A long time ago in a town called Glasgow, in a country called Scotland, a small boy was born into a loving family in the month of November 1960. In the coming years the young boy would not necessarily follow the typical pastimes his fellow childhood friends did. Football and sport did not even come within his radar like so many, no, he had found magic in art. His father had been a wonderful artist and his portfolio of work was to remain an inspiration for the young boy for the rest of his life.
At the age of seven his world imploded when his father died. Much as his Mother and sisters would attempt to fill the gap left in his life, he was never to be the same again.
Darkness and violence had arrived at his very place of birth and his journey throughout his late youth was filled with broken promises and forgotten friends. Schooling was a challenge at best where he struggled on a daily basis. His one saving grace was the magic that was Art. He would lose himself in this adventure inspired by TV, movies, film, comics and books. He was at home with the magic, a world where he was not judged and could draw and paint his life on his own terms.
As the years rolled past he would stretch his wings in the hope of learning more magic. The apprentice would seek work in many areas from architects to advertising, art studios to printers. He was fortunate in the early early 80s to obtain a wide selection of promotional graphics for many musicians that were making Glasgow the place to be if you were involved in music. This would lead in time to the apprentice seeking greater enlightenment at college where over 4 years he learned the history and practice of the magic. With his qualifications he was sent forth and told to spread the magic. Graphics, design, illustration and photography would over time make the magic a life changing experience.
That special magic would weave its spell once more in the mid 80s. Love had arrived and soon a wife and children took their special place in his life. Over the next 10 year he would find his place as a Studio manager with a well established printer. For many years he would seek to spread and teach the magic to others. Soon new magic had arrived and digital lay waste to much traditional magic and many apprentices died along the way. Life had always been a challenge and he was not about to be left behind, so with many sleepless nights and the support of his family the apprentice left steady employment and set up business on his own. There was little that he would not do, advertising, magazine design, corporate work, exhibitions..the world was his oyster. Along the way he had already gained many professional qualifications in photography which was by now becoming integral to his magic.
From his first day in business he was resolved to the fact that change would happen and change it did. Although he was still providing magic for many local customers he was spreading his Net wide and with various Stock Agencies now representing his illustrations and photography customers were to come from far and wide. The world was shrinking but his art was spreading, the digital world was affecting every part of the creative industry. Unfortunately he was now of a certain age, older, wiser to the way of the world and was well aware of the darkness that could befall him at any moment. There were companies out there set on destroying all the good that had been achieved by many like him, money and greed was the new king and with it much magic was tarnished along the way. But as in the past, his path was pre ordained and nothing would stop him. Throughout the years the magic remained his companion. A guiding light, a hope of better times.
So where do we find that boy of the 60's now. In light of everything he remains optimistic that the magic will continue and evolve. There are still many roads to go down and new magic to learn, people to collaborate with, people to gift his magic to, people to sell his magic and yes admire the magic that is the creative life spark.
