Welcome to
Solitaire Games On Your Table
June 2019

Home of “Together, We Game Alone”

Hello, and welcome to another month of exciting times with solo games! Feel free to participate in any way you like: Post about the solo games that you play, share your latest solo design or variant, comment on entries that strike your fancy, and join in. This is a very friendly group, and we happily welcome aboard every type of solo gamer!

Guidelines

1 Play a solo game, a solo variant, or a multiplayer game solo.
2 Add an entry to this GeekList and tell us about it. Get the most out of the SGOYT Aggregator by using at least one of the following tags:

1 Add the <summary></summary> tag to include a short overview. All summaries are recorded, as on Albia’s overview page.
2 Add the <rating></rating> tag to rate a game on a scale of 0.5 to 5.0. Only the most recent rating for a game is recorded, as on Albia's ratings page.

3 Be nice, but most of all have fun!
4 See something you like? Give it a thumb.

It's extremely helpful (but not mandatory) to include some thumbsup and thumbsdown describing the pros and cons of the game you played. They're great visual aids to summarize your post, and might help to keep the wallet damage down a bit!

Need a little help with formatting? Check out the Forum Formatting Guide and Tricks of the Geek.

About Me

When I’m not browsing the geek I Work, sometimes hard, sometimes not - A good balance is essential (professionally I work as a Content Specialist), I live healthy, or at least I try. I raise my children together with my wonderful wife, Love my close ones, Feed my cats, Listen to a podcast called ‘Nerdland’ and to Electronic Music, No interest in TV what so ever. I'm a mb Playtester, I play board games with others (yes you can), I do mb microbadges, and last but not least, I mb Run - The most liberating activity ever - Just me, my running shoes, the road ahead and my thoughts.

My theme for you this Month: Let's Go Outside!

Don't be misunderstood, I don't want to refer to the George Micheal song.
No serious:
"I think I'm done with the sofa
I think I'm done with the hall
I think I'm done with the kitchen table, ("unless it is to play a board game solitaire") baby
Let's go outside (let's go outside)
In the sunshine"

I admit, I do prefer Sunshine, but even in the Rain I go out to do my 10K.

This month for everyone who shares their outdoor activities. And a little extra if it's a boardgame activity .

I will start right here with sharing some sights I see every day on my 10K route.

Hope you'll will enjoy this months SGOYT GeekList!

Subscribe to this item to take your chance in winning another giveaway.

Details will follow when we hit 500 item entries this month...
We did it, we have 500 posts. Time to unlock this give away...

Some time ago I read how someone pointed out the resemblance between this game and Magic: The Gathering (MTG).
As many of us here I have also a history with MTG, and I believe some of us are still playing it.
I have a lot of good memories collecting the cards, constructing decks and playing this CCG.

For this give away I thought to bring up some good old memories about MTG.

The above are three of my Favorite MTG cards.

Juzam Djinn
While I was a little late to the party, I always had much interest in the early sets. Not that hard if you ask me when looking at this card. This one is absolutely one of my favorite MTG cards.

Goblin Spy
For me it all started with the Invasion set. This set had very nice Multicolor Dragons, but also pretty stupid Goblins like this one. This card in particular has great Flavor Text.

Priest of Titany
This was a key card of my first ever deck, not a very good deck, but this card definitely is. I’m also very found of the art on this card (due to this card I started to collect cards with art from Rebecca Guay) .

IMPORTANT : This give away will go to a fellow 1PG member living in Europe. But for those outside of Europe, feel free to add a comment just for the fun of it.

You can enter for this give away in two ways:
1 If you play or have played MTG, tell us in a comment below about your favorite card(s)
2 If you don’t know much about MTG, just give a nice comment about one of the cards I’ve listed or another random MTG card you happen to know.

Winner will be drawn randomly. Good luck!

What a great responce so far. Enjoyed myself a lot by seeing all these cards and reading the personal stories behind them. Please, keep them coming

Entries are accepted until Saterday 29th June. The winner will be announced here on June 30. The winner will also receive a Geek Mail from me.

I just bought someones complete collection of TMB for a pretty good price and was very excited to get it to the table.

