From the introduction:
So, it’s the 1950s in America. Everything is so perfect. Perfect lines of houses all looking the same full of perfect white families, with their perfect neighborhoods kept free of people of color, thanks to redlining and segregation, unless they are a perfect servant, landscaper, or nanny, for the perfect kids who are all straight and dress according to their gender assigned at birth. And all the perfect cops put all the criminals in perfect prisons that no one ever sees, and kick the people too poor to afford perfect houses out of town, and the streets and the cars and the teeth all sparkle. McCarthyism is alive and well and neighbors rat each other out as communists.
