Description Edit | History

User Summary:

The first of this series of five boxed sets was published in 1983: the celebrated Basic Rules, popular known as the red box. This provided introductory rules for D&D aimed at new players, including all the necessary details to create new characters and run games for them up to 3rd level, and sample adventures (both solo and GM-led).

Further boxed sets were released, each building on the information in previous boxes, giving rules for higher levels of characters, optional and advanced rules, details about the Mystara campaign setting, additional monsters and items, and plot ideas and adventures. The series as a whole was phenomenally successful, and many gamers were introduced to the hobby through these boxed sets.

The levels covered by each set of rules is as follows:

Basic Rules (Red Box) levels 1 to 3
Expert Rules (Blue Box) levels 4 to 14
Companion Rules (Teal/Aqua/Cyan/Green Box) levels 15 to 25
Master Rules (Black Box) levels 26 to 36
Immortal Rules (Gold Box) Immortal levels

Later on the first four of these boxed sets were compiled and edited together to form the Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia. The Immortal rules were subsequently revised in Wrath of the Immortals.
