples of any of the potions in the lower range of the values, and none of the bonuses matched the potions of which I had a good mix. I still almost pulled out a win but Michael got two of the three bonuses and won.

Castles of Burgundy: The Dice Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

Mike and I played this one Thursday evening and he scored exactly 17 each round. I doubt he could purposely do that if he planned.

Clank! In! Space!

Expansion Played: Apocalypse!.

This worked like I thought it would with the expansion. We played the “Homicidal AI” scheme.

Game two with the expansion was using the second level one scheme, the “Time Travel Paradox.”

The low level schemes didn’t really impact the game too much, but they were a good learning experience. I want to play through all of them and then I will probably pick a random one, though I could see skipping the level one schemes in the future.

Commands & Colors Tricorne: The American Revolution
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 12/2017
My Rating: 8
Owned: No

June 17, 1775. Bunker Hill, MA.

The British had many advantages, but their morale failures put them in a bad position. At the end, it was a steep hole and they fell just short when they made the final push to rout the rebels.

Mike won with the Colonial forces, 6-5.

Dragon Castle
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 6/2018
My Rating: 7
Owned: No

We played at the Game Depot and we used the Dragon and Spirit cards. They didn’t change the game too much, but they were interesting.

Einfach Genial
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 7/2018
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

I taught Allison, Nick, and Rob how to play this. As newbies, they didn’t do much blocking and I was able to shut them mostly out of a color and scored enough in the others and won.

Elder Sign
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2017
My Rating: 8

Three of the four of us lost a character and the game was not going our way. In other words, we got Shubbed.

Fast Flowing Forest Fellers
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/2013
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

It was one of Michael’s games in his car that played well with five, so we played.

I sucked.

Still fun.

Flamme Rouge
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 7/2018
My Rating: 7

We played Justin’s copy on the La Haute Montagne track and it was a pain. I don’t think I would use this track to teach people, or play with relatively inexperienced players.

There were three games this month I don’t have much to say about the playing(s). There’s this one...

Gizmos

Last Month Played: New to me

This is clever, though AP-prone. There is also an issue with the marbles falling off the rail and ending up under the dispenser that you might not know about being out of the ix until the game is put away.

Heckmeck am Bratwurmeck
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 8

When Mike, Damian, and I played, we had a near-perfect game. We had only two flipped-over tiles when the game ended. I’ve played the game 67 times and this is the fewest flipped tiles I remember seeing at the end of any one of them.

Istanbul: The Dice Game
Times Played: 2

Lost Cities: Rivals

Nico bought it and I went over the rules for us since I had played. I sucked, again, and Justin won.

Mystery Rummy 4: Al Capone and the Chicago Underworld
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 7/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

In the first game, I managed a shutout against Mike in one hand when completing Capone and going out. It doesn’t happen much when we play, but I did it again the first hand the second game. He wasn’t able to reciprocate and I won all three games.

Noch mal!
Times Played: 1

Expansion Played: The Zusatzblock III scoring pad.

This was my first playing using the green pad. Well, my first physical play since I have played solo games many times using the app.

Pandemic: The Cure
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/2015
My Rating: 8

Expansion Played: Experimental Meds.

Mike and lost a game because of outbreaks, which is something I haven’t seen in a long time, if ever.

Qwinto
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 7

And this one is the last one without something to say about...

Race for the Galaxy
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Expansion Played: The Gathering Storm and Rebel vs. Imperium.

One game against Michael. I started with Earth’s Lost Colony, two low-cost blue worlds, a cheap brown world that made blue goods worth more money, and some other card. I quickly drew the Free Trade Association (6-point development that is perfect for blue worlds) and cruised for the win.

Railways of Nippon
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: No

Four players. It went faster than the first game we played and it felt tight the entire game and I didn’t think I was near the lead as the game ended. I had the baron that gave me points for linking to gray cities and I managed only two points from this by the time the end-game triggered. I pulled out a slight win at the end.

The first round ended with the first four cards revealed: all Hostiles. With that bad luck, we were doomed, but we made a strong attempt to overcome the disadvantage. We ended up with 26 civilians saved when the game ended, which is not too shabby.

Roll Through the Ages: The Iron Age
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/2015
My Rating: 7

I muddled through an explanation of this since I haven’t played this in years and everyone struggled in the beginning of the game, but we got on a roll as the end-game came. I just need to remember to pull this out again soon before I forget the changes in this version again.

Space Base

Five players. I didn’t diversify, but had a pretty powerful “8” spot that gave me a fair amount of cash and a planet each time others rolled it, and with four others rolling between my turns it meant a fairly good chance of seeing it time around the table. It was a glorious game. Glorious!

Sprawlopolis
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 5

Mike picked this mini game up and taught it to me. This is more a puzzle than a game. It felt more like work and less having fun, though it might have been something I would have picked up if Christa still lived in the Valley. She would have enjoyed it.

Terraforming Mars
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 8/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Expansions Played: Prelude for both games, with Venus Next, and the Corporate Era (unrecorded) for one game.

A two-player game with Mike. He didn’t see many cards that were useful early on and I jumped out to a production lead. He caught up near the end, but tied me after he counted his card VPs, before I counted mine.

The second time was with Mike and Damian, and it was about halfway through the game before Damian played his first green card, having played a bunch of microbe and some other blue/action cards and a couple of events. He ended up with the win, which was nice to see when the new strategy wins a game.

