This geeklist tries to string together a full campaign of high-quality, free adventure modules for old school fantasy gaming. I used RPGGeek's own Bryce Lynch, who has reviewed hundreds of old school modules both here and on his blog, as a filter for quality, and most of the modules on this list meet his approval. You can find over 300 more free modules listed in the Dragonsfoot forums.

Setting & System: To help connect these modules together, I have incorporated comments on placing them in the northern realms of Mystara, detailed in a series of fan-made gazetteers, freely available at the Vaults of Pandius. To help you get started and provide a bit of the flavor of these realms, I threw together Searchers of Mystara, a little variant of Searchers of the Unknown. It's probably best just for an initial adventure or two, and then you'll want to switch a more full-fledged system.

Part I. Tales in the Western Alliance

1st-4th Levels

This leg of the campaign includes four free modules, all of which made Bryce Lynch's list of excellent "new old school" adventures. He's reviewed hundreds of these things, so he knows what he's talking about!

All of these adventures can find a decent home in the Western Alliance, an area of Mystara detailed in a fan-made supplement (pdf) inspired by TSR's original Gazetteer series. While there's probably little issue in linking these modules together without it, some DMs might find it useful in connecting them with side quests, travel encounters, NPCs, and so on. In my opinion, the maps are the best part of this material.

In the southwestern corner of this map of Mystara's Western Alliance, there's an unnamed settlement and a trail leading into the hills, the perfect location for this module! (If you want to be more daring, you can place it somewhere in the Northern Wildlands, probably around the Hagommerian Tribes.)

This module's predecessor--SM1: The Spider Farm--might be necessary to help the PCs invest in the mystery that The Melford Murder presents. Bryce Lynch doesn't think the prequel is that great, but he doesn't think it's terrible either; it's likely a harmless way to give its follow-up a little boost.

If you're looking for a little more material to help the PCs level up before moving on, consider the third part of this series, SM3: Shrine Of The Oracle. Just don't go past that.

As the PCs return north from the Northern Wildlands, send them on this little wilderness jaunt from a borderland fishing village, maybe that aforementioned unnamed settlement. The folklorish whimsy of the adventure along with the presence of leprechauns and faerie folk will fit right in with Mystara's Western Alliance (pdf).

The Western Alliance (pdf) is a realm of fairy tales and folklore, making it the perfect setting for "Red Tam's Bones." Although overall he recommends the module, Bryce Lynch thinks its fairy tale aspects could have been done up even more, and perhaps the gazetteer can help provide some ideas along that front.

The fairy tale vibe continues in the "Garden of the Hag Queen," but it's got a bit of a darker side since the entire module revolves around an "evil fortress." Bryce Lynch has some criticisms about the module's organization and maps, but overall thinks it is excellent. You could set this in the Western Alliance, like the last two modules, or place it in the Kingdom of Ghyr (zip), as you'll want the PCs traveling eastward for the next leg of the campaign. Ghyr's Camelot vibe might not be as perfect for this module, but I'm sure it'll do fine.

Part II. Her Dark Majesty

5th-8th Levels

We've already seen one module by John Turcotte ("Red Tam's Bones"), and there's another one in Part III ("Skein of the Death Mother"). For this middle segment, we'll be relying on him entirely, as he designed all four modules here, which collectively make up the Her Dark Majesty series.

This middle chapter of the campaign will benefit from any effort to connect it to the campaign's beginning and end. If the DM has a sense of the threat Her Dark Majesty poses, he can drop hints through out the preceding modules, making the somewhat hokey hooks for Her Dark Majesty more palatable. In addition, note the remarkable similarity between Her Dark Majesty and the ultimate foes in the final portion of the campaign--are they really all the same entity, just in different guises, or are the separate, completely unaware of each other? You don't have to work it all out before play, but be careful to turn the similarities into synergy rather than repetition.

As the PCs arrive in the Land of Song, we must depart for a bit from the fan-made Mystara Gazetteers, but that's okay because Turcotte provides plenty of background for this leg of the campaign. I recommend placing the Land of Song in a 5x5 hex area where the Western Lolbarth Forest is located, next to Leeha, in the Kingdom of Norwold (map). The Viking-inspired Land of Song will fit right in among these various other northern realms. Here, they can embark upon "Where the Fallen Jarls Sleep," Part 1 of the Her Dark Majesty series.

Part 2 of the Her Dark Majesty series, "Beneath Black Towen" draws some criticism from Lynch for being a little monotonous and demanding that the PCs be "heroes." Despite these drawbacks, he does say the series is growing on him with this module and commends how Turcotte deals with the more notable monsters.

Part 3 of the Her Dark Majesty series, "Stormcrows Gather" receives high praise from Bryce Lynch. In fact, he thinks that had it somehow been first in the series, the other two modules would have been much better. Thus, the DM might want to take a look at this one first to see how it can work to cast the entire series in the right light.

According to a comment on Bryce's blog, "The Emperor's Lost Army," an adventure in this issue of Footprints, is meant to be inserted into "Stormcrows Gather", helping bring a conclusion to the Her Dark Majesty series.

Unless I'm mistaken, even this addition does not result in a conclusive end to Her Dark Majesty's overall plot--just the potential invasion of the Land of Song. With some tweaking by the DM, that's exactly what the third and final leg of this campaign can provide...

Part III. Homages to Gygax Classics

9th Level & Beyond

By now, the PCs should be at "Name Level" and are becoming legends in their own right. For many, the pinnacle of high-level adventuring is Gary Gygax's GDQ series. Not surprisingly, many homages and variations of this original material have been made over the years, but not all of it is good (or free). With the help of the internets and Bryce Lynch's reviews, I pieced together a series of high-quality modules that should double as a tribute to D&D's creator and a fitting conclusion to this old school campaign.

Here we return to the use of the fan-made Mystara gazetteers, namely those for Littonia (pdf) and Kaarjala (pdf). The overland journeys between the locales presented in the modules should be entertainingly harsh, and these northern reaches should provide just the right stomping grounds for such expeditions.

This series of six modules (download) is both a continuation and an homage to Gygax's original series G1-2-3: Against the Giants. Each module focuses on a new type of giant and its lair, and Bryce Lynch thinks they do a good job sticking to Gygax's winning formula.

Set these in the appropriate environments of Littonia (pdf) or elsewhere around Norwold (map). Hook yourself up for an homage to the whole GDQ series by dropping a map to the next module in one of the giant's lairs.

Over on a Conan fan site, there's an adaptation of Gygax's classic Vault of the Drow (pdf). Switch the references to Hyboria to locations in Mystara, perhaps picking an undescribed area of Norwold, and the party can continue its search for Lolth or Her Dark Majesty or the Rimal Hag or whomever (i.e., "Zath" in this module).

Perhaps the map found in the City of the Spider God leads to the Lost Caverns of Acheron (pdf), an homage to Gygax's Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. This adaptation is set in a "frozen north," perfect for the fan-made Mystara Gazetteer on Kaarjala (pdf).

A cruel DM might provide another map leading to the Howling Hills, where the party will find the "false Tomb of Horrors," another tribute to a classic Gygax module. (Bryce Lynch didn't particularly like this module, but he doesn't seem to be a fan of the original either.)
