[Note: not to be confused with the similarly named, UK-based Games Workshop.]
Game Designers' Workshop (GDW) was a game publisher active 1973 through 1996. Originally established to publish the Europa Series of World War II board war-games, it expanded to other wargames, science-fiction games, and ultimately role-playing games.
The company was organized June 22, 1973 by partners Frank Chadwick, Rich Banner, Marc Miller, and Loren Wiseman. Operations continued through February 29, 1996, when it "closed its doors" and its designers moved on to other projects. The designers attributed the company's demise as much to burn-out as to financial difficulties. Many of their games are now published by other publishers.
The first titles from GDW were the Europa Series Drang Nach Osten and its sequel Unentschieden. Originally their main effort went into The Europa Series of monster wargames, of which Drang Nach Osten! was merely the first, but they brought out a considerable number over the years.
By rough count, GDW published one new product every 22 days for 22 years.
Publication of Role-playing Games systems was continued by Far Future Enterprises (Traveller, 2300 AD, Twilight: 2000 and Dark Conspiracy).
