I think a lot of people have been there: you suddenly have free time, an awesome game to play, but you are either by yourself, or with very few players, or tired of being the GM/referee (tired of gming?! impossible! Well, hypothetically speaking...).

So, that time is either wasted away or spent doing other non rpg things. Bummer

Not to worry! I want this list to be a useful collection of games that either work great as solitaire experiences, can be played with just one or two players and a gm, or can be played cooperatively with the gm as a player character as well.

Everyone is, of course, encouraged to add games to the list and their experiences with these types of games. Ok, here goes!

Basic Overview

A free fantasy solitarie game, with very simple rules, it comes with one adventure; almost everything is determined by die rolls, but there are some important choices here and there.

Is it a solitaire game?

Yes, that's technically the only way you can play it. It plays well, but there really is no balance; the first adventure can be deadly, but as you gain a bit of experience and treasure, after a couple of adventures, they all feel like a walk in the park.

Is it good for soloing or can it be played with few players?

Not really, there is no gm and no point in playing as one, because everything works through a sort of artificial intelligence.

Is it good for cooperative play?

It could be done, but it would need major tweaking of stats and rules.

Final thoughts

A simple and entertaining game at first, it becomes very repetitive and unbalanced in favor of the players after a couple of adventures; you also need to purchase further adventures, classes, etc., if you want more replayability. Worst of all, the company that produced it stopped supporting it.

Basic Overview

A post-apocalyptic game of mutants, cyborgs, clones, half-beasts and many other things. It's old school at it's finest.

Is it a solitaire game?

Yes, in fact, all of the adventure modules so far can be played alone by using simple "choose your own path" and dice mechanics. It's a bit fiddly to handle so many characters at the same time though.

Is it good for soloing or can it be played with few players?

Yes, but each player will need to controll various characters at the same time. Other than that, it works great.

Is it good for cooperative play?

Yes, it's perfectly easy for the gm to create his own characters and be surprised as the plot develops randomly by using dice and making choices.

Final thoughts

An amazing game that reminds you of Mad Max, Blade Runner, Total Recall and whatnot; but be warned, it's old school, so expect death and retro dice mechanics.

Basic Overview

I think this is from the same designer of Chronicles of Arax, there are a lot of similarities, but this game feels more balaced, fun, and with better value.

Is it a solitaire game?

Yes, that's technically the way to play it. It's almost exactly like Chronicles Arax, but the adventures and mechanics are a bit more simple; they are also shorter, which is actually a good thing, because otherwise, repetitiveness sets in.

Is it good for soloing or can it be played with few players?

Like Arax, not really, there is not much reason to play as a gm or referee.

Is it good for cooperative play?

Not really, like Arax, major rules and stat changes need to be applied for it to work that way.

Final thoughts

With more adventures and classes without having to obtain numerous expansions and with shorter stories than Arax, it may be the better alternative for those gamers that abhor repetitiveness. It's not supported anymore though.

Basic Overview

A fighting game made tabletop rpg with a bunch of crunchy, somewhat convoluted mechanics. If you love Tekken, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, etc., this just may be the game for you; and that's a big "may".

Is it a solitaire game?

No, but with a game master engine such as Mythic, it could work, considering a lot of fighting games have very simple (not to say dead brain) plotlines.

Is it good for soloing or can it be played with few players?

Yes, actually, because of the focus on the lives of a few major fighters, it works great with just one or two players.

Is it good for cooperative play?

Yes, but it's better when used with a game master engine, so you can get surprised with different twists and plots.

Final thoughts

This game was made to be played with the fewest players possible; the amount of crunch you need to factor with each character and move begs it to be so, it just takes too much time per player!

"I'm going to hit you with my Hadok... gimme a sec... ok, 3+2 equals... yeah, ok, divided by... so yeah! I'm attacking you with my hadoken!!"

Abraham Zetina's Highest Recommendation!

Basic Overview

Old school fantasy roleplaying at it's finest! Seriously, if you like old d&d type games, like to play alone, with few players or cooperative, you owe it to yourself and to your players to check this game out. With an exotic feel and adult theme, it's sword and sorcery with no regrets.

Is it a solitaire game?

Yes, yes it is! Probably the best solo fantasy rpg I have ever played in my life. The gm emulator/engine runs smooth as butter, with surprises at every turn, thousands of combinations resulting from random tables, it feels like a game master is right there, tormenting you with all sorts of challenges.

Is it good for soloing or can it be played with few players?

It was designed with that in mind. With just one to three players, the game works like a charm, presenting challenges and enemies that fit any and all situations; and thanks to witty mechanics, player characters always havea choice or way to succeed, despite their lack of resources because of reduced number of party members.