<summary>I played against the first boss, Nom with Gasket. It took a bit to get the hang of how he played, but after a while I got in to a rhythm. I won most of the encounters, but a couple of times I really got trounced. I ended up with 2 Canisters, Cut and Guts, and Directive Aggro by the end. Gasket is a really fun character to play with lots of variety. In the end I made it to Nom and manage to kill him with a combination of Cut and Guts which slowly killed him as I kited him around the level (Well as he punched me around the level). It was insanely fun and I can't wait to play again. </summary>

<rating>4.5</rating>

thumbsup Fantastic components and visual presentation
thumbsup The encounters are thematic and lots of fun, and lead to some interesting decisions.
thumbsup Setup is a breeze.
thumbsdown Very expensive
thumbsdown Can be very hard at times

It took a few tries (well, more like 8-10 games...), but I finally got rid of that stupid ring! I played 4-handed with Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, and all four of them survived! Final score was 68.

I think it was a combination of good luck on the front end of the game (not drawing so many hourglass tokens) and better planning in terms of hand/token management given what was facing us on each board. At the end, Sam had the ring (I'd like to say it was good planning, but I kinda lucked out there as well) and was able to power through to the end drawing close-ish but not too close to Sauron (the 2 white circle Gandalf card helped a great deal). It was close, though, just two spaces away from the "RING IS MINE" space.

In my current solo campaign, I'm playing People of the Sun.

The basic structure of the campaign is different from People of the Lantern, which is the original campaign.

Lantern is structured as a 30-year campaign, in which various bosses show up to make sure you're on track to win the game.

In Sun, you play 25 years. There are no boss fights until LY21, then you fight 5 bosses in a row. If you lose a single boss fight, the sun scorches the earth clean and you lose.

Sun changes some other things around as well. The most notable is the buffs to survivors. If you wanted to play KD:M more like a standard, "we expect you'll win in the end" campaign game, than a "there's nothing fair about any of this" campaign game, you should check out People of the Sun. It's part of the Sunstalker expansion.

I've had a streak of improbable draws from the resource decks. I spent the first 6 years farming lions, because I just couldn't seem to draw hide.

The upside to 5 years of improbably low amounts of hide is that I have 3 Catgut Bows and 2 Cat Eye Circlets (I could have had 3).

By year 5 I finally managed to complete my second set of rawhide. That's really late.

In year 6 I went after a Screaming Antelope. I have 3 bows, 2 headbands, 2 circlets, 1 spear, and a Fist and Tooth master in training.

I kept control of the fight and went home with 14 resources total, which is decent.

I expect to hunt the Antelope at least twice more. On the third attempt, I expect to have two other items I want that should potentially make that my last antelope hunt until I need legendary bits for crafting.

Now it's LY7. I've arrived at the showdown with the Screaming Antelope and by sheer chance I drew the exact same terrain cards so I've set up the board exactly as last time.

Allister hits and crits on 5+.

There's always a chance something could go horribly wrong.

As promised, I'm finally posting my summer games (kids our done with school, but I still have another work week). I've been a long time reader of SGOYT and am happy to contribute.

My wife surprised me by having a coworker print some PnP games that I had the pdfs for but never got around to printing. (Probably because I said I was going to buy some of them..) And she's not even a board gamer!

To start, a quick 5 minute game of Orchard! What a great little game! It did have some tough choices, trying to optimize my coverage and not getting rotten fruit (I didn't have any tokens handy so I chose to not have it as an option for my first play). As a fan of heavier and longer games, this was a nice change of pace, only 5 minutes and only 9 cards and some dice as tokens. Yet it still made me think and even though I didn't get to play more than once today, I could easily play lots of games in a row trying to get higher scores.

I had some trouble getting double overlap and wasn't able to get any to 6 cry
Luckily, I didn't get the lowest score category, by scoring a 25.

More to come (not all PnP), especially after next week!

Got this about a week ago from Game Nerds DotD and looking forward to getting it on the table this next week.

Played the Desecrated scenario a few times earlier this week to get a feel for the game before starting the story. Lost the first two and won the third one.

Played through Story 1 and got one shotted by the boss. This was a little discouraging but I tried it again. Knowing what to expect, I spent more time leveling up the appropriate skills before the final encounter. This game reminds me a lot of my time spent in WoW. Leveling up your character to fight a boss. Wiping several times but learning something new from the encounter. Adjusting your game and trying again.

After the first couple of scenario play through's I wasn't feeling it and was referencing the rulebooks often which made the game progress slowly. After getting a better grasp of the rules (still having to reference all the creature abilities) the turns started to move along at a better pace. Once I started the Story the game stepped up to a much more enjoyable level by adding more life to the game and characters. I'm looking forward to starting on to the next story.

