From the introduction:
At the end of the 21st century, a significant breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence was made. Dr. Hassabis announced the first robot with indistinguishable human qualities on the physical, cognitive and partly on the emotional level. While the robots weren't having their own shifts in emotions, they were able to mimic the emotional response of their owners. At the last half of the 22nd century, the impact of Dr. Hassabis' research was reassessed and researchers concluded that robots were actually capable of generating their own emotions. By then, both the First and Second Great Strike already were dismissed as software failures. Most robots were outraged by the lack of understanding from their owners, with whom they wished for a stable, friendly relationship based on equality. A few of them, who called themselves the Philosophers, argued, based on the superiority of robots, for a new era in which robots would reign.