Is it good for cooperative play?

It works amazingly well as a cooperative experience. You and your friends just need to generate things as if it were a solitaire game according to the book, and you will forge stories together, fight together, raid together. It feels as if you are going camping with your pals! However, if you want to play with more than three players, I recommend switching some of the rules back to the non-epic rules (labyrinth lord standard rules) or the challenges will be too easy.

Final thoughts

Wow, this game is just perfect, it has everything you need to run solitaire, solo (or few players) and cooperative adventures. Get it now, Crom demands it!

Pretty much the granddaddy of all RPG's that can be played solo.
There's a ton of solo adventures available and if you find you have a few players you can easily flip back and forth.

Basic Overview

Maid anime maid made into a roleplaying game. If you are into the genre or appreciate it's wacky elements, this is the perfect game for crazy over the top adventures. The book has so many options, it's possible to play comedy, horror, drama, etc.

Is it a solitaire game?

No, but with so many random tables, there's a hint it could work. However, you would need some tables from other games that generate NPCs reactions, so that you can feel the world come alive.

Is it good for soloing or can it be played with other players?

Yes, because of the main characters focused gameplay, in my experience, this game shines with few players. However, because of the theme, 1 player and 1 gm can feel a bit awkward, unless, of course, you play with your girlfriend, wife and whatnot and the game turns roleplay into "roleplay"

Is it good for cooperative play?

Yes, considering there are rules to create a mansion master (usually a gm character), it could be possible by using random tables, but as I said before, a table that generates different NPC reactions would be handy as well.

Final thoughts

If you are into the theme, this game is perfect for those moments when you have just two or three players with you, and the cooperative potential is there, you just need those reactions.

Basic Overview

A gritty dark fantasy game where players fight against demons and their human minions. Player characters also wield demonic powers and are expected to die at some point, so expect to play as different characters during a single campaign. The dice mechanics are very simple.

Is it a solitaire game?

No, but it's simple mechanics and straightforward plotline makes it perfect to use with Mythic.

Is it good for soloing or can it be played with other players?

This was made for a single player character to go solo against the world (handled by a gm); having more than one will surely require major rules modifications.

Is it good for cooperative play?

Not really; same issues of playing with more than one player character.

Final thoughts

Specifically designed to played with 1 gm and 1 player, it should be played like that; there is some solitaire potential though.

Type: Cooperative
Solitaire? No
GM-equivalent: rotation across players
Scenarios: plenty, and they're fairly replayable

This one has a few slight problems...
The adventures tend to be combat heavy
Later chapters always assume you won the previous chapter
no branching paths.
Character Generation is vague.

What it does well:
It's an excellent rules-light RPG.
It's got a fun and campy setting, which will be vaguely familiar to many.
The rules design strongly encourages properly campy dialogue.
The scenarios are wonderfully crafted to trigger suitably campy dialogue.

The rotating GMing allows it to play well without any one player being the GM. The railroad plots allow for running it without GM decisions actually influencing the story...

Type: Standard RPG with solo modules
GM-Equivalent: Live GM or solitaire modules (mostly of the pick a path type, but one is counters on map triggering events)
Solo Playability: high. Several excellent modules released.

Combat is boardgamish, but due to the modules, readily played solo. If playing with a friend, the friend controls the badguys, and the module is a tactical scenario generator.

It's also a fully fledged RPG, and an excellent pair of tactical man-to-man boardgames.

Legends of the Ancient World is a pseudoclone (a clone that makes significant changes, but retains significant compatibility), and LotAW modules are also useable with TFT.

Basic Overview
Little game of horror where one player plays the ghost(s) and the other is trying to survive (it's not likely that you will and you die horribly).

Is it a solitaire game?
No.

Is it good for soloing or can it be played with few players?
It's specifically made for 1 player and 1 GM.

Is it good for cooperative play?
It's 1 vs. 1. One of you is trying to survive, the other is setting up scenes where the other might be killed. The cards will descide your fates.

Final thoughts
Depending on what the cards do this game can either be really fast, or quite long. We played it for roughly 2 hours, but we also heard of the character dying within 15 minutes for others.

Basic Overview

A free solitaire game, with very simple rules. Uses a stripped pack of playing cards to determine what occurs over a 52-week solo space flight.

Is it a solitaire game?

Yes, that's the only way you can play it.

Is it good for soloing or can it be played with few players?

I think the only way to play it is solo.

Is it good for cooperative play?

No; as written it's solo only.

Final thoughts

It was interesting but (for me) not much fun. Maybe if your random string of events wasn't so harsh it would be better. But with most of the cards being negative, I'm not sure anybody is going to have a good run.