Rating: 4.5

Huh... Apparently the last time I posted on SGoYT was June of last year. I guess I took a year off.

LY 8 - People of the Stars

Just took on our first level 2 quarry, a screaming antelope, during LY7. No problem. Returning relatively unscathed, picked up PTSD but that was about it.

The 4 returning have 7, 6, 5, & 4 XP. There is a 3 XP survivor with the most dragon traits as well (6 I believe, but no constellation). Plus a couple more with 1-2 XP and some traits (some up to 4). Then about 7 fresh with 0 XP. I'm working on building up to constellations, so having survivors, well, survive, is more important than in the base campaign.

The fear of Murder is there every year.

This year, though, the hunters brought back the Plague. Used to hitting all my survivors up with XP in the base campaign, this hasn't been that bad in the past.

Did I mention I don't have ammonia innovated? I had Plague out on my one game table for two days before I sat down and played again. Good thing I have another table...

I literally cheered out loud when my 6 XP survivor rolled a 10, and survived. My 4 XP had to use a lifetime reroll, but ended with a 9. The 1 & 2 XP's did not fair so well...

So in the end, it wasn't that debilitating, but it could have been much worse. In anticipation for something like this happening again, I sent 4 well geared but 0 XP survivors against a level 1 antelope.

That poor beast didn't stand a chance.

Next year: The Tyrant Level 2 Nemesis Encounter

EDIT: My outdoor activity for the day was to get out and BBQ! Made some BOMB hamburgers on the grill. I like this month's theme, its something I'm trying to do more of.

I have no idea how I came across this game. I think I was bored and was browsing the Legion Games website. Most of their solo games I don't like, but this one caught my eye--mainly because it was a battle I had never heard of before. And it was on sale, so I picked it up.

In the game you play the British, trying to cross the Tulega River, trying to ultimately get units off the board to help relieve the siege of Ladysmith.

First up, time to clip counters. Nice thick chunky counters, but a complete pain in the ass to punch, so the corners had wings that needed clipping.

Initial setup. General Butler and the British HQ in the south. Communication is a huge part of this game, the Butler & HQ have to send orders to their commanders, and the closer they are to their troops the better chance those units will actually receive those orders.

The enemy is hidden among the hills and are hard to find until they start firing at you first. Also you have to cross the river, which is hard. The British in their infinite wisdom didn't scout ahead or take the time to figure out where the best place to cross was, so you have to do that in the heat of the battle.

Troops ready to roll. But they don't do anything without orders. So, you give them orders and place PLANNED OBJECTIVE markers, up to five spaces away, of where you want them to go. FIRST they have to receive the orders, easy to accomplish if Butler is close, then later on you have to ROLL to see if they FOLLOW your orders, the more cautious the commander the better chance they will follow your commands, the more brash, well, you know...

So I send orders to Barton and Dundonald--they get them, easy enough.

So here is where Major-General Dundonald was supposed to go:

He decides, screw that! Why go around to the right, when I can charge straight ahead, cross the river, and kill the bad guys right now. So, that's what he does.

And what does Barton do? He just ignores my orders. What is he doing instead? I have no idea. Drinking another cup of tea? Reading the newspaper? I won't know until the next turn when I have to send orders and tell him to get his ass moving.

But it's Major General Hildyard, who following my orders, confronts the enemy first, gnashing some teeth in the heart of the lion's den.

There is the standard basic scenario, and then you can mix and match a whole host of variants, some positive and some negative for you. So a lot of variability in this one.

Overall complexity is medium. It is easy, kind of like Revolution Road, beer and pretzels fun, but for me the rulebook took a little bit to get used to. All the info is there, it's just that some of it is hiding in plain sight, a little more care could have been taken to underline or highlight somehow some of the important rules that get lost in the middle of paragraphs--but that's a nit pick really. StukaJoe made a nice fan made 17 card play-through turn order. Where the sequence of play is all spelled out nicely on the cards, so you just flip, read, and act.

The game is great, especially for a solo game--the chaos of the random event chit cup, and the randomness of not knowing how strong each enemy unit is, you draw from a cup each time to see if the enemy is stronger or weaker then the printed value you can see, and of course, the Order System, giving orders and seeing what your commanders do or don't do is a lot of fun.