Football season is about to start and the temps are starting to be just hot. I’ve been underwhelmed by the games I saw from GenCon and don’t have high hopes for any new games coming out.

This month, the lowest rated four games I played are rated ‘6’ and the three highest rated games played are ‘9’.

In August, I played 32 different games a total of 61 times and five expansions accounted for 12 of the recorded game plays for the month. Four of the games were new to me, and I played ten of the games and two of the expansions in July.

Here is what I played during August:

10 Days in Europe
Times Played: 9
Last Month Played: 10/2016
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Nick and I were the only ones at the store early one morning and he had brought this along, and we got in three games. Later in the day I was telling Jon what we played earlier and he asked about it, so I taught it to him and we played four games. Later in the month, we were early and Jon, Mike M. and I played a couple of games.

A four-player game. I still really like it, but it is more difficult than the others because of the lack of double-states and no oceans or rails. Maybe a few more cars, or making some of the central states double up would have eased the difficulty.

I finally had the chance to play using my recently-acquired FX Schmid version. I really need to print a copy of the rules in English for the box in case I don’t play again in such a long time.

I had a good lead on Michael and even better one on Rob going into the last round. I didn’t have many gems and decided to run around the board as fast as possible while possibly getting some majorities to Rob. I did give him four red gems for a few points. It gave him the lead and me a few more points. I was the only one who made the full lap the last round and Mike and Rob split the majorities and I won the game.

We won twice! The first game had Tom Cruise in the Chancellery with a hidden bomb! The second time was a couple of weeks later and it was a nail biter where we failed two or three plots before successfully finishing the dictator.

Expansion Played: Rome & The Barbarians.

This month we played two scenarios, and and both we won by the Romans. I played the Britons.

In the first game, I charged my chariots into the center of the Roman Front Line, trying to punch a hole in it that I could later exploit. It didn’t work as well as I hoped, but I did eliminate Julius Caesar on a 1-in-36 die roll. So while the Britons might have lost the day’s battles, they won the war by cutting off the head of the dragon.

Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 8/2017
My Rating: 6

A year and a week after I last played, I broke this out again.

The designer was too much a slave to using the fate dice and the end game suffers because of it. It also really doesn’t scale well because with two you see only nine of 20 cards and with four and five you see even fewer cards in your deck. Basically, the end game comes down to rolling dice and hoping for exceptional luck most of the time.

I still enjoy the game, but as more of an experience and puzzle. Relying on luck of the fate dice makes the end game clunky and unrewarding. If you win it was luck and if you lose, it was the most-likely outcome. Instead of using fate dice, it might have been better to come up with some other custom dice that could of come up with a cumulative number for the end-game rolls: maybe -1, 0, 0, 1, 1, 2; or something like that? But the cost of creating new dice probably would have made the game more expensive.

After the flourish of plays last year it sat on the shelf because every time I thought about dragging it out the end-game issues caused second thoughts. If the two expansion decks had not come out, it might have stayed on the shelf. I am not sure I will bring it out again any time soon.

Expansion Played: Age of Giants for both games.

Nick and I tried this out and thought it was okay.

Later in the month I played a four-player and it really doesn’t impact things too much.

The expansion is nothing special, but does add a little more depth and some “take that” to the game. I’ll continue to play using it for a few more games, though I am not sure it really adds much to the game.

The tile dispenser doesn’t work too well since the tiles don’t want to slide apart and prefer to stick together due to the finish on the tiles.

This felt like Lost Cities and Ra.

I liked it, though not a lot. The money was too easy to burn through and much of a couple of rounds I was just calling for an auction each round to force cards to be bought and speed up the game. I want to play it again as auction games can be tricky to get a handle on.

We needed something for five and this got pulled from the back room at the store and we played.

Expansions Played: Prelude for all of the games, Venus Next for one of the games, and the Corporate Era for three of them.

Creighton and I played a two-player game with Prelude and I really liked the expansion. He started off faster than I did, but my extra production of steel allowed me to catch up by using it to buy cards that let me improve my position.

We then played it with four players at Mike’s and it looked like I was running away with it, but when the final scores were calculated I ended up just a few points ahead of Mike.

Next was just Jon and I also using the Corporate Era since I thought Prelude might compensate for the boring game using that expansion. I still don’t know if I like the cards from the Corporate Era expansion because as I managed to up my steel and titanium production, Jon was able to reduce them back to zero so he up his by another point. Again, I started off slow, but I invested in a lot of cards that let me make a push at the end of the game and managed a win. Jon might have won, be he seemed focused on stopping me from getting points from upping oxygen by planting greenery. He paid a couple of times to get greenery on the board but if he would have focused on causing end game and got the oceans on the board, the game would have ended a generation or two earlier and he would have won.

Game four was against Mike and Damian and it was a tight game that Mike won.

Game five was with five players using the Corporate Era and Prelude at the Game Depot. I really thought the game would drag with five, but we blew through the game in five or six generations.

Finally, we played with three using Venus Next along with the Corporate Era and Prelude. It was an odd game because Nick cheated heavily through about the first half of the game because he was taking his starting money instead of his TR as the base income. I had wondered how he was getting so many cards out then I heard him mumble he was getting 60+ MC as his income and asked how he was doing that. Oops.

