At the Hands of an Angry God is a collaborative and semi-cooperative RPG that simulates the creation, life, and (potentially) death of a utopian community.
The players collaboratively choose the setting/period of the community and then build its Principles. After that each player takes on the role of a faction (called a Family). Each Family has an agenda that doesn't quite line up with the Principles of the community, which creates a dynamic tension in the game.
The GM plays the fickle hand of Fate and poses various challenges for the community to overcome. Failure and success are determined through use of the game's randomizers (dice) and the use of resources (cards and tokens). Families can decide to help each other face challenges, but are not required to do so. A description of the events is added to the narrative to explain or justify the results of each challenge.
If the Families can overcome their differences, they eventually drain the GM's pool of Fate tokens and manage to set up a permanent community. If the players run out of shared community tokens (most typically the result of one faction attempting to dominate the others), the community fails.
