Characters in the game have three Statistics (Attributes), including Gear, Work, and Heart. Players distribute 7 points among these three statistics at creation. Characters have two derived scores that vary during play: Luck and Fear. Action resolution pits a character's dice pool (the number of dice depending on the relevant Statistic value) against an opponent's dice pool.
Game play proceeds through four "chapters": Countryside, Castle, Courting, and (optionally) Escape. Play thus tends to proceed similarly between games though of course the character actions will vary with each iteration.
