Edited by David Nalle (also a contributor to other 'zines), "The Abyss" (occasionally "Abyss") was a digest sized fanzine which ran from the late 1970s into the late 1980s. There were at least fifty issues of The Abyss. Nalle produced the magazine in Washington, D.C. and it supported Ragnorak Enterprise's line of published games, mostly the Ysgarth RPG, as well as a variety of other popular systems.
According to the Tome of Treasures website, The Abyss boasted a circulation of 175 in 1980.
There is no relationship between this Fanzine and the later Abyss RPG.
Dave Nalle said this of Abyss: "We published Abyss for almost 15 years and over 50 issues and lost money on every issue. We even started taking advertising towards the end, but that didn't add enough revenue to justify the expense of the magazine. It was a strange magazine devoted mostly to game reviews and game design theory articles and it had its fans, but much though we loved publishing it, common sense won out."