Michael also appeared to be drafting cards just so I wouldn’t get ones he thought I would want. He managed to get two of the milestones and I thought for sure he would win, but I passed him with VPs on the board.

Gaming. Summer. That’s it, that’s the list.

This month, the lowest rated game I played was a ‘5’ and the highest rated game played was a ‘9’.

In July, I played 39 different games a total of 56 times and six expansions accounted for six of the recorded game plays for the month. Five of the games were new to me, and I played 16 of the games and two of the expansions in June.

Here is what I played during July:

51st State: Master Set
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

I played the Mutants against Michael’s Merchants and Jon’s Appalachians. For much of the game, Michael was in or near the lead with me. Jon forgot something (and I don’t remember what that was) that made his game slow down and he was behind for much of the game. As end-game was triggered, I surged past Michael and won fairly easily.

Jon made what I thought was a questionable draft in the first round, I think he was drafting to stop me, and he ended up at zero points for the round and never managed to catch up. Ashley was close, but I managed to win by getting a color, two columns, and a row for bonuses.

Bohemian Villages

I thought I was doing well, but Michael’s nine farms, which was 45 coins, cemented his victory.

Broom Service: The Card Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 12/2017
My Rating: 7
Owned: Yes

I thought I was doing well. I had four 10s and 12s in my deck to start and three 14s, so I decided to focus on those. The mistake was going with the 14s because they were on two of the three bonus cards. I had initial competition for the 14s because of that and Nico jumped in on the 10s in the third round. Allison ended up winning because she got one of the goals but my being able to focus on the low numbers with minimal competition kept me near the best score.

Clank!
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 6/2018
My Rating: 8

Expansion Played: Sunken Treasures and The Mummy’s Curse each for one game.

We had minimal expansion cards show up during the first game against the mummy. After that game, Mike separated the expansion cards out to easily get the game to fit back in the box. This means they won’t be shuffled into the deck as well as if they were left to the next time.

The second time was with Michael’s copy and we went a-fishin’! I managed to get down to the 30-point artifact and the others then ran for the exit. I thought I had enough feet in my deck and made a run across the bottom of the board to collect tokens and managed to get one turn away from exiting before dying. I collected enough points from the board to end up the winner.

The game needs an after-market insert.

Drop It
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: 6/2018
My Rating: 7

The first game was with Mike’s set with the Friday group. I got my replacement parts fairly quickly after that and brought the game along on a few Saturdays. Of course, I forgot my replacement pieces, because I didn’t put them in the box, but Nico bought it and we played. I once again did not do well. Next was a three-player game with my copy and I thought I might be in contention at the end, but I had a bad selection of parts left over and fell out of contention at the end. This might be one of those games I like but will not be good at. Then we played at Mike’s again.

One complaint is the bonus circles on the board can be hard to see. I might need to figure out a way to mark them without making the game look marred.

Minerva

Nico has the deluxe version of this. The big issue with the game is the table space it needs. I am not sure how I feel about the game play. We played it the last Saturday of the month and I am still digesting how the game works. It’s one we need to play again before I form a solid opinion.

Mystery Rummy: Al Capone and the Chicago Underworld
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 5/2018
My Rating: 8
Owned: Yes

Mike didn’t go out in a single hand and won only one, 39 to 38, and I should have won that one but a change in the card I picked with a Search Warrant changed what I could do and I should have gone out a turn earlier and he would have ended with fewer points. This was one of those games I won in large part because of the way the cards fell and not because of how either of us played. Even when I messed up, he only gained a point on me.

Our second game went much the same, though the scores were closer since I was going out quickly each round, keeping scores, and relative scores closer. Mike went out one hand and got within 20ish points, but I was able end the sixth hand with just enough points for the end game and win.

One Deck Dungeon: Forest of Shadows

We’d played the original game once a couple of years ago, and Mike had played it quite a bit as well. This one adds poison and a forest theme. We lost early on, near the end of the first level.

Pencils & Powers
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 5

This is more of a solo game than one than a game for multiple players. On top of that, the game doesn’t really flow well. If I played solo games, I would probably print out some of the adventures and try them, but I do not and will not. If Mike wants to play it again, I would, because I do enjoy the supreme domination the dice give me against his feeble attempts at scoring.

Roll to the Top!
Times Played: 6
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 8

My first time playing a physical copy was Mike’s using the Eiffel Tower sheet. Mike and Jerry hadn’t played the game online so I had an advantage on the game’s pacing and just pulled out a victory a turn or so before they would have finished.

Later in the month, I taught the game to Ed, err, Mike M., using the Eiffel Tower and we played again immediately using the Pyramid. Later that same day, we played with five using the least-interesting sheet, the Burj Khalifa. Then later in the month there was a tie between Nico and I on the Space Needle. Finally, Mike and I played on the Space Needle as well.

My biggest complaint with the game is that there are only 30 of each sheet and that means I need to save five of each to laminate so I can keep playing the game over the long term.

Saint Malo
Times Played: 1

The first cannon was crossed off on the first roll (Mike loved the pirates this game) and we were both completely devastated by the pirates during the game, losing 30 points each.

Shadows of Brimstone
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2018
My Rating: 9
Owned: Yes

We began again at Mike’s after several interrupted planned starts. I have the male characters of all the classes painted and some of the female ones. With the plethora of choices, we have an Outlaw, Rancher, Samurai, and U.S. Marshal. Several of us wanted to try the Samurai and Jerry ended up being the one to go with it. I seriously thought about Gambler and Shaman, but went with the Outlaw.

