The game proceeds in a structures series of "scenes", with 3 - 6 scenes comprising an entire game. In each scene, the Spy narrates the scene and setting. Other players provide input in the form of an invention (e.g., a super-spy technological device) and a complication. After the narrative other players may provide (minor) narrative responses. After each scene, the role of the Spy moves to the next player. There is no requirement that the various scenes be related, though of course they could be.
