It seems to be part of my nature to reflect on all my experiences--even the hobby experiences many people consider trivial. And I reflect best when I'm typing. So, here are some of my thoughts on games and gaming. Enjoy them if you can, comment if you like.

I've been in a constant battle with time all my life. Not because time is running out any faster for me than for anybody else, but just because time irritates me so much. I try to turn a blind eye to the passing of time, and when that fails I become resentful and try to rebel.

Because of that, I've mostly avoided real-time games. The faster the action, or the more the clock is involved, the more distasteful the game is to me. In rare instances I'll play a real-time simulation game (a recent favorite is Silent Hunter III) just for the almost visceral experience it provides--that feeling of actually being there. But such games are fillers between all the turn-based strategy games I play.

People often compare games to books or movies. I suppose it's because all of them are, or can be, solitary forms of entertainment. And because game geeks are often into books and movies too (especially science fiction or fantasy).

Me, I've been a lifelong gamer (though an unusually solitary one), but I'm much less a reader or moviegoer. Lately, though, I've been enjoying all three pastimes, so I thought I'd reflect on them a bit.

I stumbled upon a couple articles recently (including this one, though another that I lost the link to is better) which mentioned three big psychological needs we all have: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. One can't have lasting happiness, it's said, unless all three of those needs are fulfilled.

So I thought I'd reflect on how those needs apply to gaming--at least for me.

I haven't been able to get in the mood for strategy gaming lately. I've been under the weather for one thing, but somehow I just can't bear the idea of having to struggle and fight. So I've been playing a new-to-me, relaxing kind of game--Farmington Tales.

The winter sales and hot deals and such have had me shopping around for new games. Not buying much, but shopping. And now I'm reflecting on the shopping.

This weekend, Amplitude Studios games are free to play and also discounted. I'd been curious about those for a long time, as I've read good things about them. I went as far as to buy Endless Space: Disharmony on sale some time ago. But that's overshadowed by ES2 now, and I've found Endless Legend more appealing anyway.

Yet, so far I've only downloaded ES2 and played a little of the tutorial. And that may be as far as I go.

I just read a short article that made me think of this blog. The article basically said rumination is not good, then gave a two-step process for overcoming it:
1. focus on positive thoughts, and
2. practice problem solving.

This started out as a forum post, but it got too long, so now it's a blog post.

Most of us seem to be constantly wanting more, more, more. More games, more innovation in games, more of the kinds of games we like, more of our favorite characters or game mechanics or themes--more of everything.

This morning I started wondering (again) what I'm doing playing games anyway.

I was into a game of Age of Wonders III: Eternal Lords, and I misjudged a battle and lost my hero and ended up exiting the game in a huff. I must've grumbled out loud, because my wife called out and asked me to be quiet.

That reminded me of all the times she has said, "If you're not having fun with that game, don't play it." And then I started wondering why I do.

This morning I caught a YouTube video which bemoaned the sad state of Civilization-type games, the so-called 4X games, and pointed out signs of long-overdue change, illustrated by Endless Legend and Stellaris. It's an old complaint, but today I'm wondering how valid it is.

While I was staying home and avoiding the Black Friday crowds, I browsed the game sales at GOG and Steam. I always build games up so much in my mind, especially if they're well hyped and have been getting positive reviews, that I'm easily amazed anytime the price of a good game drops below ten dollars. If it gets down around five, it's almost an instant buy.
