From website:
I have had the pleasure of working with dozens of bestselling authors, and I have created over 700 book covers. I have worked with companies such as Harper Collins, Bloomsbury, Baen Books, LMBPN Publishing, Audible, Grey NY, and bestselling authors such as Michael Anderle, Steven Erikson, Lindsay Buroker, Ken Lozito, Dennis E. Taylor, Glynn Stewart, Lindsay Buroker, Nick Webb, B.V. Larson, J.S. Morin, Martha Carr, Ell Leigh Clarke, and Craig Martelle to name a few!
I love creating awe-inspiring art that you can stare at for hours.
When I create artwork, I feel like I am doing what I was born to do.
The focus of my artwork has always been to inspire awe. I love working in genres that don’t exist, specficially science fiction and fantasy, because in these genres I can create anything imaginable.
I used to read a lot of fantasy books, I would go to the back corner of the library where the huge sci-fi and fantasy books were and I would stare at the covers, I would take them back and tear through the books. Every time I would pick up the book I would love to stare at the artwork and enjoy all the storytelling and details. I especially loved the covers with landscape elements.
I feel like this side of book covers has been lost to a large extent in science fiction and fantasy since Amazon came around. Amazon made book cover thumbnails all-important, and big physical books covers aren’t as common. It has become all about making a flashy cover, but the depth, detail, love of art, and sheer beauty of covers can be lost.
I work to make a cover that has an extremely eye-catching thumbnail, but also has the care and depth that used to be a hallmark of SF&F.
Illustration is artwork with a purpose. That purpose is catching a potential reader’s eye, delighting them with the cover, and bringing them in to purchase the book. A good book cover needs to grab the target audience and say “read me!” This means something different to each audience, and I think through every decision to get to that point.
Who am I?
I am a Canadian boy from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I moved to Mexico City in 2012. A year later I met Sarai, the most beautiful and wonderful woman in the world, and we married in 2015. We now have a wonderful little son, Jacob!
We now live in Cuernavaca, a city an hour south of Mexico City, nicknamed the city of eternal springtime. I don’t miss Canadian winters one bit!
I spend my days with my small family, working on book covers from my home office, and playing the occasional video game. I love listening to audiobooks while I work. Some of my favorite authors are Jim Butcher, Patrick Rothfuss, Joe Abercrombie, and Brandon Sanderson.
My son Jacob has severe Cerebral Palsy, which is a huge challenge for us in a lot of ways. He is an amazing kid, full of energy and love. He is insanely smart, but lacking muscle control which means he can’t walk or talk yet.