When I first saw the title, I thought this game was about perhaps Antarctica, or something cold. The only thing that freezes here are the dice - you are one and done, but there are some re-roll options, so that isn't entirely true.

A Roll & Write Contest entry. There are five different dice-rolling challenges. You complete each challenge three times then total your score.

My score was 215. I havent a clue if that is good or bad. In a multi-player version, you compete against other players' scores. Solo, I guess you can play to beat your high score.

I mowed my lawn this morning! That was outside! And my wife did a 5km ParkRun while I watched the kids. That counts, right?!

In other news I started my month out with Architects. I've posted about this game before as I adore the emergent stories. For example, today Therese setup a Betting House early on and then used a combination of a Thieves Den, sending Helena's followers jail and a Debt Collector to amass a huge fortune. She built a Treasury to convert these silvers to 10 gold bars and then set about paying off her huge debt and ending the game in good stead with the church.

And sending Helena back to the kiddies table at the same time, to the tune of 47-25.

I adore this game.

After my “failed” debut with Teotihuacan I decided to return to the books for a second read through of the rulebook. It turned out that I had forgotten to take into account even more finer details concerning the intricate aspects of the rules. At the same time I was filled with anticipation, there’s something about Teotihuacan that captivates me.

I chose red, the color of revenge.

I felt a bit more confident this time around as to the rule set. I decided to forego all variants of starting resources etc and played with the vanilla set up. Seeing that there are so many avenues of potential ways to score victory points I initially decided to try and focus my efforts on the pyramid. Through the action Decorate I started to, you guessed it, decorate the pyramid. This will net you victory points and if one is lucky even an opportunity to advance on the temple tracks. Initially I started to ascend the stairs of the blue and green temple steps.

One of many, many ways to score victory points in Teotihuacan.

But there are so many different avenues of interest in terms of main actions to utilize and they are all connected in some shape or form. And thus my initial plan to focus on one area was soon in tatters. Seeing one can potentially score a hefty sum of VP at the eclipse scoring thanks to advancing on the Avenue of the Dead I shifted my attention to constructing buildings.

The Avenue of the Dead.

I managed to keep a good pace against the Teotibot right up until the second eclipse. After that the bot decided to make a sprint towards the finish line. The bot had advanced further on both the pyramid and Avenue of the Dead tracks and thus scored a massive amount of VP going into the third era. Try as I might but I couldn’t catch up. The final tally was a loss with 90 versus Teotibots 115.

My final score. There’s definitely room for improvement.

There are so many thoughts running through my mind, Teotihuacan is one of those games that gets under my skin, in a good way. When a game leaves an lasting imprint after the box have been put back on the shelf, you know there’s something special about it. At the same time this game can most definitely be labeled “fiddly”, “cumbersome” etc due to the sheer amount of fine print in the rulebook. I can definitely sympathize with those who would rather play this multiplayer than solo, in an effort to unload the mental burden of keeping track of all... well tracks.

If you like a puzzling, heavy euro that really rattle your brain when it comes to interlocking mechanisms then I encourage you to take a look at Teotihuacan: City if Gods. But be prepared for some accounting in terms of keeping track of the fine print as to the rules.

First June play, and still on my Solo Con.

Green wanted rematch after being pushed to the ground of Red`s carts yesterday. It looked like it was going his way, but towards the end he started struggling, too.

Green managed two hole series, Red only one. But tables were turned, and Red hauled in the bonus VP tiles. And he was going for the bigger orders rather than saboutaging the smaller ones for Green.

Final count was Green 71, to Red 78

I didn`t bother with photos this time around...

This game is sweet! In more than one way. The first player is the one who last ate chocolate. It`s about packing chocolate, and the images are, well...CHOCOLATE!!

It`s my try at this game, as I got it in mail not too long ago. I like the simplicity of the game, the wooden components are nice, theme...yummmm

Mind you, the chocolate plate in the middle is not part of the game... .whistle:

This might be a sweet little filler game in down time, or late at night, when you want to think a little less. Though, towards the end of the game I needed to think a whol lot more, as I needed to optimize my actions.

Cards and tiles

A few games at the end of the Friday work day.

Tried kicking the challenge up a notch and won three games by rescuing seven species.

We'll see whether this pace of winning against The Corporations can continue.

Saturday ... will be out on the water. One of three paddling practice sessions before our team's first home race of the season. Eeep!

