These were issued both as a promotion for use in Role-Playing Game Association, (RPGA), sanctioned D&D 3.5 games and as convention promos. These templates were distributed to RPGA members most often through the monthly retailer's promo packs.
Printed on a thick transparent plastic sheet the templates could be cut out and used to determine the area-of-effect of the commonly used cone and burst type spells. The spell effects, which were artistically printed on the templates, beautifully and clearly indicated what type a spell was being used.
Though a specific spell was printed on the templates, a template shape could be used for any spell or effect with the same area-of-effect shape.
