Hi, I'm Derek "open_sketchbook" Chappell!
I write roleplaying games.
I've been playing RPGs since I was 13 years old, and writing them for just about as long. I'm fascinated by the mechanics and concepts of RPGs of all kinds, and I've struck upon a kind of mental formula that keeps me writing and refining.
What kind of RPGs do you write?
I like my games to be highly tailored to the kind of story the game is trying to present; I love learning interesting new systems with strong core mechanics. As a result of that line of thinking, I've been writing a lot of RPGs, each one with unique mechanics, trying with each one to make a strong take on a genre or high concept.
Okay, but what about real games?
Obviously, just microRPGs aren't the goal here. I've been writing larger games for a while now with increasing confidence, and I'm nearly the point where I can release my first very large game. I hope to use the freedom this Patreon potentially represents to double down on my bigger RPG projects, like my extensive Magical Girl RPG 5 Across the Heart.