Our first mission was the standard “For a Few Dark Stone More” scenario and we had a hard time of it. The Marshal was knocked out once and had a sanity break another time. The Outlaw was knocked out as well.

I went through all my cards when the final shipment arrived and separated them so when we start playing again on Saturdays, I can introduce new elements as we go. Mike’s set is still combined so we could face just about anything released so far. He is not happy about the number of cards and the space they take up and the effort it takes to wade through everything to play the game. He is right: It is a chore and that is one of the reasons I haven’t tried starting up on Saturdays. He said he is going to sell off his Forbidden Fortress pledge and I am leaning towards doing that as well.

Expansion Played: Venus Next

This game felt like work. I never managed to get everything I wanted for Ecoline. By the time I was able to play the card that gave me plant production equal to my plant tags, I only had four of them. I had a comfortable win.

A large part of the win was I funded two awards and two milestones and it means I start ahead of everyone else when the end-game scoring starts.

Looking forward to trying Prelude and might even try the full corporate game again.

Last Month Played: 6/2018
My Rating: 9

When I put the game away after playing last month with Friends and Foes, everything didn’t go back into the box it belonged to and I forgot. So when we sat down this month with only the main game and my newly-painted zombies, we had a couple of boards from F&F and was missing a couple of the base game.

Important safety tip: always have board 20. Every scenario uses it. So we found a scenario where we had all the boards except that one and picked one resembling 20 and set it up. It worked. We won. Megan, my character, died, thanks to in an inopportune double-activation, but the others went on to prevail.

Speaking of custom inserts, it sure would be nice to have a solution designed for the Green Horde boxes.

It's starting to be hot here, but not quite yet. They days haven't been over 110 regularly, but that has to be soon. Games can't be left in the car, some even for the time it takes to run into the store and get a gallon of milk. So, while most of the country can play outside, we're inside playing games. Of course, I never play outside: the sun is trying to kill me!

This month, the lowest rated game I played was a ‘5’ and the highest rated game played was a quick-playing ‘10’.

In June, I played 39 different games a total of 71 times and five expansions accounted for five of the recorded game plays for the month. Nine of the games and one of the expansions were new to me, and I played 12 of the games and two of the expansions in May.

Here is what I played during June:

6 Nimmt!
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 12/2017
My Rating: 8

While playing Go Nuts for Donuts, Mike M. said he hasn’t played this before. Of course, we had to play and after the first game Mike wanted to play again. Nick didn’t do well in either game and complained because he was used to doing so much better when playing with his generally non-gaming friends while Michael and I were both doing really well. I almost felt bad for him. Then I remembered who I was and that those feelings were alien to me, and it stopped.

I made a calculated risk near the end of a round and it stuck Nick with enough blue tiles to earn him negative 11 points on their own. Classic.

Allison won for the first time, after stating she just wasn’t any good at the game. Yeah, sure.

Bohemian Villages
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7

It’s a dice rolling game which the players are trying to occupy buildings on the tiles that are laid out. The tiles represent villages and each has various buildings on it and there are some requirements for set-up depending on the number of players. But...

truekid wrote:
Yes, something seems to have happened to the front/back matching for some of the tiles during printing.

So much for quality control. But the game is playable as-is but the set-up becomes fiddly when trying to make sure there aren’t two sides of the same tile face-up.

We played this at Mike’s and, dang, Jerry won. Obviously, something was wrong with the deck, board, or the number of dragon cubes.

Jon and I played this and then later in the day we played it with five. It worked well with five and I sucked at it...

Dragon Castle
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7

Mike bought this set-collection/drafting game that comes with thick plastic tiles and it has pretty straight-forward scoring and game play.

We played it first on a Friday with four players and I liked it, but thought it might be better with two. The next time I went by his place to play some two-player games I suggested this. I was right. With two, players really need to keep an eye on what each other are doing and what they might be opening up with the tile selections. It is tight.

We haven’t played with the Spirit and Dragon cards and I wonder if they will improve the game with more players? I liked it, though not enough to end up buying it any time soon and, if I feel it is best as a two-player game, I won’t end up getting it because I would only play it with Mike, who already owns it.

I also wonder how the tiles might react to the heat of being in a car during the Arizona summer? Will the tiles warp?

Drop It

My copy came missing the circles of two colors (yellow and green as mentioned in a forum thread). I contacted Thames-Kosmos a few days ago, but haven’t heard from them yet. and the Spam filter ate their quick response and the parts are on the way!

Flamme Rouge
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7

Mike picked this up and he, Damian, and I played and then we played again the following week with Matt. I liked the single-use cards and design choices for drafting and exhaustion. It is a good game, but not one I can see getting any time soon. I would have bought a few years ago without second thought. But my lack of space, combined with the Stronghold Games price surcharge, means it is something I won’t be buying.

Go Nuts for Donuts
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 7

The first game played was the day after National Donut Day. Who knew there was one? Wikipedia says it is an “event created by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor those of their members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.” Who knew it was such a militaristic game?

