Do you know about the Hungarian Board Game Award? You don't? No surprise, most Hungarian people don't know about it either although the first winner was announced this December. Still, it's a sign that even if we are catching up a bit late, there is something happening on the field of board games and board gaming in Hungary today.

The first award-winner and nominated games didn't get much publicity - there is still no official logo for the award and so on, so there are really many problems of starting - but well, at least something has started. In order to be eligible, a game had to be published in Hungarian after 1st January 2008 or have Hungarian rules attached (while being language-independent).
As there are really few heavy gamers and geeks here, the awards were not given to complex games but games that are really simple and easy gateways. First the aim is to show non-gamers and people who think board games equal roll and move games that even if they are light, modern board games can be fun and interesting for adults as well.

So let’s see the games:

Winner

Should I elaborate on why this one won? 3 of the 5 jury members were teaching games to people at festivals and tested most games that had a chance to be nominated at least. Dixit was the absolute favorite of the crowd and the 2 other jury members (including me) agreed it’s an outstanding game that can really make non-gamer people sit down and play together.

A relatively old game but one that stands the test of time; It's a classic so I don’t think any reasoning is needed.

The game that can be played even with smaller kids; it’s innovative, fun, a game where luck and tactics have an equal role, it was rather enjoyed by the crowd as well.

It’s the follow-up of the Spiel des Jahres-winning Zooloretto – and it’s simply a better game while it’s not really more complex than Zooloretto.
