From publisher blurb:
Meet Fortune’s Fool…
“Everybody on the floor! NOW!”
Eirik Steed turned at the shouted command. Three masked men — two brandishing revolvers, and another holding a submachine gun — had burst into the G-bank. A guard gambled he could draw a bead on the attackers – and was ripped to pieces by a burst from the SMG.
“I told you to get on the floor, punk!” one of the criminals shouted at Eirik, leveling his weapon. Eirik surprised everyone by returning a loud and defiant “No!”
The robber pulled the trigger. Twice. Nothing happened. He turned the weapon sideways to look incredulously at it, and it immediately went off, the bullet ending his SMG-wielding partner with a perfect shot to the temple. As the remaining two thieves took stock of their situation with widening eyes, Eirik went for the nearest one. The other whirled, squeezing off a round. The shot flew wide, striking a heavy metal plant holder and ricocheting into the criminal who had tried to shoot Eirik. Seconds later, the remaining robber lay unconscious at Eirik’s feet.
As the bank customers swarmed Eirik with accolades and claps on the back, one remarked how lucky it was that the robber’s gun jammed.
“Lucky? I dunno about that,” Eirik replied, grinning.
Some people are just born lucky. And then there are those who seem to abuse the privilege. Eirik Steed is one of the latter. Born to poor parents on a struggling industrial world, his lack of education put him on an early path to crime, but his luck soon manifested itself when he tried to rob an influential noble. Instead of summoning the authorities, the noble decided instead to try and save this disheveled urchin from a life of despair. The fortunate act put the youngster on a different path, one that saw him embark on a long career in the military, aided by one of the most incredible streaks of luck in human history.