Hardback
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/2018
My Rating: 8

I did really well trashing cards and flipping over wild cards which let me use their abilities. Nick went out to an early lead before I managed to start scoring points in bunches. It was the first time Allison had played and she thought maybe the flipping cards were overpowered, but I think it was just a matter of me having good synergy and was able to thin out my deck so it was a well-oiled machine.

Heaven & Ale
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 6

We believe we played the monks properly this time. I’m not sure this game will have legs for me. The scoring is a little too convoluted and the choices are really not many because someone will always grab just about every tile on the board as they move by.

High Score
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 8/2017

I did all the rolling for both games. In one round of the first game I rolled ten eights and the next only had one. The crying from the others made my terrible games worth it. Feel the pain, beaches!

High Society

I might have stood a chance at winning if the last two cards weren’t two of the three negatives. Stupid randomness.

Isle of Skye
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2018
My Rating: 7

Expansion Played: Journeyman.

My initial thoughts on the expansion is it causes too much to be going on during the game. I wouldn’t buy it if I owned the game.

Isle of Trains
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/2017
My Rating: 8

The game was not going well and we quit about half way through. Matt was frustrated with his cards, messed up a turn and the mood around the table called it a game. I think Damian was winning at that moment.

Istanbul: The Dice Game
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 8

Mike and Nico both bought this and Mike and I played the first game with Nick. I grabbed two of the extra dice and ran away with the game. We immediately played again, with Eric replacing Nick, and Mike grabbed two of the extra dice and I won that game, which we both felt meant extra dice wasn’t an auto win.

I bought it and then played a couple of four-player games on successive Saturdays. Since I hadn’t read the rules, I didn’t realize that the game ended at five rubies with more players. Nick would have won the first game, but after he had five gems and was just about to get six, Jon got his fifth and six rubies on an incredible roll.

I like this much more than I liked the board game, which was good. The things that was a little weak about the board game was it felt like someone grabbing a lead would be hard to catch. That didn’t seem like the case with the die game.

Kingdomino

My Rating: 7

I played this once with Queendomino and twice as a stand-alone game.

We only played four games in the one sitting. Wow. I guess the fun is wearing out?

Oh My Goods!
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7

This is a clever engine building card game where the cards have multiple uses: as buildings, goods, or resources. Both Mike and I were new players and both would have done much differently if we had any experience before playing.

Potion Explosion
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 6/2017
My Rating: 8

Things were going slow for me during the game and Nick was finishing potions quickly while Michael and Jon were both finishing potions at a slower rate, but still faster than me.

When we totaled the scores, I had won. I didn’t realize that Nick was focusing on small potions to complete sets. Mine were larger potions and I collected a couple of sets of three for just enough bonus points to pull out a victory.

Powerships
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7

Mike picked up this re-theme/update of Powerboats and we played. I really like the changes, and it was a fun race. From what Mike said, they fixed the scoring for multiple races, so each race counts in the new version, if you run a series of races to find a winner over several games.

Queendomino
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 8

We played using the combined game with Kingdomino.

Nick, Allison, and I played. I like the combined game better with three. It gives the players a little more freedom since one tile is not chosen each round and removes some of the luck of the tiles available each round when there are four playing.

Qwinto
Times Played: 6

My Rating: 7

I ended up ordering a copy off Amazon that came from Germany and most of these playings were with my set at the store.

Raiders of the North Sea
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 12/2017
My Rating: 7

It’d been six months since either of us had played, so we had to go through the rules again and get familiar with how to play. I immediately focused on iron to get my armor rating up and gold to have for later raids. I did end up winning easily, but there’s an asterisk because for about 1/3 of the game I had more than five crew. When we realized it, I just killed off they two extra I had. We figured they had given me a few extra points, but not enough to make a real difference in the game, and I lost any potential points from them being fed to the Valkyries.

Mike’s planning on getting one of the expansions and also getting this played on a Friday with Jerry and Damian.

Roll Player
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/2018
My Rating: 7

Expansion Played: Monsters & Minions.

The Kraken is a tough monster and my Dark Elf Warrior was not quite up to the task of being the best of the best. It’s gotta be his elf part. Weakling elfises (rhymes with Elvises).

Shards of Infinity

This is a fun combat game, but I found the cards a little hard to read because of the colors and shading of the text boxes.

Space Base
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 5/2018
My Rating: 7

We played. I won the first game, then sold the game to Nick.

I bought it specifically to sell to someone else in the group and Nick finally broke down and got it from me. I lost about $5 on the transaction, but got to play it a lot before passing it on to him. This means we’ll get to play it again fairly often as Nick will bring it with him.

Splendor
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/2018
My Rating: 8

This was played on a Friday. I normally focus on getting a bunch of small gems before jumping to high scores, but the tableau wasn’t working out for that strategy for me. I ended up going for several early level two gems and then some fairly quick level threes, and managed to get to 15 points just as it seemed like the others were about start ramping up to a win. I attribute this win to the cards falling just right for me when I drew blind or needed something to appear when a card was claimed by someone else.

Always a fun game, and Mike has the box insert from The Broken Token which really organizes the box quite nicely for those with the expansion. Not that we play with the expansion. But, you know, it is organized nicely.

Steamrollers
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 5

The biggest problem I have with the game is the inability to plan your deliveries because it’s difficult to keep track of everyone’s routes. I’d rather play one of the Railways of the World series, which only cost a little more (Railways of Nippon for $70 vs. Steamrollers at $50) and are far superior games.

