Askalon is a German historical RPG set in an alternate version of medieval Europe, northern Africa and Asia.
The main task resolution mechanic is to roll a d20, add an attribute or skill value, and compare it to the target number of 20. If the result is equal to or higher than the target number, the roll was successful.
A character's attributes are determined randomly. He then selects an occupation that gives him some starting skills, and he may add some skills of his own choosing. A character may also learn combat techniques like Mighty Blow, Feint, Disarm, etc.
In combat, the attackers rolls for his attack, and the defender is allowed a defensive roll to avert the attack. Attacks can be made high, low or at the middle section of the opponent. Each attack zone has a hit location table that determines where the enemy was struck, based on the result of the attack roll. The damage that is dealt is calculated by the weapon's base damage, the strength of the character and the sensitivity of the hit location.
Askalon has no magic rules.