ETA: Friday is still May where I am... So ... blush

June 2: Won attempting to save seven species. So this is now a legit June entry. Yay me!

I think I need to buy more paint. Red paint, to be exact. There are just so many miniatures in the game, that should keep me busy for quite a while. And since I'm still very much below beginner level when it comes to miniature painting, I can mess up some minis and still have enough left that will hopefully look good enough

I'm not going to spoil anything here, but I like the idea of the case files you play through. Let's see how they actually play, can't comment on that so far.

The tutorial is a nice idea, it sets up an easy game and you can read up on what to do and move the minis accordingly. This is a neat idea, giving you an overview of the rules and letting you start playing straight away.
For me, it didn't really work. I didn't feel comfortable with just reading: move here, then you roll some dice, you get three successes, which means that xy happens.
After the first three scripted rounds, I'm now starting on the rules before I finish the mission, just to feel more comfortable.

But so far, I like what I'm seeing. Sure, tons of randomness in the game but I think this could be a fun game.

Played this solo the other day. I took on the role of King Agiad, of the Spartans vs. Athens. In a normal 4-player game it's a kind of team game, 2 vs. 2, Sparta vs. Athens. You "work" together as a team, in order to win your team has to have the most VPs, but within your winning side, you have to have more VPs than your partner in order to be the sole winner.

You debate issues in your senate, win these issues with card play, and then you get to use those issues to place on the board to accomplish a variety of military and many non-military tasks:

Athens bot gets a little frisky early on by invading my home area:

Military issues, Diplomatic, League, Treachery, and Oracles:

Locking horns with Athens all across the board.

There is a bit of the fog of war aspect to this game you lose when playing solo, but there is still a fair amount of it. And sometimes, yes, you know what the bot is going to do and how they're going to do it. But it's whether or not you can do anything about it. Can you beat your own bot teammate and win issues that will ultimately help your side on the board? Can you get your plan to work despite an uncooperative partner and the meddling of the bot enemy?

It's a really good solo game in my opinion. (But I don't think it will hit a lot of tables due to the fact it's a hard game to grok initially--though, the designer has a ton of scenarios in the playbook, half of them are very short, 30min to 60mins long, and of course some of them bigger scenarios that take a few hours to play--so you can bite off however much you want to chew.)

Yes! I`m back in business. I only went for one Monument, focusing on Adventurers and good buildings. But with all those cards mixed together, there are TOO many good cards. By the end I needed to start discarding Buildings to have funds for Adventurers.

The games runs quickly and smoothly when I am so familiar with the game. It ends too fast, and I am left with the feeling of `uuuuumm....` Maybe I should start savouring this little beauty a bit more.

My final score was 69, though I struggle a bit with scoring on King`s Herald. I am assuming it`s for each of the four fractions, and not for each individual building... Maybe someone has answered me on this before...?

Still a strong hit in my book, this game!

Please Remain Calm is an entry in the "Roll & Write Game Design Contest."

Something terrible has gone wrong at Dino World! You are attempting to evacuated park visitors before they become snack food for T-Rex. Cool, right! You roll 3 dice, add two to determine which trail you will take, and reserve the 3rd die to determine which zone Mr. Rex will venture into. The dice can be manipulated somewhat to get on a trail ahead of the hungry reptile.

I played two games. The rules are short and the games play fairly quick. I initially had trouble determining symbols and it was easy to miss rules embedded in the diagram examples. After the first game and a couple of rules goofs, I had the game down pat and it became more enjoyable.

Game 1 - I was choosing dice that sent dino beast to empty spaces on the trail not realizing they contained innocent victims. Oh well. I also had T-Rex go into dashed spaces that were off-limits until filled -- goof #2. I was wondering why the game seemed all too easy. I thought I only lost 1 person when after a rules check and a recount, it was actually 8 KIAs! I am sure to lose my job at the park I bet.

Game 2 -- I took off the gloves and got serious. Everything went nervously fine . . . for awhile. I was a bad dice-manipulator SOB staying one step ahead of brainless. If dino went to Zone 2, I was already there clearing a path making him think about becoming a grass-eater. No dice (pun intended). Lost victim 1, then 2, then 3, hung on for awhile, then 4 by game's end. Four ground personnel lost -- that's only acceptable on EASY Junior mode, I think. That performance will not enhance my VITA at the next Park Ranger job interview, I am afraid.