Tanz der Hornochsen
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 3/2006
My Rating: 7

Since Nick and Allison are fans of 6 Nimmt!, I was inspired to drag this out. Of course, they liked it, and we played two games in a row. Both times, I finished with no points and won. Allison was at one point the second game.

Terraforming Mars
Times Played: 1

My Rating: 8

Expansion Played: Venus Next for one of the games.

One playing with three people.

Thunderstone Quest
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 5/2018
My Rating: 8

I played my first game with a random set-up and it was fun. We had a couple of things that gave bonuses for demons and/or undead, and we had none of those. As it turned out the Guardian was one of those, so anyone who had one of the items in play benefited.

We played with the Guardian unknown until we had to fight it.

I am not sure I am going to back the new Kickstarter since it is $50 for just one quest.

X nimmt!
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7

This is a fun take on 6 Nimmt! and it plays well with four players and is only okay with two. The one thing I might suggest is playing a number of rounds equal to the players, or at least three, since one really bad round can take someone out of the running in the first round.

Zombicide: Green Horde
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: 5/2018
My Rating: 9

We played quest 6, “Siege Breakers,” using the ultimate rock stars who are dead. Not zombie-dead, but really dead. In real life, not the game. Zanzibar, run by yours truly, died half way through the game when I inadvertently activated the Fatty Bursters on an all-Fatties extra activation. Oops. We still won the game as the others did what was needed.

The second game was at Mike’s with random characters and the tainted walkers from Friends and Foes. It was quest 7, “Fire in the Horde.” This scenario takes away the trebuchet for most of the scenario as the characters are trying to build it.

Games three and four were quest 6 from Friends and Foes, “On Feline Wings” using the tainted orc walkers. It isn’t that good a scenario. We won the first time in ten minutes by finding the two objectives in the first two rooms. We immediately played again and lost when the extra activations of the fatties killed us good. Real good.

The Fatty Bursters are an awesome addition. Who knew that four enemy figures could really add a lot to the shambling mobs? The tainted walkers are also fun. I’m looking forward to playing with more of the new enemies.

I got nothing for a summary, quip, or uninteresting bit of chatter. So...

The lowest rated game I played was a ‘6’ and the highest rated (and most-played) game played was a quick-playing ‘10’.

In May, I played 32 different games a total of 68 times and nine expansions accounted for 10 of the recorded game plays. Four of the games and four of the expansions were new to me, and I played eight of the games and two of the expansions in April.

Here is what I played during May:

Alhambra
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2017
My Rating: 8

Surprisingly, Jon had not played this and Rob and I explained it and we dove into the game. It was nice to play it for a second time in six months.

Azul
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 7

I have a rare, cardboard start player token that I’ll sell for only $10.

Let me know if you’re interested.

Dream Home
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 7

Last time I played, I had an almost-perfect house. This time, it was oddly-created but I still scored enough to pull out a victory against the rookie architects.

Familienbande
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 3/2012
My Rating: 7

Jon had stated an interest in playing this game and I had it with me when it was just the two of us for a short time and we played a couple of games. I had forgotten that the score track was so difficult to use because of the tiny spaces for the cylinders that track the score for each trait.

During a player’s turn they will either create a marriage by playing card on another of the opposite gender and draw a card, pass and draw a card, or play an offspring by matching the three traits on the card with three of any of the six from a married couple. When an offspring is played, it scores points for each of its traits. Each player has a secret trait, and the winner will be the one with the trait with the highest score.

Finca
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 8

Rob and Allison had not played, so I explained it to them (which was a refresher for Jon) and we played. I ended up with a close win and I hope to keep the game in the rotation.

Geschenkt

Two quick games.

Hardback
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 8

This time, the Adverts weren’t used at all, in large part because we were just unable to generate enough coinage to really use it. The card mix was odd and fairly static because there was often one or two cards we would want to buy and many we couldn’t. The conditions weren’t right to be able to wipe them, but for a couple of times, and then the new cards weren’t useful, either. We still enjoyed the game, it was just odd.

Heckmeck am Bratwurmeck
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 12/2017
My Rating: 8

We played on a couple of consecutive Fridays. Jerry won once, after sinning Space Base and we thought it might be a sign of the impending apocalypse. The following week, all was back to normal, so the end might have been averted.

Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2011
My Rating: 7

We played the 10 Year Anniversary Edition with Mike and Damian playing the Zombies against Jerry and I. We played a close game and were about to win when we lost the fourth hero, which meant the zombies won.

Loopin’ Louie
Times Played: 17
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 10

Hen management!

Mystery Rummy 4: Al Capone and the Chicago Underworld
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 8

I got complete Al Capone sets twice, but didn’t manage to go out either time. Still, they give enough points to help me beat Mike, which is always unusal in this game.

Mystic Vale
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2017
My Rating: 6

Expansions Played: Mana Storm, Vale of Magic, and Vale of the Wild for all the games.

Mike has all the expansions so far and we played with the cards all mixed in, but none of the new rules. I still like the game, but am not blown away by it.

Noch mal!
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 7

Expansion Played: The Zusatzblock I scoring pad and the Zusatzblock II scoring pad, each for one of the games.

The changes to the color patterns really does change the pace of the game, though not the game itself. I liked the new pads and wish they were a little less expensive than they are from the online retailers. It might be wisest to laminate them.

OctoDice
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 7/2016
My Rating: 6

I’d been thinking of bringing my copy on a Saturday, but didn’t remember how to play and didn’t feel like reading the rules. Mike dragged it out on a Thursday and we played, so I also brought it on a Saturday and we played it again. Then Jon, Rob, and I played again the following week.

Pandemic: Iberia
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2017
My Rating: 8

It had been about a year since we played this, though it didn’t seem that long. We still lost...

Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/2017
My Rating: 8

After playing Pandemic: Iberia earlier in the month, Jon said he really wanted to try this one. I dug it out one Saturday and we gave it a try with Michael. We played on the easiest level and one of Jon’s questions near the end was whether or not we would be able to make it harder.

Pandemic: The Cure
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 11/2017
My Rating: 8

Expansion Played: Experimental Meds.

Mike, Jerry, and I lost. It was close, but we failed in the end.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 11/2017
My Rating: 7

Expansions Played: The Skinsaw Murders for both of the games.

Jon and Michael twisted my arm and I played a couple games.

Qwinto
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7

This was a lot of fun and had more depth to it than it initially appeared to have. I wish we had played this before I made my recent order from Germany. It will be on my next one.

Qwirkle
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 6/2016
My Rating: 8

Mike out-Qwirkled me four to one and ended the game, but I still managed to be competitive. But it is hard to win when the tiles were that skewed towards one player.

Ra: The Dice Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 2/2018
My Rating: 8

Mike and I. A two-player game. It’s as it usually is.

Railways of Nippon
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 8

A purchase of Mike’s. I really did not like using the plastic trains on the smaller board. I’ve replaced my trains with discs, which are less prone to being knocked around and also block fewer lines of site. The colors in this set are also kind of ugly as well, though I did get stuck with the worst of the colors so that might be shading my opinion.

I did like the tight map and game play with four. Mike really likes the small footprint of the game box. I doubt I will pick this up since I don’t bother dragging out the other maps of the game as well.

Roll Player
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 7

Expansion Played: Monsters & Minions.

We killed another monster. All hail the conquering heroes!

Saint Malo
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 2/2018
My Rating: 8

I don’t know why we even try to prevent the pirates when we play any more. Stupid pirates.

Space Base
Times Played: 8
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7

The rules aren’t very clear on some issues and their reliance on iconography is not too bad, but at least one icon sucks and is confusing. Generally, it is a good game and a lot of fun.

Splendor
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 10/2017
My Rating: 8

Mike bought the insert from The Broken Token and that inspired him to pull the game out, though we didn’t play with any of the expansions.

De Stijl
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 7

It’s a clever card placement game where the players are trying to have the most distinct squares of their color at the end of the game. It didn’t work all that well with two, but I bet it shines with three or four players since you are not just worrying about blocking one other player while placing your card.

Terraforming Mars
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 8

Expansion Played: Venus Next for one of the games.

Played twice more this month.

Thunderstone Quest
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 8

We played the two parts of the Ripples in Time quest, “Epilogue: Ripples in Time – Part I” and “Epilogue: Ripples in Time – Part II” and it is now time to try some random set-ups.

Topiary
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 2/2018
My Rating: 7

We were looking for something quick and the store’s copy was out, so I taught it to Michael while refreshing the rules for Jon and I.

Trains
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 8

Allison, Nick, and I played on the Osaka board. We were fairly distributed on our starting spaces, but I was pretty open and managed to pull out a close victory, even after Allison jumped into my eight-point city.

Zombicide: Green Horde
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 4/2018
My Rating: 9

We played the “Culling the Herd” quest and it was a really good quest and wasn’t just “find the goals and exit.” It is played on a small, four-board, map and there are four barriers that need to be moved to block in two of the spawn zones, that then get moved to the same space as one zone. Once that is done, they have to get to the trebuchet.

Later in the month, we played “Fallen Fortress” and that was another good scenario. I’m looking forward to the rest of the content from the Kickstarter which is shipping now, so I should have it sometime in August.

Fewer games were played this month, but that was okay. With one longer game being played five times, it meant that there was less time for some lighter games.

The lowest rated game I played was a new ‘6’ and the highest rated game played was a new implementation of an oft-played ‘9’.

In April, I played 20 different games a total of 35 times and seven expansions accounted for 16 of the recorded game plays. Only one of the games were new to me, and I played 10 of the games and none of the expansions in March.

Here is what I played during April:

51st State: Master Set
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 01/2018
My Rating: 8

We played this at Nico’s and it was a blast. Of course I would feel that way because I scored a whole lot of points and beat the high score set when Nico has been recording games. I smashed the score. I ended up with well over 70 points, thanks to the Mutants and razing all kinds of cards the last turn.

7 Wonders
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 9/2016
My Rating: 8

I brought this for the first time in a while. We played with five of us and no one stopped Michael from gathering the green cards and they were enough to push him to the win.

Azul
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 7

We played at Mike’s and I had a near-perfect game, beyond having two turns with -6 points, and ended with a rare win.

Castles of Burgundy
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 02/2018
My Rating: 8

Nico pulled this out of the closet and we taught the game to Mike M. I had a plan on which bonus tiles to collect, but I seemed to always be a step behind Mike. I would like to blame his winning on my spending a lot of time giving him help instead of paying attention to my game, but that would be petty.

Clank!
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 12/2017
My Rating: 8

Expansion Played: The Mummy’s Curse.

I got to the Game Depot a little early and picked this up. I had time to sleeve the cards and pull the Sunken Treasures cards from the mix. I started setting up the board in case people wanted to play when they arrived, and we did play. During that game, we didn’t get many mummy moves but the card mix and the map seemed like they will work well.

Game two was a couple of weeks later and we saw many more curses, which was good to see.

Dice Throne
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 7

Mike and I played a game and my Shadow Thief overcame Mike’s Moon Elf.

Hardback
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 8

Michael and I played a game.

Mystery Rummy 4: Al Capone and the Chicago Underworld
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 8

Mike and I played a game.

Nations: The Dice Game
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 01/2018
My Rating: 7

Expansion Played: Unrest for one of the games.

We played the first game without the expansion as it was a teaching game for Mike. The second game we played was with the expansion. Nico won both games.

I’m done with the expansion countries. The ones that have six dice are a huge advantage and the rest might be balanced among each other. We’ll just play with the originals where everyone has the same beginning abilities.

Queendomino
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 8

Michael annihilated me in a game.

Race for the Galaxy
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: 2/2018
My Rating: 8

Expansion Played: The Gathering Storm for four of the games

and Rebel vs. Imperium for three of them.

Mike, Jerry, and I played once. Jerry hadn’t played since we taught him and was a little slow to get his wheels under him, but I think he was getting it again by the end of the game.

Michael and I also played a set of three games, going with the classic expansions. I forgot how boring it can be when we play since the outcome of the games is often easily determined by the time five or six cards have been played by each player.

Roll Player
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 3/2018
My Rating: 7

Expansion Played: Monsters & Minions for all the games.

The Kickstarter arrived and I read the rules and had it ready to play the following Saturday.

Jon, Rob, and I played. I was the only one who had one of the new races, but a couple of us used new classes. I liked the monsters, though I forgot about not having the monster match the color of one of the players, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. Jon and I liked the addition, and Rob hadn’t played the game before, so he didn’t have an opinion on the changes.

Michael and I also played a game and I forgot about adding an extra card to the market. It was still fun with the expansion and I hope the next time we play I will get the rules right.

Try three was at Nico’s and he had picked up the box insert. It looks a little too complex for me but I might still want to get it. I collected a complete set of armor and ignored the monster because it was obvious that I wasn’t going to get many dice to fight it. I ended up with a win, but it was a really close game. It was good to see someone winning while not worrying about fighting the monster.

Steamrollers
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me
My Rating: 6

Mike got his Kickstarter edition of the game. After reading the rules, he said it was Steam the Dice Game, and he was right.

When it was on Kickstarter, I thought about backing it because it is a roll and write game but missed doing it by an hour or two. If I had backed it, I would have been happy with it, but I also don’t regret not backing it and don’t think I will be buying it when it reaches store shelves.

Expansions Played: Hellas & Elysium for two of the games and Venus Next for one of them.

Mike and I played and it was a long game. It took a while for us to get all the oceans out and we had a lot of time to develop the board otherwise. I would estimate that the board was 80% filled, at least. We both scored over 100 points, which is rare for my games where the winning scores seem to be in the 60s to 80s.

Near the end of the game, I had a card that would let me play the last two oceans, but I delayed playing it a round it because I was generating so many plants and VPs from my card actions and the score seemed close. As soon as Mike played an ocean leaving the final two, I played it. The score wasn’t as close as I thought it was: I ended up winning by about 10 to 15 points. Mike was happy with the results because I had played the game so many more times than he had. I suspect we might play it some Thursdays when it is just the two of us.

The second game was on the Elysium map with Jon, Rob, and Christine.

Later, Michael and I played another game using the original map with no other expansion. I must have had 12 cities on the board and Michael had a few more when the game ended.

Then Mike and I taught the game to Jerry, also on the Elysium map. Jerry ended up grasping things well and won the game.

Finally, I played with Michael, Nick, and Jon using Venus Next. For most of the game I forgot that could plant greenery with seven plants instead of eight. I still managed to pull out a close win.

Rob and I played the one scenario from the “Total Eclipse of the Sun” set that I hadn’t played and then Nico, Mike, and I played the first one from “At the Foundations of the World”. This means I have played the first ten scenarios. I have three more to go and then I will start playing with random set-ups.

As of now, I plan on not using the side quests because they are so unbalanced. I might decide to play with them to just track the VP difference before and after adding in their points. The one game we played without them using my set we did not use the guilds. I am not sure if I will use them if we aren’t using the side quests.

Nick, Michael, and I played on the Tokyo map. They both started on the east side of the map, leaving me the west for myself.

Mike, Jerry, Damian, and I played the second scenario from the original set using Ned, Doug, Paul, and Josh. We lost the first attempt early on and restarted. The second time was more successful. I still like the changes from Zombicide: Black Plague over this version, which is a better implementation. With the next game setting, Zombicide: Invader, ending on Kickstarter soon, it made April an all-around Zombicide experience.

We played the second scenario, “Orc Necromancers?” We had a lot of problems with the water and the splitting.

A couple of weeks later, after my copies arrived, we played scenario three, “Know Your Enemy,” at the Game Depot. It has far less hedges and water and, instead of being something that becomes an infuriating game in and of itself, these new features actually added to the scenario’s enjoyment.
